It is worth noting the fact that the Samsung S8500 Wave is very pleasant in everyday use due to the successful implementation of phone functions, high-quality screen and responsive touch controls. It is the telephone part that is the weakest point of devices based on the Android OS - I personally have the impression that Google engineers first of all made an OS for Internet tablets, and added phone functions later, in a hurry, not caring about the convenience of their implementation. Not so with the Samsung S8500 Wave, as Samsung remembers that a phone has to be a phone first and foremost.
At a price of around UAH 4,000, the Samsung S8500 Wave is a very good purchase (especially considering that its predecessor, Jet, cost about UAH 5,000 at the start).

but there are tools available that allow you to install one of the systems quite easily. It is recommended to go step by step, following the instructions for installing the software, starting with the first method.
Method 1: Firmware BadaOS 2.0.1
Samsung Wave GT-S8500 should officially run BadaOS. To restore the device in case of loss of performance, update the software, and prepare the smartphone for further installation of modified OS, follow the steps below, which involve using the MultiLoader application as a manipulation tool.
- Download the package with BadaOS from the link below and unpack the archive with files into a separate directory.
- Unpack the file with the flash driver and open MultiLoader_V5.67 by double-clicking on the application icon in the resulting directory.

The example below uses the Android KitKat port, specially modified by enthusiasts for the device in question. You can download the archive containing everything you need from the link:
- Install Bada 2.0 by following the steps of Method #1 of the Samsung Wave GT-S8500 firmware above in the article.
- Download and unpack the archive with the necessary files for installing Android KitKat using the link above. Also unpack the archive BOOTFILES_S8500XXKL5.zip. The result should be the following:
- Launch the flash driver and write three components from the unpacked archive to the device:
- Add files in the same way as the instructions for installing Bada, then connect the phone, put into system software download mode, to the USB port and press Download.
- The result of the previous step will be rebooting the device in TeamWinRecovery (TWRP).
- Follow the path: "Advanced" — Terminal Command — Select.
- Return to the main TWRP screen by pressing the button three times Back, choose an item Reboot, then Recovery and flip the switch Swipe to Reboot to the right.
- After Recovery restarts, connect your smartphone to the PC and press the buttons: Mount, "Enable MTP".

The biggest downside is bada (note I'm not the only one who thinks so). There are very few applications, there is no way to watch videos on the Internet, since there is no flash player for this OS.

The Samsung Wave uses a 1500 mAh battery. Samsung claims 7 (3G) or 15 (2G) hours of talk time and 550 (3G) or 600 (2G) hours of standby time. The video playback time is about 9 hours, and in the music playback mode with the screen turned off, the device worked for exactly 32 hours and 11 minutes - a very good result.
With typical urban use, the device is able to work for about 2 days with a small number of calls, a large number network traffic(Push mail synchronization, frequent web browsing, etc.) and active use of an MP3 player and FM radio. By the way, almost all Android devices with my usage model do not survive until the end of the working day. This also applies samsung galaxy S, which is almost identical to the S8500 in terms of hardware. From this I can conclude that operating system bada is better optimized in terms of power consumption.
Performance
Unfortunately, there are currently no benchmarks for bada, so it is not possible to adequately measure the performance of the Samsung Wave. Subjectively, the device works very quickly. This impression is confirmed by the quality of graphics and performance in games for bada.
Menu, interface
The interface, compared to TouchWiz 2.0, has been significantly redesigned, but not beyond recognition. If you have had a Samsung device before, you will most likely quickly find mutual language with wave. TouchWiz 3.0 supports multiple desktops (up to 10), each desktop can host as many widgets as you like. If you flip your phone to landscape mode while editing widgets, you will be taken to the interface for removing and adding desktops.
Bada has a system notification area - to open it, you need to touch the status bar at the top of the screen. Here you can enable/disable wireless interfaces or put the phone in silent mode, notifications of new messages and letters are also displayed here. If you have an active player or FM receiver, playback control buttons will appear in the control area.
The lock screen is quite traditional - after pressing the unlock key, you need to swipe your finger across the entire screen to unlock the phone. If you're listening to music or the radio, a CD icon appears at the top of the lock screen. Clicking on it opens the player control panel.
The main menu has a flat structure (no folders or subfolders). It is divided into several screens, the navigation between them is cyclic. The location of the icons can be changed arbitrarily. If at the same time, by analogy with the desktop, turn the phone in horizontal position, a window for deleting and/or adding menu pages will open. In the settings, you can enable automatic ordering of icons: in this mode, Wave itself keeps track of which menu items you use most often and changes their order accordingly.
The device supports limited multitasking: several devices can be running at the same time. system applications, one bada application and one Java program. The task manager, as before, is called by a long press on the menu key.
Samsung Apps
Samsung Apps is Samsung's app store, which in its ideology is very similar to Apple App Store or Android Market. Applications can be sorted by popularity, categories, price, and so on. At present, only free applications are available in Samsung Apps in Ukraine, the full launch of the store should take place before the end of September, this will allow Ukrainian users to access more than 1000 applications, among which there is also a package for working with Microsoft documents office.
It is worth noting that Samsung is currently running a promotion where you can download several quality games for free, including NFS Shift, Bruce Lee: The Dragon Warrior, Kroll and the very nice platformer Nom Zero. Apps can only be installed from the store Samsung apps Apps (either directly on your phone or via Samsung program Kies), and Kies supports installation free apps, designed for any markets, but only those programs that are available in the local (Ukrainian) Samsung Apps are directly available on the phone.
Phone functions: "dialer", call history
Direct phone functions in the Samsung S8500 are implemented more conveniently than in any Android-smartphone. "Dialer" is made very well, the virtual numeric keys are large and well readable. The call history is very well done, which shows a detailed list of incoming and outgoing calls for each contact, indicating the date, time and duration of each call.
Contacts, calendar and others
The phone book is admirable, it allows you to record almost any conceivable information about a contact. You can choose to sort by first name or last name, there is a quick navigation by the first letters of the name. Contacts are fully integrated with social networks, any person can be linked to his account on Twitter, Facebook and so on. Of course, for each contact you can see the history of calls and correspondence, status updates in in social networks and related photos (from the same social networks).
The calendar has a nice interface. Traditionally, you can display a schedule for a specific day, week, or month.
Working with messages, on-screen keyboard
Working with messages is organized in the style of the iPhone - they are displayed in the form of conversations. At the bottom of the screen there is an input field, by clicking on it, you immediately begin to write an answer to your neighbor. According to the interface logic, there is no difference between SMS and MMS: if you attach an attachment to a regular text message, it automatically turns into a multimedia one.
The on-screen keyboard in Samsung Wave is implemented very well. First, it supports switching languages with one button. Secondly, you can add languages to the list yourself. fast switching in settings. Thirdly, when you long press the spacebar, a panel pops up with the most commonly used punctuation marks, so there is no need to switch to character mode. The phone uses a Samsung proprietary browser based on the WebKit engine. The speed and rendering quality are very good, multi-touch is supported, you can open several windows at the same time. By analogy with the iPhone browser, you can double-click on a column of text so that the phone automatically expands it to the full width of the screen.
The current firmware of the phone supports Flash, but its stability leaves much to be desired: when you try to go to the flash-game.net website and play any game, the browser inevitably crashes. In addition, on pages with Flash banners, the browser began to noticeably slow down, so, in my opinion, it is better to turn off Flash in Samsung Wave today.
Social media
Samsung Wave initially has clients for Facebook and Twitter. The Facebook client is very good and can completely replace accessing the site through a desktop browser.
But the Twitter client causes a lot of criticism. It is limited in its capabilities, for example, you cannot publish photos, nicknames of users in tweets are not displayed as links, the client cannot constantly work as background process and notify you of new messages. Music player. The MP3 player in the Samsung Wave features Disk UI, which was first introduced to the Samsung Jet after a firmware update in late 2009. The album cover is displayed as large as possible, below it there are playback control buttons. To see the rest of the controls, you need to click once on the album cover; the next click on it hides them back.
The quality of music playback from the Wave is very pleasant, the phone has a bass and collected sound. I listened to it with a variety of mid-range headphones, from Sennheiser CX300-II, Philips SHE9500 and AKG K330 earplugs to full-size Sennheiser HD215 and Grado SR60. With all these "ears" the S8500 sounded pretty good, the phone's volume margin is just great. In my opinion, among modern phones, Samsung devices are confidently leading in terms of sound quality.
The bundled headset, by the way, is quite decent in terms of the quality of music playback, but there are complaints about its microphone - when I tried to talk on it, the interlocutors complained that they could not hear me well. Another disadvantage is that the kit comes with rubber nozzles of only one size, for me, for example, they turned out to be small. Of the pleasant little things, it is worth noting the fact that now when you pull out the headphones, the phone does not yell all over the street, but intelligently pauses music playback. Video player. Out of the box, the phone can play videos in a variety of formats (WMV, H.264, DivX/Xvid), and even the rather exotic MKV container is supported. The maximum resolution of videos is 1280x720 pixels, while scrolling even files with HD resolution is carried out without the slightest brakes.
The player allows you to adjust the color settings (if desired, the image can be made warmer or colder), stretch the image to full screen or display it in its original format, etc. FM radio. Samsung Wave is equipped with the most common FM receiver with the most common interface. One of the nice features is the ability to record radio, recording is made in MP3 format with a bit rate of 192 kbps, the maximum recording time is limited by free space in the phone's memory.
Camera
The phone is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED backlight.
The camera interface has changed little compared to Jet, the main difference is Touch Focus support (by pressing the screen you can focus the area). The user can manually set the sensitivity, white balance, and so on.
In daylight, the quality of the resulting images can be called good without any discounts for their telephone nature. Thanks to autofocus, the camera shoots well in macro mode.
In addition to photos, the camera can record video at a resolution of 1280x720 pixels with a refresh rate of 30 frames per second.
Although fast-moving subjects in the video look a little "jerky", in general, the video quality is very good.
WiFi
The phone is equipped with a 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi module, WEP, WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK encryption is supported. In general, working with Wi-Fi has become significantly less problematic compared to the Samsung Jet, I only once had to deal with the fact that the phone could not connect to the network.
Another nice thing is the ability to work as a mobile hotspot. In this mode, Wave acts as a 3G router for other devices (such as laptops, for example).
In the dry matter
Samsung Wave is one of the best mobile phones of 2010, there is no doubt about it. It combines a powerful hardware platform with an exciting new operating system and unmatched multimedia capabilities. Of course, there were some rough edges (such as difficulties when setting up Exchange ActiveSync), but they will certainly be fixed in new firmware versions. Worth noting is the fact that the S8500 is very pleasant in everyday use due to the successful implementation of phone functions, a high-quality screen and responsive touch controls. It is the phone part that is the weakest point of devices based on the Android OS - I personally have the impression that Google engineers first of all made the OS for Internet tablets, and added phone functions later, in a hurry, not caring about the convenience of their implementation. This is not the case with the Samsung Wave, as Samsung remembers that a phone must be a phone first and foremost. At a price of around UAH 4,000, Samsung Wave is a very good purchase (especially considering that its predecessor, Jet, cost about UAH 5,000 at the start). With all of the above in mind, we have decided to award the Samsung S8500 Wave mobile phone our highest award, Editors' Choice.
