Updating or flashing a phone is not the easiest task for an unprepared user. We will consider this issue from all sides, give advice and all the necessary information on how to use Samsung Kies on Android.

Why you need to flash your phone

Phone firmware implies the installation in the device of a full range of basic programs that are necessary for its operation. This set of programs provides interaction between the user and the device, offering him access to all its functions. Simply put, firmware is an installation operating system. Therefore, if you hear the expression “Reflash the device”, this is no different from the expression “Reinstall the operating system”.

Specific firmware versions are usually tied to specific models phones, however, there are exceptions. And also we can conditionally attribute any version of the firmware to two varieties:

  • Official firmware is the firmware provided by the device manufacturer. Its updating and development lies entirely on the shoulders of the official developers. New firmware versions often change the interface of the device, give access to new functions, or simply eliminate various errors and shortcomings of previous versions.
  • Unofficial firmware is firmware made by independent device developers and users. It is also called "custom". Sometimes, such firmware can give your device functions that are not provided by the developers. But it is always worth installing it at your own peril and risk, since in the case of unofficial firmware, no one can give you guarantees that everything will work well. In addition, you almost always have to update such firmware yourself.

Accordingly, the following main reasons for flashing a phone can be distinguished:

  1. Improve device stability and performance.
  2. The desire to access applications that only function on new firmware.
  3. Troubleshooting and critical errors, which could be allowed by developers on older versions.
  4. The need to get rid of some of the features built into the phone's operating system, such as Google services.

In addition, sometimes phones do not support official update before new version firmware, even if their hardware allows it. It is in such cases that unofficial versions that are based on official ones can come in handy. They help to recreate all the features of current android firmware even on older machines.

Installing unofficial firmware is completely legal, because android is an open source system.

Possible risks

If you want to flash your phone, you should also be aware of all the problems that you may encounter. Let's get to know them:

How to avoid problems with firmware:

  1. Carefully read the installation instructions for the firmware version you want to install. Make sure it's compatible with your device.
  2. Fully charge your phone. If you run out of battery while flashing, it's almost guaranteed to cause serious problems.
  3. When installing the firmware via usb cable, do not touch or bend it. It is advisable not to touch the phone to prevent disconnection during installation. And also make sure that the file transfer port on your phone works well.
  4. If you are not sure of your actions, it is better to entrust the firmware to someone who has experience in such matters.

How to use Samsung Kies to update Android

In order to update the firmware of your device using the Samsung Kies program, you must follow these steps in sequence:

    After that, your device will automatically switch to update mode. The android symbol in the form of a green robot will appear on the screen.
    In no case do not turn off your device at this moment, this can lead to its breakdown.

  9. When the update download is complete, your phone will restart and the program will notify you that the update was successfully installed. You can close it by pressing the "Confirm" button.

After installing the update, you can check the performance of your device, as well as restore the data that you saved in advance. The entire update installation process can take up to half an hour.

Unofficial Android Firmware

Above, we figured out how to update or install the firmware officially supported by your phone. But how to install the firmware that you want, and not from those that the program offers? To do this, you need to understand exactly how the program finds out if there is a firmware update for a device connected to a personal computer.

Each phone has a so-called product code (ProductCode), which in encrypted form stores data about the current phone model, as well as the country and operator cellular communication. Based on this code, as well as current version firmware, the Samsung kies program and offers (or does not offer) certain firmware versions for your device.

At the same time, entries about the code are stored in the registry of your computer and then taken from there in order to check for new firmware versions of your device. Therefore, all we need is to replace the entries in the registry with the ones we need to install custom firmware.

  1. To get started you will need old version programs, up to version 1.5.3.10103.100. If you have a newer version installed, you should remove it, clear the registry entries and then download the old version, for example, here.
  2. In order for the program not to update itself, you need to change the entries in the registry about its current version. Find out the number latest version program and replace with it the value that is located along the registry path "LocalVer" = "1.5.3.10103.100"
  3. We launch the program and connect the phone to a personal computer.
  4. We start the registry and look for the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB there.
  5. We open the directories (1, 2, 3, etc.) and look for information about the firmware version in them. It is written as follows: GT-I9000HKDH3G, where the last three characters indicate the country and operator code. Examples of what you need to find: I9000OXAJF3 / I9000XXJF3, etc.
  6. Change the keys in this directory to whatever you need. They can be listed where you download the firmware, or you can pick them up yourself using the country table.
  7. Then you can run the program and update. The ProductCode of your device will be changed and the desired firmware will be installed.

Additional features of the Kies program

If you have any problems or you need to urgently disconnect your phone from personal computer, you can use the "Emergency Firmware Recovery" function, which is available in the same program.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Close kies samsung and then restart it.
  2. Take the battery out of your device and put it back in.
  3. If the message "Emergency firmware recovery" appears, then you can proceed to step 5.
  4. If such a message does not appear, click on the "Tools" button and select the "Firmware Emergency Recovery" item.
  5. Select from the list the device for which you need to perform an emergency firmware recovery.
  6. From the proposed list, select your device for which you need to perform a disaster recovery.
  7. After that, the program plugin will be updated and the update will be downloaded directly to your device.
  8. Pay close attention to the messages that will appear on the screen of the program. Follow all instructions.
  9. When the update is completed, a message will appear on the screen indicating the current firmware version.

If you need to restore your phone's warranty after installing an unofficial firmware, you can always install the official one through Samsung Kies and the warranty will be restored.

Data synchronization

You may want to save data from your phone before flashing your phone. With Samsung Kies, you can easily do this by transferring your music, contacts and all the necessary files to your new device. For this you need:

  1. Select the type of files you want to transfer.
  2. Click the "add file" button according to the selected file type. For example, for music, this would be the "add music file" button.
  3. When the firmware update is completed, it will be enough to click "Transfer to device" and all the files you have selected will be returned to your phone.

What to do if the program does not see the connected phone

It happens that you have installed a program and connected your phone to a personal computer, but it is not recognized by it. In this case, follow these simple steps:

  • Check USB ports and phone jack. They must be stable.
  • Check your personal computer and phone for viruses.
  • Update hardware drivers.
  • Restart the program.
  • Unplug and plug back the cable from your phone.
  • Make sure that you are not using a “gray” phone, but an officially purchased one in your country.

If the problem has not been resolved and the program still does not detect the phone, despite the fact that it is recognized by the computer, then the problem is in the program itself. In this case, you need to completely reinstall it.

  1. Uninstall the program from your personal computer using any service for installing and removing programs.
  2. Clean the registry for the most complete removal. You can use programs like CCleaner.
  3. Restart your computer and install the program again, making sure you are using current version downloaded from the official Samsung website.
  4. "Run as administrator" setup file can also help solve the problem.

Firmware "gray" phone through Kies Samsung

Kies Samsung cannot recognize unofficial Hardware, which is imported into the country without prior registration. In this case, the firmware will not be possible. Luckily, there is a simple solution to this problem:

  1. On your device, dial *#06#. This way you will know your International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI).
  2. Then, drive this identifier into the request * # 272 * IMEI # in place of the corresponding characters.
  3. You will see a menu where you can change the country of your device to any other. For Russia, enter SER.
  4. Reboot your device.
  5. Now your phone will be recognized as official, which means it can be easily updated through the Samsung Kies program.

Additional software features

The current versions of the Kies Samsing program also have a number of additional features for the convenience of users. For example:

  • Support MAC computers.
  • Allow you to connect your device via Wi-Fi.
  • Automatically notify you of new firmware versions for your devices.

We studied the main features of the Samsung Kies program and learned how to update the phone's firmware using it. We also figured out how to restore the device if there are problems during the firmware.

    other methods

    Is it possible to update Android in other ways? Yes. There are two more methods that you can use without a computer.

    1. Update via settings. You will need to go to the "About device" section and first check for updates. We recommend that you perform this procedure only when connected to wireless network. As soon as the system detects the presence of a new version, it will immediately prompt you to install it. By the way, in the same section you can set " automatic update”, which will allow you in the future not to think about whether the files are available for download or not.
    2. Update via Playmarket. The service for devices running the Android OS will allow not only downloading applications and games, but also updating the system.

    So, now you know how to update Android through a computer and more! Feel free to download new versions for your gadgets and enjoy their innovations.

    Flash gadgets - especially expensive smartphones and Samsung tablets starting from the Galaxy line - you can use Kies in different ways, but it's much easier to use Kies - a service that will help you flash and update your Android device. This will be discussed.

    Why and how phones, smartphones and tablets are flashed

    Before you rush to the coveted firmware, check out the pros and cons of firmware and device updates.

    What you need to know

    Reasons for flashing devices:

  • a huge number of pre-installed and standard applications, which select the performance resource, free disk space and battery energy;
  • desire to use engineering menu and other hidden features of the device, disabled by the manufacturer;
  • the desire to sort through different official and "custom" firmware of the same platform;
  • the desire to "hide" from tracking by services for collecting information about the user;
  • participation in development and testing third party programs for mobile devices.
  • Disadvantages of self-firmware:

  • loss of warranty;
  • device failure ("bricking"), entailing software repair gadget in the service center exclusively at your own expense during the warranty period;
  • errors when starting some applications;
  • a non-functioning hardware unit or component in a device - for example, inadequate GPS operation, Bluetooth, etc.;
  • fast battery drain (processes responsible for both Android-level discharge control and others that consume more resources than expected).
  • Rules that come in handy when flashing Android devices

  • It is best to flash the device from a laptop that has a healthy and fully charged battery.
  • The smartphone or tablet being flashed or updated must be fully charged, the battery must not be worn out.
  • Firmware is most often carried out via cable - take care of its reliability.
  • The USB ports on the PC must be in good working order.
  • The computer must have adequate speed and performance, and dozens of applications should not be running on it. If upgrading is required - change the processor and modules random access memory.
  • It is not allowed to flash a PC on which viruses and adware are operating - at any moment they can shake performance, and the firmware process can stall or “fly off” in the most interesting place, in addition, viruses can “infect” the device.
  • It is advisable to flash the device from a PC on which Windows has just been reinstalled and no software has been installed, except for the chipset drivers and the flasher. The point is that while Windows registry not cluttered application programs, the operating system works like a perfectly cleaned and lubricated mechanism.
  • Drivers for Samsung devices are needed - they are available on the company's website. Without them, firmware from a PC will fail.
  • How to flash and update Samsung gadgets through the Kies service

    Before starting the firmware via Kies, check the following.

  • Antivirus and Firewall software are disabled, or better yet, removed or not yet installed.
  • The Kies version is the latest.
  • The smartphone or tablet is connected directly to the USB port - and not through USB-Hub devices.
  • You have a high-speed and stable Internet channel - that is, there are no permanent disconnects.
  • It is essential to remember the following:

  • when flashing both through Kies and through Odin programs your warranty will survive - the Odin application was originally created by the developers of Samsung;
  • in case of opening Root access on the gadget and the subsequent Unroot procedure (cancellation of Root privileges), feel free to contact the service center in case of problems;
  • if you first installed a “custom” version of Android through Odin - and then returned the licensed version using Kies, and even waited for the next Android update and updated the Kies firmware again, then the warranty will remain.
  • Android Firmware Update by Samsung Kies

    This is the action plan.

  • Connect the gadget to the computer, launch the Kies application. It will inform you that an update has been released - and offer to download it.
  • When you click on the "Update" button, a confirmation message will appear as part of the developers' public offer.
  • After confirming the developer's offer, Kies will download the firmware.
  • After the download is complete, the new code will be transferred to mobile device.
  • Attention! The first half minute of transferring firmware files to a smartphone or tablet is especially important! If at this stage the cable breaks or falls out of the port, Kies itself “flies off” or the PC turns off spontaneously - you are guaranteed to receive a “corpse” that can only be restored at a Samsung service center.
  • The firmware of the mobile device has been successfully completed. Standard and preinstalled applications and Android components officially shipped for Samsung smartphones and tablets will be in place. There will be only contacts and Android bookmarks.

    Disaster recovery - how to use the functionality

    If during the update android versions there was a failure, Kies has an emergency firmware recovery tool in store for this case.

  • Launch Kies and go to the Android software updates tab on your gadget. All actions are performed on a PC.
  • Select your device from the list. Kies will prompt you for a disaster recovery code. Attention! If you have not received the Android firmware emergency recovery code, it will not be possible.
  • Enter it and click on the "Restore" button. The Samsung device will restart into recovery mode.
  • What to do if the program did not detect your gadget

    The following are the reasons for not having a connected Samsung smartphone or tablet in the Samsung program Kies.

  • Damaged Samsung USB cable. Repair broken wire connections. Replace the cable if the insulation is broken. Counterfeit cables made with violations of manufacturing techniques often fail - a sign is the manufacturer's savings on both the conductor (copper) and insulation. If an additional USB extension cable is used (the gadget is far from the PC), check also its serviceability. The total length of the USB cables must not exceed 3 m.
  • Faulty USB port on the computer. Connect the device to a different port. The reason for the failure of the USB port, in turn, may be: contamination of the current-carrying contacts, violation of their "springiness" (they bent from constant, frequent use for several years); careless handling of oneself USB connector, frequent power short circuits (+/-5V) due to a violation of the outer sheath of the cable or the insulation of the wires themselves, which led to USB controller in a PC out of order; not connected to motherboard port when the laptop was last repaired or system block PC. USB software violations can be: corruption of system Windows files, PC and Samsung chipset drivers or their incorrect installation, system infection Windows viruses, installation of unverified programs, frequent installation of new programs. Check everything!
  • You are using a Samsung gadget that has just been “killed” by an interrupted firmware or an unsuccessful Android update. Contact Samsung service, Android Shop or similar service center.
  • An outdated version of Kies. Update the app.
  • Not installed USB drivers and Samsung devices. You installed the Kies app prematurely, forgetting about the main thing, without which managing your smartphone or Samsung tablet impossible. Delete Kies. First, figure out how the drivers work, then reinstall Kies.
  • The microUSB port on the device itself is not working. Clean it from dust and grains that have fallen into the connector. If it does not help, contact the service center. The worst alternative is to update the version of Android without a USB cable - installing a new version of Android via a memory card, downloading an update via Bluetooth, or local network Wi-Fi, download from internet directly, without PC and Kies software. But not all of these methods can work - for example, installing from an SD card requires the ClockWorkMod Recovery software console on the device. Will have to tinker.
  • If the drivers are installed, everything is fine and should work, and Kies is "wise" - try the alternative Odin application.
  • Debug mode is enabled on your smartphone or tablet. Give the command: "Settings - Applications - Development - USB Debugging”, turn off the debug function. This feature is intended for developers and testers android applications, may interfere with Kies tablet detection.
  • You ignored the confirmation request to connect the gadget to the computer via USB, usually displayed by Android on the display of the device. Confirm this request.
  • Other features of Kies

    The Kies application toolkit is the same as that of similar "combines" of the world's leading manufacturers (Nokia PC Suite, iTunes and similar) and includes the following functions:

  • wireless communication via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: file sharing and Internet access;
  • synchronization of contacts, calendars, notes and messages;
  • access to the Samsung media library, music and video synchronization;
  • app store Samsung Apps;
  • backup.
  • Pairing your device and computer via Wi-Fi

    Follow the steps below to establish a Wi-Fi network connection. Taken as an example Windows version 7.

  • Open the Network and Sharing Center.
  • Click on "Edit Extra options public access". Switch the "Network discovery" switch to the "Enable network discovery" position.
  • Return to the "Network and Sharing Center" and go to "Change adapter settings" - this is the network folder Windows connections. Select your Wi-Fi connection and open its properties.
  • Cancel Wi-Fi Internet Connection Sharing.
  • Run " Windows Firewall” (it is located in the “Control Panel”). Go to "Allow programs to run through Windows Firewall".
  • Allow the launch and activation of wireless mobile devices.
  • Check the "SSDP Discovery" and "Generic PnP Device Host" services - they should be running.
  • Stop the Internet Connection Sharing service.
  • Setting up access to the Samsung gadget at the Windows system level is completed. Go to the settings on the gadget itself, select the "Kies over Wi-Fi" component, select your PC and give the command to connect. The PC will ask for a mobile device from which to access it.
  • Congratulations! Wi-Fi connection established. His throughput- 11-150 Mbps - more than enough to share files and sync your personal data. Only “house” (wired) Internet can compete with such a speed. USB speed, of course, more, and it’s easier to use it - but “wireless” will free you from the USB cord, and the coverage area will be throughout the apartment.

    Kies needs high performance and fast PC performance - lag-free operation is guaranteed only with 4 GB of RAM and a processor with 4 cores at a frequency of 2 GHz. This computer is not cheap. The program takes up at least 500 MB of disk space. Screen resolution - at least 1024 * 768, otherwise the windows will "fall out" of the screen. Windows 7 is recommended - with Windows XP, the Kies application will also work, but there may be errors at the level of system DLLs, which will not appear in the XP version.

    Samsung Kies also works with iTunes libraries and syncs with the player Windows Media. There is support for file sharing and Internet access via Bluetooth, work with the AllShare service, DLNA support. If it weren't for resource gluttony, it will surely win the hearts of almost all people who prefer Samsung smartphones and tablets.

    Video: An overview of the functionality of the Samsung Kies app

    Samsung Kies, despite its apparent difficulties, is a fairly feature-rich application for Samsung gadgets. It will serve as a worthy replacement for the Odin application - it is actually a kind of Samsung Mobile PC Suite out of the box. Enjoy your work!

    Samsung releases Cell phones operating room based Android systems. Each new gadget is equipped with a modern version of the operating system. Owners of older devices are advised to update the software to the latest versions. If you still have an old version of the firmware, then let's look at how to update the Android OS on Samsung phone.

    The easiest method

    It belongs to the list of powers of an ordinary user and does not require deep knowledge, so anyone can do it on their own.

    Before making changes, we recommend that you make backup stored data on external drive. It is also important to check the battery charge level. The process is lengthy, so it is worth charging the phone to the 80-90% mark in order to avoid a sudden stop in the update.

    Before the procedure, it is recommended to enable Wi-Fi signal reception in order to avoid material losses from the mobile account. When the data is received from the server, go to the "Install" field, wait for a notification about the completion of the changes. After making adjustments.

    This algorithm described for use on a smartphone samsung galaxy s3. However, the essence remains relevant for all devices.

    Update via PC or laptop

    You need to install Kies. The utility must be licensed so as not to spoil the operating system.

    Return to factory settings

    It happens when a person is not satisfied with the expansion. Then perform a rollback.

    How to get rid of the pirated version

    Let's say you accidentally installed an unlicensed file and are wondering how to uninstall the update.

    Nothing in our world is perfect and therefore buying the most modern technology, after some time it will be replaced by more advanced models. In this sense, Samsung is no exception. To extend the technical relevance of previously released TV models, the company provides an opportunity to use the Evolution Kit hardware modules or offers to update the Samsung TV firmware via the Internet or USB port.

    The Evolution Kit is relevant only for the flagship models of the ES7500 series and above, and the E8000 series PDP TVs. However, this method involves additional costs, but in return takes your model to the next level. functionality and technical solutions without replacing the TV with a model from the new line.

    In addition, the developers have provided software updates for Samsung TVs which makes it possible to correct errors in previous versions firmware and add certain functionality to previously released models.

    It should be noted that the Evolution Kit module updates the hardware (for example, improves processor performance) and software components of the device, and the software update does not affect the physical components. Some Evolution Kit modules have already been discontinued, and the firmware update is still relevant today.

    As I said above, you can update the TV firmware via the Internet directly from Samsung servers, or using a USB flash drive after downloading the latest version of the software from the official website.

    I do not recommend using the "Standby Update" (auto-update) function, which allows you to set the time range for checking the availability of the latest software for your TV model on Samsung servers. The fact is that:

    1. Using this function, the firmware may not be installed correctly, which in turn will inevitably lead to malfunctions of the TV. In some cases, the problem is solved only by replacing the motherboard.
    2. According to the interval set in auto-update, the TV will communicate via the Internet with the company's servers. There is no guarantee that the TV connection will be established during the day and therefore the TV may turn on spontaneously at different times of the day.
    3. If the firmware file is too large during the update, the function will not be able to download and install new software and the TV may freeze.
    4. During firmware update via Wi-Fi or LAN cable there is a high probability of a connection break, which may adversely affect the operation of the TV.

    That is why, I recommend disabling this feature and updating the TV software via USB. To disable this option, you need to go to "Menu" - "Support" - "Software Update" - "Update in mode. Standby” (Auto Refresh) - “Off”. It must be said that the latest version of the firmware on the company's servers appears a little earlier and only then is it posted on the site.

    Firmware update on Samsung TVs via USB.

    The first step is to go to the official website of Samsung and find your TV model. To speed up the process, enter your TV model in the search box. For example, let's enter the TV model UE40H6240AK.

    After that, a page with a manual and software for this model will open. Click on the first item "Firmware" and you will be taken to a page with technical description models.

    Here we need to find and download update file (USB type). Before downloading new firmware make sure you really need it. Compare the current version number (already installed) on the TV with the one posted on the official website.

    To do this, on the TV, go to "Menu" - "Support" - "Software Update".

    You can also see the version if you go to "Support" - "Contact Samsung".

    If the version offered for download on the official website has a larger number, then it makes sense to download and install new software on the TV. Pay attention to the language present in the service pack on the site. It offers two update files with multilingual and Russian. By the way, they differ only in this and there is no more difference between them.

    Only after that, proceed to download the firmware to a clean and pre-formatted USB drive in FAT32 format.
