Sessions metric reflects the number of sessions for the selected reporting period. This term has many synonyms: visit, session, visit.

A session is a sequence of user interactions with a site that closes 30 minutes after the activity is terminated. The interaction is most often a page view, but there are other types (such as events or transactions).


Each session is tied to the user making it through cookies: if the visitor has them disabled, GoogleAnalytics will not capture such a session.

As soon as the user enters the site, the session acquires the "End Time" parameter. Each time a visitor performs an action recorded by GoogleAnalytics, the session expiration date is pushed back by half an hour. If the time of inactivity on the website lasts more than 30 minutes, all further activity will be attributed to a new session. If the pause between activities is less than half an hour, the session does not end. Let's look at an example.


In the first case, the user examines the product card and after 29 minutes goes to the cart. Cart browsing occurs within the current session, since 30 minutes have not yet passed since the last interaction, i.e. they are all performed in one session. Metric "Users" can be thought of as a kind of session container. A session that originates from the same browser that has the Google Analytics cookie for this site will be assigned to an already existing user. If there is no cookie, for the system it will be equivalent to the first visit to the website by a new user.

In fact, "Users" are unique cookies registered by the system for a selected period of time.

It is important to understand that this figure is not absolute. Let's assume that in the first week there were six sessions by four users (activity on four different cookies). In the second - six sessions committed by four users, and in the third - the same six sessions committed by three users. The system captures activity on different cookies for each week (reporting period), however, they may include the same users.


If we look at the statistics for the entire period, the system will show that four unique visitors were recorded on the site in three weeks, since only different visitors will be taken into account. cookies for the entire reporting period. Therefore, if you want to see similar statistics, say, for May, June, July, you must not summarize the data for each month, but take summary data for the period from May to July.

Page Views is a visit by a user to a page on a website that has a GoogleAnalytics tracking code installed.

Let's say a user came to the site at 10:00 - a new session was opened. At 10:05 he moved to the next page, the duration of the session reached 5 minutes. At 10:15 he moved to another section, which was the last one in the session. We do not know how much time the user spent on last page because GoogleAnalytics was no longer receiving interaction data. Therefore, the session will last from 10:00 to 10:15 and will be 15 minutes long.

Session duration is calculated without taking into account user activity since the last interaction and reflects only known browsing time. At the same time, the fact that 5 minutes have passed between visiting the first and second pages does not mean at all that the user has been studying the content presented on the page all this time: it could well be on another browser tab. However, the average session duration is an indicator of user loyalty. So, if the time of interaction with the site has increased compared to the previous period, it means that users have begun to spend more time on the resource (they like new content, functionality, etc.).

Bounce rate is the percentage of sessions during which only one page was viewed.

There is no other interpretation for this concept in Google Analytics. The number of abandoned visits can also include such visits when the user carefully studied the contents of the page he visited, but instead of going further to look for something on the site, he made a call. Good visit? Good. But denied. When considering the methodology for estimating the duration of a session, we noted that the last view has zero duration, since the session is considered ended at the moment of the final interaction (transition to a page, section, etc.). It turns out that if the user went to the site, studied the content of the page in detail and left the resource, he spent zero seconds on it. It really is. And, if no additional settings are provided, such a session will be counted as a refusal - the user's refusal to interact with this site.

An important difference between the calculation of the bounce rate in Google Analytics and Yandex Metrica is that the last bounce is considered a visit during which the user was on one page and spent less than 15 seconds viewing it. Due to this interpretation, the number of bounced visits in Yandex.Metrica is less than in Analytics. This does not mean that one of the systems is more accurate, they just have different methods of counting.

“Average session duration” is calculated as the sum of the duration of all failed sessions (0 seconds each) and the duration of all failed sessions, divided by the total number of sessions, i.e. the average is “blurred” by failed ones.

Segmentation allows you to understand how long non-failure sessions last on average. To configure it, click on the plate of the "All sessions" segment, go to the "Built-in" section (standard GoogleAnalytics segments). Select the "Sessions without failures" segment, click "Apply".


Percentage of new sessions shows the percentage of new user sessions (the fact that a new cookie was created and sent to the browser) and is calculated as the ratio of the number of new visits to the total number of visits for a certain period of time. It is important to understand that if a user visits a site for the first time with home computer, its session is bound to the browser. However, if after that he makes a second visit from a smartphone, this visit will be new for GoogleAnalytics and will be linked to mobile browser. The service will register two new users.

The percentage of new sessions, although it has an error in accounting for unique users, on a site scale reflects the dynamics of traffic growth and the effectiveness of attracting new potential customers.

    "Sources"- the way a visitor gets to your site.

    • "Direct summary" - general information on various campaigns in Yandex.Direct;
    • "Direct - sites" - statistics of clicks from various sites where ads are shown through Direct. Separately for search and separately for YAN;
    • "Direct - expenses" - statistics on the number of visits made on various advertising campaigns and requests.

    • View Depth - segments users by the number of pages they have viewed;
    • “Time on site” is the same, but by the time they spent on the site;

    • "Time since the last visit" - how much time passes from the penultimate to the last (on this moment) visit.
  1. The next three reports require additional settings, so I'll just list them:

    • "Parameters of visits";
    • "Visitors parameters";
    • "Settings for Online Stores".
  2. "Technologies"- allows you to see what devices, browsers and other technologies your site visitors use. Allows you to understand for whom you need to optimize the site in the first place, as well as to detect “bottlenecks” leading to a large number failures.

    • "Browsers" - which browsers (Google Chrome, Yandex.Browser, Firefox, Safari, etc.) are used by visitors;
    • "Display resolution" - what resolutions are used (sorted by width and height);
    • "Operating Systems" - Windows, iOS, Mac OS, Linux and others;
    • “Devices” means PCs, smartphones and tablets. The last 2 categories are divided into brands and models of devices;
    • "Flash Versions" - Flash Player which version is used by visitors;
    • "Silverlight Versions" - what version of Microsoft Silverlight is used by visitors;
    • "Presence of ad blockers" - statistics for users who use (or do not use) an ad blocker;
    • "Java Availability" - statistics for users using (or not using) Java;
    • "Presence of Cookies" - statistics for users who have cookies enabled (or disabled / not supported);
    • "JavaScript presence" - statistics for users who have JavaScript enabled (or disabled / not supported).
  3. "Monitoring"- reports on the quality of the site.

    • "Load on the site" - how many visitors were online and how many requests per second they made (again - the maximum);
    • "Traffic by minutes" - how many views were made by site users;
    • "Page loading time" - how quickly different pages of the site are loaded (with the possibility of segmentation by different countries);
    • "Scan results" - the availability of the site for the selected time interval;
    • "Robots" - statistics of site visits by search engine robots.
  4. "Target Call"- analysis of calls received on the site. In order to obtain information using these reports, you need additional setting, so we will not consider it in detail.

    "E-commerce"- the same applies to this item. It is not for beginners, so it makes little sense to consider it in a review article.
