The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 comes in a black cardboard box with a minimalist design and rich content.

The smartphone comes with a connecting cable with a connector USB type-C, 5/9V 1.67/2A variable output AC adapter, SIM eject tool, Micro-USB to USB Type-C adapter, USB to USB Type-C adapter, and quality wired two-driver AKG stereo headphones with a set of interchangeable in-ear earpieces.

Appearance and usability

Samsung eventually brought both of its top smartphone lines - Galaxy S and Note - to a single design, now the Galaxy Note 8 is almost indistinguishable from the Galaxy S8+, especially on the front panel.

Minor differences are noticeable only in a larger radius of curvature of the corner parts of the case and slightly differently arranged elements on the back side.

Of course, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has a slot for the invariable attribute of any member of the Note series - an electronic pen, even given its own unique name S-Pen. The pen is inserted into the butt from below and securely snaps into place there. Now it cannot be stuck in the other end, breaking all the insides, as happened with one of the previous models of the series - Samsung learns from its mistakes.

The case itself still consists of two absolutely symmetrical glasses with strongly curved sidewalls and a metal frame of complex shape connecting them along the perimeter. The frame expands at the top and bottom ends and narrows at the sides, which makes the design of Samsung Galaxy mobile devices recognizable, even small Chinese artisans began to copy it - an example of Bluboo S8 is before our eyes.

The device with a 6.3-inch display is definitely not miniature. This is a rather large smartphone, but due to the narrowed body with a screen aspect ratio of 18.5: 9, it is held comfortably in the hand. Fingerprints can appear not only on the glass panels, but also on the side frame, since it is lacquered and glossy. However, the case does not slip in the fingers at all, this question well thought out.

On the back side is dual camera, adjacent to the flash, fingerprint scanner and heart rate sensor; the front panel contains sensors above the screen, a front camera, a conversational speaker and an LED event indicator.

At the bottom, under the screen, there is neither a fingerprint scanner nor hardware buttons, the control buttons are on-screen here. The button bar can be removed from the screen at any time and called back, and when you start certain applications, such as games, the system itself offers to switch to full screen mode without displaying control buttons.

The side keys are located on both faces, there are not two of them, but three: another one has been added to the volume and power buttons to call the proprietary Bixby intelligent assistant, which has not yet learned to work in Russian. The keys are quite large, they have a soft but distinct stroke; traditionally, there are no complaints about these elements in Samsung smartphones.

The slot for installing cards is located not on the side, but on the upper end. With the help of a complete tool, a slide for SIM cards and a microSD memory card is pulled out of it. The "dual-SIM" hybrid option allows you to install either two Nano-SIM cards, or one Nano-SIM and one microSD.

The cover of this connector has a rubberized gasket, since the device is protected from moisture and dust ingress according to the IP68 standard: the device can be immersed in fresh water to a depth of 1.5 m for 30 minutes.

In addition to the card slot on the top end, there is an auxiliary microphone for the noise reduction system.

At the bottom, respectively, all the elements are collected, usually distributed over two ends: a 3.5 mm headphone minijack jack, a speech microphone hole, a number of holes for sound output from the main speaker, and a USB Type-C connector (as usual, asymmetrically located relative to the central axis). Here is also the socket for the electronic pen mentioned above.

The device is available in black ("Black Diamond"), blue ("Blue Sapphire") and golden ("Yellow Topaz") color. The front panel under the glass always remains black.

Screen

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is equipped with a Super AMOLED display with curved sides protective glass. The screen dimensions are approximately 71×145 mm with a diagonal of 6.3 inches (excluding the rounding of the side parts). The resolution in this case is 2960 × 1440, the dot density is about 522 ppi, the aspect ratio is 18.5:9.

By the way, by default, the smartphone has a reduced resolution. Full screen HD + (2220 × 1080), and you need to manually change it yourself to the maximum WQHD + (2960 × 1440) in the settings.

The width of the frame around the screen is minimal: on the sides it does not exceed 2 mm, the indents at the top and bottom are only about 8 mm high.

The display brightness can be adjusted manually or used automatic settings based on the operation of the ambient light sensor. Multi-touch tests diagnose support for 10 simultaneous touches.

Detailed examination using measuring instruments held the editor of the sections "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are better than the screen of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Samsung Galaxy Note 8, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is slightly darker (brightness in photos is 109 versus 114 for the Nexus 7) and does not have a pronounced tint. The ghosting of reflected objects on the screen of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen. Due to the smaller number of borders (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, screens without an air gap look better in conditions of intense external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be replaced. On the outer surface of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 screen, there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, better than Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much more easily, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

When displaying a white field in full screen and with manual brightness control, its maximum value was 335 cd / m² under normal conditions, in very bright light it rises to 510 cd / m². You also need to take into account the fact that in this case the smaller the white area on the screen, the lighter it is, that is, the actual maximum brightness of the white areas will almost always be higher than the specified value. As a result, readability during the day in the sun should be at good level. The minimum value is 1.9 cd / m², that is, a reduced brightness level allows you to use the device without problems even in complete darkness. Automatic brightness control works according to the light sensor (it is located to the left of the front speaker slot). The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider, with which the user can try to set the desired brightness level in the current conditions. If you leave everything at default, then in complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 7 cd / m² (dark), in an artificially lit office (about 550 lux) sets it to 150 cd / m² (normal), in a very bright environment (corresponds to on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) increases to 510 cd / m² (to the maximum, it should be). The result did not quite suit us, so in complete darkness we slightly increased the brightness, resulting in the following values for the three conditions indicated above: 12, 150, 510 cd / m² (ideal combination). It turns out that the auto-brightness function works adequately and to some extent allows the user to customize their work to individual requirements. At any level of brightness there is a significant modulation with a frequency of 60 or 240 Hz. The figure below shows brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) for several brightness settings:

It can be seen that at the maximum ("100% +" - this is with additional illumination of the light sensor with bright light) and brightness close to it, the modulation amplitude is not very large, as a result, there is no visible flicker. However, when the brightness is lowered, modulation with a large relative amplitude appears, its presence can already be seen in the test for the presence of a stroboscopic effect or simply with rapid eye movement. Depending on individual sensitivity, such flickering can cause increased fatigue.

This screen uses a Super AMOLED matrix - an active matrix on organic light emitting diodes. A full color image is created using subpixels of three colors - red (R), green (G) and blue (B), but there are twice as many green subpixels, which can be referred to as RGBG. This is confirmed by a fragment of a microphoto:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

On the fragment above, you can count 4 green subpixels, 2 red (4 halves) and 2 blue (1 whole and 4 quarters), while repeating these fragments, you can lay out the entire screen without gaps and overlap. For such matrices, Samsung introduced the name PenTile RGBG. The manufacturer considers the screen resolution based on green subpixels, on the other two it will be half as much. The location and shape of the subpixels in this variant is close to the screen case of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and some other newer ones. Samsung devices(and not only) with AMOLED screens. This version of PenTile RGBG is better than the old one with red squares, blue rectangles and stripes of green subpixels. However, some uneven contrasting borders and other artifacts are still present. However, due to the very high resolution, they only minimally affect the image quality.

The screen has excellent viewing angles. True, the white color, when deviated even at small angles, alternately acquires a light blue-green and pinkish tint, but the black color remains just black at any angle. It is so black that the contrast setting is not applicable in this case. For comparison, here are photos in which the screens of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (profile Basic) and the second comparison participant, the same images were displayed, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m², and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K.

White field:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and hue of the white field (with the exception of a slight darkening and a change in hue towards the curled edges).

And a test picture (profile Basic):

The color reproduction is good, the colors are moderately saturated, the color balance of the screens is slightly different. Recall that the photo can not serve as a reliable source of information about color quality and is provided for illustrative purposes only. In particular, a pronounced reddish tint of white and gray fields, which is present in the photographs of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 screen, is visually absent when viewed perpendicularly, which is confirmed by hardware tests using a spectrophotometer. The reason is that the spectral sensitivity of the camera matrix does not exactly match this characteristic of human vision. Note that in this case, the picture occupies the height (with landscape orientation of the screen) of the entire area available for displaying the image and goes to the curved edges of the screen, which leads to darkening and color distortion. Also, in the light, these areas almost always glare, which makes it even more difficult to view images displayed in full screen. And even the picture of films with an aspect ratio of 16:9 comes to bends, which interferes with watching movies.

The photo above was obtained after choosing a profile Basic in the screen settings, there are four of them:

Profile adaptive display differs in some kind of automatic adjustment of color reproduction to the type of output image and environmental conditions:

The saturation is greatly increased, it looks terrible. What happens when you select the two remaining profiles is shown below.

AMOLED movie:

Saturation is slightly less.

Photo AMOLED:

The saturation of red is slightly lower than in the case AMOLED movie.

Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen (profile Basic).

White field:

The brightness at an angle on both screens has noticeably decreased (in order to avoid strong darkening, the shutter speed is increased compared to previous photos), but in the case of Samsung, the drop in brightness is much less pronounced. As a result, with formally the same brightness samsung screen Galaxy Note 8 visually looks much brighter (compared to LCD screens), as the screen mobile device often have to look at least at a slight angle.

And a test picture:

It can be seen that the colors have not changed much on both screens and the brightness of the Samsung smartphone at an angle is noticeably higher. Switching the state of the elements of the matrix is \u200b\u200balmost instantaneous, but there may be a step at the front of the switch-on width of about 17 ms (which corresponds to a screen refresh rate of 60 Hz). For example, the dependence of brightness on time looks like this when moving from black to white and vice versa:

In some conditions, the presence of such a step can lead to plumes trailing behind moving objects. However, dynamic scenes in films on OLED screens are different high definition and even some "jerky" movements.

The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with an equal interval according to the numerical value of the shade of gray showed that there is no significant blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.04, which is slightly less than the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma curve deviates slightly from the power dependence:

Recall that in the case of OLED screens, the brightness of image fragments dynamically changes in accordance with the nature of the displayed image - it decreases for images that are generally bright. As a result, the resulting dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) most likely does not correspond slightly to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential grayscale output almost on the entire screen.

Color gamut in profile case adaptive display extra wide - wider than DCI-P3:

In profile AMOLED movie the coverage is a little narrower, it is almost equal to DCI-P3:

When choosing a profile Photo AMOLED coverage is pressed to the borders of Adobe RGB:

When choosing a profile Basic coverage is compressed to sRGB borders:

Without correction, the spectra of the components are very well separated:

In the case of a profile Basic with the maximum correction, the color components are already noticeably mixed with each other:

Note that on screens with a wide color gamut (without appropriate correction), the colors of ordinary images optimized for sRGB devices look unnaturally saturated. Hence the recommendation: in most cases, watching movies, photos and everything natural is better when choosing a profile Basic, and only if the photo was taken on an Adobe RGB setting does it make sense to switch the profile to Photo AMOLED. Likewise, profile AMOLED movie Appropriate when viewing DCI-P3 video footage adopted in digital cinema.

The balance of shades on the gray scale is good. The color temperature is close to 6500 K, while this parameter does not change very much in a significant part of the gray scale, which improves the visual perception of the color balance. The deviation from the black body spectrum (ΔE) remains below 10 units for most of the gray scale, which is considered a good indicator for a consumer device:

(The darkest areas of the gray scale in most cases can be ignored, since there the color balance does not matter much, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

For some reason, only when choosing a profile adaptive display it becomes possible to adjust the color balance with three adjustments of the intensity of the primary colors, but due to the too wide color gamut just in this profile, it makes no sense to correct the balance.

There is a trendy feature blue light filter, for which the settings even provide a more or less correct description (in the level menu above, nonsense is written about “reducing eye strain”, but oh well):

Why such a correction can be useful is described in the article about iPad Pro 9.7. In any case, when having fun with a tablet or smartphone at night, it is better to reduce the screen brightness to a minimum, but still comfortable level, and only then, to calm your own paranoia, turn the screen yellow with this setting.

Let's summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. It is acceptable to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, as well as a color gamut close to sRGB (when choosing the right profile) and a good color balance. At the same time, let's recall the general advantages of OLED screens: true black color (if nothing is reflected on the screen), a noticeably smaller drop in image brightness when viewed from an angle than an LCD. The disadvantages include modulation of the screen brightness. Users who are particularly sensitive to flicker may experience fatigue as a result. However, overall the screen quality is very high. Separately, we note that from the point of view of image quality, curved edges are only harmful, since this design find introduces color tone distortion and reduces brightness at the edges of the picture, and in ambient light conditions leads to inevitable glare at least along one long side of the screen.

Camera

The front module received a sensor with a resolution of 8 megapixels and a fast lens with an aperture of f / 1.7 without its own flash, but with autofocus. The quality of the shooting is impressive: it turns out as clear as possible, bright picture with high detail and good sharpness across the entire field of the frame.

There is a "Stickers" mode in which you can add fun details to your portraits. But here the quality is, of course, much lower. It is clear that such a program can always be installed on any other smartphone, but here it is already built in by default. Naturally, there is a self-portrait correction function (you can change the skin tone, narrow the face, correct the shape of the eyes, etc.).

As the main camera, a set of two modules with the same resolution of 12 megapixel matrices, but different lenses is used: one with f/1.7 aperture, the second with f/2.4 aperture. The main lens with 2x optical zoom allows you to get a high-quality picture even in zoom mode. Both modules are equipped with optical image stabilization.

The Live Focus function allows you to take spectacular pictures with bokeh (blurring the background), and with the ability to choose the depth of field. With the Dual Capture function, the camera can take two pictures at the same time thanks to two lenses: the main lens focuses on the details of the subject being photographed, while the wide-angle lens captures a wider picture.

In mode manual settings you can change the shutter speed (from 1/24000 to 10 s), ISO (ISO 50 - 800), white balance, select the type of focus and exposure compensation). In this mode, you can save pictures in RAW format (in parallel with JPEG).

The camera can shoot video in the maximum resolution of 4K, as well as in Full HD (1920 × 1080) at 60 and 30 fps. Image stabilization works in all top modes, which is commendable. Compared to most modern mobile devices, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 camera does a good job of shooting video, although stabilization sometimes adds some “jelly-like” distortions. Nevertheless, the image is clear, smooth, with good sharpness and high detail, almost accurate color reproduction. The sound is also recorded clearly and cleanly, the noise reduction system with additional microphones copes with its tasks adequately.

The text is well done.
The camera does a great job with macro photography.
Good sharpness and detailing in the field of the frame and in terms of plans.
Indoor macro photography works well for the camera.
Nice work with shadows.
Sharping is practically non-existent.
Even in the shadows, the detail is good.

Pro good camera there's not much to say other than that she's good. It's nice to know that progress in the field of smartphone cameras still does not stand still, and both "chamber" giants delight us with new products this fall. Apparently, Samsung has stopped chasing the frame size and dubious "chips" that other manufacturers are trying to fasten to their cameras in order to create the illusion of progress. Now quality comes to the fore again, and the camera modules still do not work one hundred percent, so they are forced to work better and better.

JPEG RAW
Lighting ≈ 3200 lux
Lighting ≈ 1400 lux
Lighting ≈ 130 lux
Lighting ≈ 130 lux + flash
Lighting ≈ 1 lux + flash.

The wide-angle module has not changed much: it still does not abuse software processing, works out the details of the field of the frame and plans well, and practically does not cause any complaints. Although the maximum resolution in JPEG is not so high compared to competitors, RAW fully compensates for this. The manufacturer has not yet succeeded only in defeating low-light noise to such an extent as to exclude their influence on resolution measurements.

26 mm 52 mm

For the second year, the fashion for telephoto lenses in smartphones has continued. Someone simply inserts a camera with a telephoto lens and then, having recognized the attempt as unsuccessful, tries to come up with a specific application for the module, while someone brings it to mind, creating a full-fledged “telephoto camera”, practically not inferior in quality to a wide-angle one. It was on the second path that Samsung went, and now the smartphone has a telephoto lens that allows you to shoot distant objects in high quality with good detail. In fact, the smartphone has a full double optical zoom.

Traditionally, we can conclude that the camera will do an excellent job with any scenes.

Telephone part and communications

Communication Samsung features The Galaxy Note 8 is rich: it includes support for data transfer in most bands of LTE FDD and TD networks. Including, of course, all the most common frequency bands in our country (Band 3, 7 and 20 FDD LTE) are supported. There is also support for quad-band TDD LTE (Band 38-41). Supports LTE Cat.16 (up to 1 Gbps). In the urban area of the Moscow region, the device behaves confidently, the quality of signal reception does not raise any complaints, the device demonstrates high speeds in the usual test places, quickly restores communication after a break.

Supports dual Wi-Fi bands (2.4 and 5 GHz) VHT80 MU-MIMO, 1024-QAM, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, ANT+, can be arranged wireless hotspot access via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth channels. There is an NFC module, but, unfortunately, it does not work fully with Troika travel cards and the My Travel Card application.

The navigation module works with GPS (with A-GPS), with domestic Glonass and with Chinese Beidou. The first satellites are detected during a cold start within tens of seconds, the positioning accuracy in the Moscow region is satisfactory. There is a built-in magnetic field sensor for the operation of the compass.

The phone application supports Smart Dial, that is, while dialing telephone number immediately carried out and the search for the first letters in the contacts. Methods for sorting and displaying contacts are standard for Android, contacts can be sorted by last name or first name, the same is true with displaying the caller's contact. There is a dual-SIM smartphone variant, but our test unit only worked with one.

Software and multimedia

Android OS version 7.1.1 is used as a software platform with the ability to update over the air (OTA). The proprietary shell here is the same as that of the Samsung Galaxy S8 +, with the exception, of course, of programs for working with an electronic pen.

The electronic pen, the tip of which in the Galaxy Note 8 compared to the Galaxy Note 5 has noticeably lost weight (it has become only 0.7 mm thick against 1.6 mm), can recognize 4096 degrees of pressure. It lets you cut out complex shapes from images to share or paste into other images, create handwritten photo captions and animated GIFs. It was even created social network Penup is a dedicated place to share your creations created with the S Pen. Notes, as before, can be recorded without waking the screen when it is in Always On Display mode.

Another feature of modern devices Samsung Galaxy S and Note is the ability to use curved sides of their screens. Due to the almost complete absence of a side frame, these sides of the screen are available for interaction with fingers. As before, on the side of the screen, you can display a highlighted virtual strip, when pressed, a menu is opened that is responsible for quick contacts and instant access to the most used applications. Also here it is possible to select and save any part of the screen with further text recognition.

There are few additional programs, and those that are present are mainly represented by a familiar set of their own utilities (Samsung Gear, Connect, Health, etc.), as well as a family of Microsoft applications. Game Launcher can be noted, which improves system performance when launching selected games to improve the gaming experience and allows you to record gameplay on video.

To listen to music, only a regular player is provided Google Play Music, complete with a powerful set of manual settings and EQ presets, as well as Adapt sound technology for headphones. The smartphone comes with two-driver AKG headphones with good sound quality for its level. The sound of the main speaker is not so impressive. It produces a rather monotonous and flat sound, without noticeable depth and saturation, although there are no complaints about purity and volume reserve.

The voice recorder with several settings demonstrates excellent sensitivity, the smartphone is quite suitable for recording interviews and lectures.

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 hardware platform is built on the Samsung Exynos 8895 Octa SoC with 8 cores in two clusters: 4 Exynos M1 cores up to 2.3 GHz and 4 ARM Cortex-A53 cores up to 1.7 GHz. SoC is made on a 10-nanometer process technology. The Mali-G71 video accelerator with support for the Vulkan graphics API is responsible for graphics processing. Volume random access memory is 6 GB, and the built-in flash memory is 64 GB, of which about 2.7 GB of RAM and 51.7 GB of ROM are initially available. You can purchase more expensive options with 128 or 256 GB of flash memory.

It is worth noting that, traditionally for Samsung, Galaxy devices can be based on different SoCs: there is a modification of the Galaxy Note 8 based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform. The supply of one or another modification will depend on the region.

It is possible to expand the memory by installing microSD cards, you can transfer applications to a memory card.

According to the results of the tests, the Samsung Exynos 8895 SoC showed the expected maximum results, this is the most powerful at the moment mobile platform Samsung. The smartphone confidently copes with any tasks in real scenarios, and thanks to a powerful video accelerator - with any demanding games. Using the built-in Game Launcher application, you can not only record the gameplay on video, but also enable full-screen mode in any of the games. Despite the unusual aspect ratio of the screen, even if there are warnings, the game still ends up running without any problems.

Testing in comprehensive AnTuTu and GeekBench tests:

For convenience, we have summarized all the results obtained by us when testing a smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks in tables. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within a single comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions benchmarks, so many worthy and relevant models remain “behind the scenes” due to the fact that they once passed the “obstacle course” on previous versions of test programs.

Testing the graphics subsystem in 3DMark gaming tests, GFXBenchmark and Bonsai Benchmark:

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (due to which the speed can rise above 60 fps).

Below is a thermal image rear surface obtained after 10 minutes of running a battery test in the GFXBenchmark program:

Heating is strongly localized above the center and close to the left edge, which apparently corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 41 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees), this is the average heating in this test for modern smartphones.

To test "omnivorous" when playing video (including support for various codecs, containers and accessibility, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is most often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect everything from a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it. All results are summarized in a table.

Format container, video, sound MX Video Player Regular video player
1080p H.264 MKV, H.264 1920×1080, 24fps, AAC plays normally plays normally
1080p H.264 MKV, H.264 1920×1080, 24 fps, AC3 plays normally
1080p H.265 MKV, H.265 1920×1080, 24fps, AAC plays normally plays normally
1080p H.265 MKV, H.265 1920×1080, 24 fps, AC3 plays normally Video plays but no sound

Further testing of video playback performed Alexey Kudryavtsev.

This unit supports DisplayPort Alt Mode for USB Type-C which outputs picture and sound to an external device when connected to the USB port. We tested working in this mode together with a monitor with a USB Type-C input, as well as with (companies). Video output is in 1080p mode at 60 Hz frame rate. When the smartphone screen is in portrait orientation, the picture on the Full HD monitor is displayed inscribed in height and with wide black margins on the sides, and in landscape orientation, inscribed in width with narrow black margins at the top and bottom. Note that simultaneously with the image and sound output, you can connect a mouse and keyboard to your smartphone via USB, turning it into the basis for a workplace, but for this, the adapter or monitor must allow connection of external devices. The manufacturer also offers, allowing the use of conventional peripherals for the workplace.

To test the display of video files on an external screen (only 4K files) and on the screen of the device itself, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Methodology for testing video signal playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices) "). Screenshots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped determine the nature of the output frames of video files with different parameters: the resolution varied (1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels) and frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps). In tests, we used the MX Player video player in Hardware mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

4K/25p
File Uniformity Passes
Monitor output
4K/60p (H.265) Great No
4K/50p (H.265) Great No No
720/25p Great No
720/24p Great No

Note: If both columns Uniformity And Passes exhibited green rating, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven interleaving and dropping frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect viewing comfort. Red marks point to possible problems associated with the playback of the respective files.

According to the criteria for displaying frames, the quality of playing video files on the screen of the device itself is very good, since frames (or groups of frames) can be displayed with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 (1080p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the narrow border of the screen, going to the bends. The clarity of the picture is high, but not ideal, since there is no escape from interpolation to screen resolution. However, for the sake of experiment, you can switch to the one-to-one mode by pixels, there will be no interpolation, but PenTile features will appear: the vertical world through the pixel will be in the grid, and the horizontal one will be a little greenish. The latter is true only for test worlds; the described artifacts are absent on real frames. The brightness range displayed on the screen actually corresponds to the standard range of 16-235: in the shadows there are about six, and in the highlights only a couple of shades merge with black and white, respectively. Note that this smartphone has support for hardware decoding of H.265 files with a color depth of 10 bits per color, but the display is carried out in 8-bit mode.

Battery life

The non-removable battery installed in the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has a capacity of 3300 mAh. Not to say that the hero of the review demonstrates autonomy records, but in principle, given the huge high-resolution screen, everything is not so bad.

In real life, the device behaves in the same way as most modern smartphones: it confidently survives until evening charging, but you can’t count on more.

Testing has traditionally been conducted at normal power levels without power saving features.

Battery capacity Reading mode Video mode 3D game mode
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 3300 mAh 15:00 12:00 p.m. 4h 20m
Sony Xperia XZ1 2700 mAh 17:00 11:00 a.m. 8 a.m.
LG G6 3300 mAh 4:50 p.m. 12:00 p.m. 6 a.m.

Meizu Pro 6 Plus 3400 mAh 5:30 p.m. 12:30 pm 4h 20m

Continuous reading in the Moon + Reader program (with a standard, light theme) at a minimum comfortable brightness level (brightness was set to 100 cd / m²) with auto scrolling lasted until the battery was completely discharged for about 15 hours, and with continuous viewing of video in high quality (720p) with the same brightness level through home wifi network the device operates less than 12 hours. In 3D gaming mode, the smartphone can work up to 4.5 hours.

Fast charging is supported, the smartphone is charged from its own network adapter for 1 hour 20 minutes with a current of 1.25 A at a voltage of 9 V. The smartphone also supports wireless charging, but Charger will have to be purchased separately.

Outcome

Thanks to the availability of a highly functional electronic pen (and accompanying software), the Galaxy Note series devices still have practically no competitors among smartphones, so the manufacturer sets them even higher price than the very expensive Galaxy S flagships (in this case - S8 and S8+). The Galaxy Note 8 is truly a mobile device that not everyone can afford. And most importantly, it cannot be said that the buyer pays 70 thousand rubles for uncompromising opportunities: not all characteristics of the Korean tablet phone are the best of the best. At a minimum, this applies to autonomy, which is far from a record here. Well, the sound of the speaker (moreover, one, although many top competitors have a stereo pair) cannot be compared, for example, with the recently introduced Huawei Mate 10. But in terms of photo quality, the Galaxy Note 8 is one of the best mobile devices on the market. Many also really like the design - slick smooth contours of glass panels with strongly rounded sides relished a large part of the users. There are no claims to the quality of the display, to the widest communication possibilities, to the hardware power of the device.

In general, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, like its closest relatives Galaxy S8 and S8 +, is the case when it is useless to convince or advise, since part of the audience has a strong love for the Korean brand and always has its own special opinion on this matter. You can only add that the story of the fires of the previous model of the Note 7 series, followed by a recall from the sale, left no chance for reflections like “whether to switch from previous version for a new one?" For users who really need the functionality of an electronic pen, amid the disappearance of Galaxy sales Note 7 has been too long waiting and there are almost no alternatives. And this time, the company simply had to take care of the safety of loyal users with tripled force, so the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is probably one of the most secure smartphones On the market.

On Wednesday, August 23, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note 8 in the hope that the novelty will help to forget and return the good name to the line.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 borrows its extra-wide display from its "brother" and gets a number of improvements hardware for more performance. Starting August 24, the device is available for pre-order. If you order the Galaxy Note 8 before September 24, you can choose either the Samsung Gear 360 camera for free or the so-called Galaxy Foundation Kit, which includes a 128 GB memory card and an accessory that supports wireless charging.

Screen size and resolution Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Of all the Samsung smartphones, the Galaxy Note 8 phablet will be the largest. The phablet is equipped with a 6.3-inch edge-to-edge Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2960 × 1440 pixels. The same resolution Galaxy screens S8 and S8 +, however, due to the fact that the size of the display itself is smaller, the pixel density is higher - 570 and 529 ppi, respectively. The Galaxy Note 8 has a pixel density of 521 ppi.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 design and colors

Like the Galaxy S8, the Galaxy Note 8 has a wide screen. However, instead of increasing the width, Samsung slightly increased the device itself. As a result, the Note 8 is the same width as the ill-fated Note 7, only slightly thicker and longer. Therefore, you can still work with the phablet with one hand, despite the wider screen.

If you've gotten used to the Note 7 in the short time it's been on the market, keep in mind that the Note 8 will be somewhat heavier. If Note 7 weighed 169 g, then Note 8 - 195 g.

Initially, the novelty will be available only in two colors - "Black Midnight" (Midnight Black) and "Grey Orchid» (Orchid Gray). Samsung is also working on blue and gold color options, which should appear at a later date.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Dual Camera

What really sets the Galaxy Note 8 apart from not only other devices in the Galaxy lineup, but Samsung devices in general, is the dual rear camera setup. Both modules are equipped with 12-megapixel matrices. The wide-angle lens has an aperture of f/1.7, while the telephoto lens has an aperture of f/2.4. Like the iPhone 7 Plus, the telephoto lens has a 2x optical zoom. However, the optical image stabilization system is present in both main Galaxy cameras Note 8, and in the iPhone 7 Plus only one.

In addition to zooming in, the Note 8's dual camera lets you add some effects when shooting portraits (such as blurring the background to make the image more artistic). You can adjust the blur level both before and after pressing the shutter release. In addition, the dual camera allows you to take pictures with both wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

In addition to the two main ones, the Galaxy Note 8 received an 8-megapixel front camera with an f / 1.7 aperture. Recall that the ill-fated predecessor of the phablet was equipped with a 5-megapixel selfie camera.

Processor, RAM and internal memory Samsung Galaxy Note 8

During the presentation of the device, Samsung representatives revealed very few details about the processor. It is known that the Galaxy Note 8 will be sold in the US with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. The same processor is used in the Galaxy S8, as well as in other high-end Android smartphones such as OnePlus 5 and HTC U11.

The speed of the Galaxy Note 8 will increase due to the large amount of RAM. Unlike 4 GB in the Galaxy S8 and S8 +, the novelty received as much as 6 GB. Recall that last year's model was also equipped with 4 GB of RAM.

Similar to the Galaxy S8, the Note 8 comes with 64GB of internal storage, which can be expanded with microSD cards up to 256 GB.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 accessibility features

One of the highlights of the novelty is the S Pen stylus. Previously, it was possible to take notes with it, even without having to unlock the device first. The Note 8 now lets you save up to 100 of these notes, and Live Messages lets you turn handwritten scribbles into animated GIFs.

Notably, the S Pen can be used as a translator. Swipe the stylus over the text and get the translation. The novelty supports 71 languages.

The App Pair feature allows you to get the most out of your phablet's wide screen. With it, you can link two applications that will work simultaneously. The function will appeal to those who like to watch videos while writing a message, for example.

IP68 means that after spending half an hour under water at a depth of 1.5 m, the Galaxy Note 8 will still work. The same goes for the S Pen.

Among other things, Galaxy Note 8 is equipped with an iris scanner to unlock the phablet.

The novelty will work with Samsun DeX - a docking station that allows you to use the device as a laptop computer(its cost is $150). The manufacturer introduced DeX along with the Galaxy S8, but it will be more suitable for Note 8 users who are more interested in performance.

What's in the Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Battery Life and Charging Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Given the problems with spontaneous combustion of Galaxy Note 7 batteries, it can be assumed that this time around the batteries have been more thoroughly tested. The new model received a smaller capacity battery - 3300 mAh compared to 3500 in Note 7. How will this affect the duration battery life phablet, it's too early to say. Capacity Galaxy battery The S8+ is 3500 mAh and lasts for 11 hours.

Galaxy Note 8 received support for wireless charging and is compatible with WPC and PMA standards. In addition, the device supports fast charging when using a charger,
compatible with Adaptive Fast Charging (AFC) or Quick Charge 2.0.

At the disposal of our Internet project was a new premium smartphone from Samsung - Galaxy Note 8. technical terms the novelty is an organic continuation flagship Samsung Galaxy S8. Among the differences are a screen diagonal that has grown to 6.3 inches, a drawing function using the S Pen stylus supplied in the kit, a dual camera, 6 GB of RAM, and a more strict appearance. At the start of sales, the price of the device is like that of a powerful laptop - from 69,990 rubles. Is Note 8 capable of becoming a full-fledged replacement for a computer, and is it that good?

The story of the spontaneously igniting batteries in the Note 7 last year did not stop the Korean company's plans to develop a line of ultra-large smartphones. Painstaking work has been carried out and now Samsung has assured that there are no problems with new model Note 8 will not. 146% guarantee!

The novelty itself turned out to be extremely interesting and rich in terms of functionality. Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has a strict appearance, and the glass and metal body received IP68 dust and water resistance. The most interesting visible part of the device was a 6.3-inch screen with curved edges on the sides. In terms of hardware, the novelty boasts the most productive hardware: an eight-core Exynos 8895 processor, Mali-G71 graphics, 6 GB of RAM. Built-in memory 64 GB, it can be supplemented with microSD memory cards (cards up to 250 GB are supported).

The smartphone supports all wireless communications - LTE Cat.16, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, Samsung Pay. The main camera received a dual module - 12 megapixels each, with the ability to record in 4K, optical stabilization and a dozen special regimes. Front camera 8 megapixels. To unlock the smartphone, you can use the built-in fingerprint scanner, as well as the iris and face recognition sensor. The device comes preloaded with Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system with Clean UI shell. According to assurances Samsung device can be updated to the latest android versions, including Android 8 Oreo.

Thanks to the DeX docking station, the phone can be turned into a full-fledged computer or something like it. This is especially true, given the price of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 at 70 thousand rubles.

Package contents and first impressions

id="sub1">

The premium quality of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (SM-N950) is evident in everything, including the packaging. So, the device comes in a box made of thick black cardboard on magnets with a dust jacket. The reverse side contains brief information about the technical characteristics. The name of the model is printed on the front. The image of the gadget is missing.

In the box you can see the device itself, as well as:

USB Charger Adapter Plug

Cable for synchronization with USB computer-USB Type C

MicroUSB to USB Type-C adapter (OTG adapter for connecting external devices)

AKG stereo headset with 3.5mm miniJack connector

Clip for SIM card tray

Instructions, warranty card

If we take the average data with a mixed mode of use, we get two days of battery life. Those who use only calls can easily count on 4 days of work. In terms of autonomy, the device differs for the better from the vast majority of Android smartphones.

The device has several power saving modes. Some of them limit the brightness of the backlight of the screen, the frequency of the processor. In this scenario, the operating time will increase by at least 20%. There is an extreme (maximum) power saving mode. In this case, the screen displays only white and grey colour, all applications except telephone connection, SMS, calendar and alarms are disabled.

The phone received a fast charging function. The battery is fully charged in 1 hour 5 minutes. There is also built-in wireless charging.

User interface and operating system

id="sub7">

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 comes preloaded with Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system and Clean UI user interface.

Smartphone owners have access to all branded Samsung programs, including S Health for monitoring physical activity and health, voice assistant Bixby, support for gestures, KNOX - for separating data into personal and work, etc. Missing apps can be downloaded from the Samsung App Store and Google Play. The model supports Samsung Pay service.

The smartphone has gesture control functions, S Pen drawing capabilities, which can make everyday use easier and more convenient. So, there is support for one-handed control and gestures.

The Smart Capture feature allows you to take a screenshot of even hidden areas of the screen, which is useful when you need to capture an entire page on the Internet or if the text does not fit on one screen.

With Game Launcher and Game Tools, you can turn off touch controls during gameplay to prevent accidental taps, quickly reply to a message without minimizing the game, or block any notifications altogether.

S Pen stylus

id="sub8">

As I noted just above, on the bottom end of the Galaxy Note 8 is the S Pen. It has a thinner tip, improved pressure sensitivity, and new features and functions. Here are some of them.

The Animated Messages feature allows you to share animated texts or pictures with friends using different platforms that support animated GIFs.

Screen Notebook allows you to store up to 100 pages of notes on your phone, which you can take immediately after removing the S Pen, “pin” notes on the screen off and then easily edit them later.

There is also an improved translation function using the S Pen. It allows you to quickly translate not only individual words, but also entire sentences in 71 languages, as well as convert foreign currencies and units of measurement. To do this, just point the electronic pen at right word on the smartphone screen.

Bixby voice assistant

id="sub9">

The voice assistant S Voice has become Bixby. Samsung strongly believes that its development will become something like Siri, Cortana or Google Assistant. Apart from standard recognition voice commands Bixby looks at the context in which the request is pronounced, that is, user behavior; the application that is open at the moment; location etc. . In fact, Bixby works with big data that your smartphone accumulates.

So far, Bixby's current features can't be called intelligent. The prediction system works correctly only in every second case. To train it, you need millions of people to start using Bixby, in such systems it doesn’t happen otherwise - the more they use it, the better they become.

According to analysts, a full-fledged version of Bixby with voice commands, prompts and other things will be released only in December 2017, along with an update to the device on Android 8. So we are waiting.

Camera. Photo and video capabilities

id="sub10">

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 received a dual main camera. These are two sensors of 12 megapixels each. One is a 1/2.55” sensor with a wide-angle lens (f/1.7), the other is a 1/3.6” telephoto (f/2.4), and it is this sensor that provides double optical zoom. There is phase detection autofocus, there is optical image stabilization. Thanks to the increased system performance and the fact that the camera module received its own memory, a comfortable Burst Mode appeared. This mode allows you to take several dozen shots in a row. In addition, the camera focuses on objects faster.

The camera takes slightly better pictures in difficult lighting conditions. In the settings you can find additional modes shooting, including PRO. The rest of the camera improvements are not as significant compared to its predecessors.

The camera interface is made in the traditional Samsung style. There are many settings and preset modes, including self-portrait, panorama, night, continuous shooting, HDR and GIF animation. Video capabilities allow you to shoot in 4K. In FullHD, you can choose between 60 or 30 frames per second. There is optical stabilization.

In manual ISO setting, the available ISO settings are 50, 100, 200, 400, 800. The following shooting modes are available: Single Shot, Smile Detection, Continuous, Panorama, Vintage, Portrait, Landscape, night mode, sports, indoors, beach/snow, sunset, dawn, autumn colors, fireworks, text, dusk, against light.

The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels. It is quite photosensitive (f / 1.7), a 1 / 3.6 ”matrix has autofocus. When shooting a selfie, it is possible to correct skin tone, face oval and eye size. There is also a panoramic selfie function, although the optics are already wide-angle – it will be possible to capture a small company without special modes.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a prime example of a very interesting premium device. It is clear that very wealthy people can afford it. The device is addressed primarily to creative and business audiences. For the first, the opportunity to draw on the screen of the device, as well as take pictures and shoot videos of yourself will come in handy. High Quality. The dual main camera is very good here. For the latter, the smartphone is suitable for working outside a stationary workplace. Here, the function of several windows in different applications is conveniently implemented, the ability to take some notes using the S Pen stylus, as well as a very solid battery life even under extreme load.

The advantages of the device, I can include a chic 6.3-inch screen, which occupies almost the entire front part. In addition, the device has a high-performance hardware stuffing with a large amount of RAM and built-in memory. The user interface flies, heavy games and videos work without slowdowns. There is a mode of operation with VR helmets and augmented reality programs.

I also note protection against dust and water according to the IP68 class. This allows the smartphone to be at a depth of up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. This, of course, does not mean that the phone can be washed under water and, moreover, the water resistance can be tested in washing machine. But if you drop it into water, nothing will happen to it. Convenient features include face recognition, iris scanner, gesture control, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, Samsung Pay.

By default, users have access to the S Health app to monitor their physical activity, KNOXX to create a secure data area. The main camera also turned out to be at a high level.
Among the minuses, one can note the risk of breaking the smartphone from the first fall on asphalt or stones. But in most cases, the screen suffers falls without consequences. Much more critical was the transfer of the fingerprint scanner to back panel smartphone. Because of this, using Samsung Pay has become unusual. Also, the minuses include a slot for memory cards combined with one of the SIM cards.

With regard to potential Samsung competitors Galaxy Note 8, then only the iPhone 8 Plus comes to mind. Both devices have cameras of comparable quality and performance. However, Note 8 looks more interesting in terms of appearance and various technical features. The device from Samsung is more versatile. It does not need to buy accessories worth 7-9 thousand rubles for wireless charging or listening to music at home.

The Internet project site expresses its gratitude to the MegaFon retail network for organizing the testing of the device.

Note's top-of-the-line products combine cutting-edge smartphone technology with a huge screen and a stylus. At the time of its announcement, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is one of the most technologically advanced smartphones of our time.

Phablet diagonal

The gadget has a typical phablet screen diagonal (6.3"), but it cannot be called too bulky. This is due to the fact that the screen of the device occupies about 83% of the area front panel. As usual, the screen is made using SuperAMOLED technology, has a huge resolution (2960x1440 pixels) and can display time, date and notification icons on a permanent basis. In general, the style of the smartphone largely repeats the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, with the only difference being that the beveled edges of the display do not bend so much to the sides. This is done for the convenience of handling the S-Pen stylus, the storage space for which is provided directly in the mobile phone case.

Full "stuffing"

Spectacular appearance is complemented by outstanding technical characteristics of the device. Its rich "decoration" includes advanced user authentication technologies (by retinal scanning and more traditional fingerprint recognition), fast and wireless charging technologies, equipped with a full set of wireless modules etc. The whole thing works under the control of a Samsung Exynos 8895 chip of its own design (for the US market, a version with a Snapdragon 835 processor is provided).

Dual photomodule

First among products samsung smartphone I got a dual main camera module (two sensors with a resolution of 12 MP each). Both PV modules are subject to optical system image stabilization, which is of particular relevance when shooting in low light conditions in portrait mode. This role is played by a module with a focal length of 56 mm and a maximum aperture of f / 2.4, while a conventional sensor shoots at a distance of 28 mm with f / 1.7 aperture. A cool software "chip" of the camera is the Live Focus function, which allows you to choose the degree of background blur behind the subject in the finished picture.

A treasure trove of technologies

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a storehouse of progressive technologies. Their simultaneous implementation in life had a negative impact on the cost of the model. However, in the absence equal to a smartphone the price tag on it looks justified, emphasizing the status of the product and its belonging to the premium segment.
