Smartphones (world market). Who's Who in the Smartphone Market: Big IDC Report Smartphone Sales

The report was prepared on the basis of analytical data and forecasts of the Euroset marketing department.

I. Dynamics of sales in the smartphone market in the Russian Federation for January - May 2016

In the first 5 months of 2016, 9.1 million devices were sold on the Russian smartphone market, which is 7% more than in the same period of 2015. Revenue from sales of smartphones amounted to 112 billion rubles, which is 35% more than the sales results of the previous year. The average purchase price increased by 26% and amounted to 12,300 rubles.

For comparison, the smartphone market for 5 months of 2015 in relation to 5 months of 2014 in sales fell by 7%.

In monetary terms, the market in 2015 grew by only 6%, and the average price - by 13%. This confirms the findings on the market impact in 2016 of the price reduction campaign supported by retailers in early April.

The campaign to reduce prices was initiated by Euroset, which at the same time launched an advertisement on TV channels with the participation of Ivan Okhlobystin - "Ivan Okhlobystin announces price cuts in Euroset." The average price of smartphones and tablets in the 1st quarter of 2016 increased significantly, which, of course, had a negative impact on consumer behavior. The population has significantly less money, and in order to buy a smartphone or tablet, they had to cut themselves in some other expenses. Anticipating this situation, at the end of 2015, Euroset began preparations for a campaign to reduce prices for smartphones throughout the Russian market. At the same time, purchases of goods reached such a quantity that allowed Euroset to influence the change in pricing for smartphones among all market participants. It's about about billions of rubles. On March 30, Euroset reduced prices from 5 to 50% for almost the entire commodity matrix.

Naturally, the market did not keep itself waiting long and reacted with similar actions, after which more than one wave of price reductions took place. We continue to constantly analyze the new prices of competitors, reduce prices in our stores, and will continue to adhere to this policy in the future.

Within a week after the announcement of price cuts in the Euroset, all market participants announced similar cuts, after which there have been several waves of decline so far.

As a result, prices for smartphones have decreased for all market participants from 3 to 45%, devices have become more affordable, the frequency of purchases has increased, and as a result, campaigns to reduce prices, and the average bill of purchased devices. For example, the price of premium segments fell significantly, which attracted additional demand to them. And if in 2015 the growth of the average check compared to 2014 is explained by the increase in prices, which is confirmed by the decrease in the market in piece terms by 7%, then in 2016 the average check grew by 26%, and the frequency of purchases - by 7%.

A clear confirmation of the increase in consumer demand in 2016 is the April figures, which for two years until 2016 were traditionally lower than March by 20% both in units and in money (see Charts 3.4).

In April 2016, sales sank by only 7% compared to March. Thus, the decline in prices pumped consumer demand and the market, and slowed down the decline in sales month by month, both in quantity and in money, by almost 3 times.

In addition, the “April price reduction” made it possible to return sales in quantitative terms to the level of 2014 (1.7 million units), despite the fact that in April 2015, compared to the same period last year, there was a drop of 13% ( from 1.7 to 1.5 million units).

II. Structure of sales of smartphones in the Russian market by price segments

People began to buy more expensive smartphone models more often, and therefore the average price on the market in April compared to March 2016 did not change (12.5 thousand rubles), and compared to February current year it increased by 3% (from 12.1 to 12.5 thousand rubles). The smartphone, which only yesterday cost several thousand more, has become available at a more attractive price. Thus, the "April price cut" pumped almost all segments, but especially premium smartphones, from 20 thousand rubles.

In April 2016, in the price segment from 20 to 30 thousand rubles, 165 thousand smartphones were sold for the amount of 3.9 billion rubles, which is more than the same period in 2015 by 230% in quantity and by 209% in money terms. In the price segment over 30 thousand rubles, 141 thousand devices were sold for a total of 6.7 billion rubles, which is 85% higher in quantity and 98% in terms of money. And if April 2015 in the expensive segment of 20-30 thousand rubles is 36% lower compared to March 2015 (50 thousand units against 78 thousand units), then in April 2016 the fall compared to March 2016 amounted to only 10% (165 thousand units against 183 thousand units).

III. The structure of sales in the smartphone market of the Russian Federation by vendors for January - May 2016

A number of graphs show the results of sales for the period under review in the smartphone market by vendor, including sales in absolute terms, the dynamics of sales in quantity and money, and the distribution of vendor shares in the smartphone market.

Of the TOP-3 vendors in the smartphone market, Apple increased its sales the most - by 74%, Samsung least of all - by 6%. It should be noted that both players launched new smartphones during this period, Apple - iPhone SE (April 5, 2016), Samsung - Galaxy S7 Edge (March 18, 2016).

Lenovo sales in quantity also showed strong growth - by 19%.

Shares of three leaders in the market of smartphones from January to May, 2016 in sales were distributed as follows:

  • Samsung's share in the quantity was 21%
  • share of Apple in quantity - 11%
  • Lenovo share in quantity - 9%

In monetary terms, Apple came out on top, outperforming Samsung by 8 p.p., and the shares of the main players were distributed as follows:

  • Apple's share in revenue was - 33%
  • Samsung share in revenue - 25%
  • Lenovo share in revenue - 7%

Thus, out of the three leaders, only Samsung did not show a positive trend in terms of share, having lost positions in terms of revenue compared to the five months of 2015 - by 1 percentage point (from 26% to 25%). In quantity, as we see from the chart above, there was no positive dynamics either.

According to the results of five months of 2016, Apple is ahead of Samsung in money terms by 8 p.p., while Apple's share in units increased by 4 p.p. over the year. (from 7% to 11%), in money by 9 p.p. (from 24% to 33%).

The share of Lenovo for 5 months of 2016 compared to the previous year increased by 1 percentage point in quantity, there was no dynamics in revenue.

On the graph, the "Other" item includes the following players - Acer, Asus, Blackberry, HTC, Highscreen, Huawei, Micromax, Prestigio, Phillips, etc. In total, about 100 vendors are represented on the market.

The Euroset company analyzed general market sales Samsung flagships and Apple monthly. In March-May 2016, 121.7 thousand iPhone 6 /iPhone 6 Plus smartphones were sold in the amount of 5.1 billion rubles against 34.5 thousand units samsung galaxy S 6 / S6 Edge in the amount of 1.3 billion rubles. In the same period, 132,000 iPhone 6S/iPhone 6S Plus worth 7.7 billion rubles were sold against 63.2 thousand Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge worth 3.4 billion rubles.

Despite the fact that iPhone SE sales were not taken into account, Apple's superiority in sales of comparable flagships and periods is obvious, as is the conclusion: both by model and in general consideration, Apple's sales both in pieces and in money are ahead of comparable Samsung sales. Apple flagships are on sale better than flagships Samsung at times.

The top five for 5 months of 2016 included the following manufacturers: LG, which increased the number of devices sold by 103% from 205 to 416 thousand units; ZTE by 76% from 315 to 554 thousand units; Apple by 74% from 566 to 986 thousand units; Lenovo by 19% from 707 to 843 thousand units; Alcatel by 13% from 660 to 749 thousand units.

Samsung took only the 6th position in dynamics, having increased the number of devices sold in relation to the 5th month of the last year by only 6% from 1805 to 1909 thousand units.

The top five in terms of revenue growth from smartphones sold in 5 months of 2016 compared to last year's results are as follows:

  • ZTE increased revenue by 184% from 1 to 3 billion rubles;
  • LG by 125% from 2 to 5 billion rubles;
  • Apple by 83% from 20 to 37 billion rubles;
  • Lenovo +37% from RUB 5 billion to RUB 8 billion;
  • Samsung +29% from RUB 22 billion to RUB 28 billion

Alcatel was on the sixth line, its revenue grew by 18% from 2.9 to 3.5 billion rubles.

Consider the dynamics of other brands.

Of the relatively new Chinese brands, ZTE is gradually striving for leadership and demonstrating impressive growth, which in 5 months of 2016 increased its own sales by 76% in quantity (from 315 to 545 thousand units), in money terms by 184% (from 1 to 3 billion rubles), the share in units increased by 2 percentage points (from 4% to 6%), in money terms by 2 percentage points (from 1% to 3%). The positive dynamics was influenced by the vendor's assortment policy - the consumer was offered a lot of fairly modern smartphones in inexpensive segments, as well as several top models at prices below the market average (with similar characteristics).

LG for 5 months of 2016 compared to the same period last year in absolute terms increased sales in quantity by 103% (from 205 to 416 thousand units), in revenue by 125% (from 2 to 5 billion rubles). The share of the vendor increased in quantity from 2 to 5%, in revenue from 2 to 4%. The reason for this was the introduction to the market interesting smartphones Leon, Magna, Spirit, which in the inexpensive segment from 5 to 10 thousand rubles offer good set characteristics and functions.

Decrease in absolute sales of Nokia/Microsoft in units by 77% (from 898 to 205 thousand units), in money terms by 65% (from 6 to 2 billion rubles) and shares from 11% to 2% in units and from 7% up to 2% in money, due to a small number of interesting models, as well as a "dying" OS Windows phone, because the lack of games, applications and modern software features, has a negative impact on the dynamics of demand.

On the decrease in absolute sales of Sony in units by 44% (from 397 to 242 thousand units), in money terms by 29% (from 7 to 5 billion rubles), as well as the share in quantity (from 5% to 2%) and in money (from 8% to 4%), the high price of devices for average functional characteristics affects. There are many vendors on the market now offering the most favorable price / quality ratio for the consumer.

IV. Summary.

Alexey Shirokov, Head of Purchasing at Euroset: “Demand for mobile devices could increase significantly if the most advantageous offers from manufacturers - a low price for a high-quality device with advanced functionality. The active entry of Chinese manufacturers such as ZTE, Huawei, Xiaomi, Nubia, Meizu into the market with prices that are more attractive in terms of price / quality ratio than those of the market leaders will also become a driver for increasing sales. We believe that the level of consumption cell phones and smartphones in total in 2016 will be at the level of 2015 or slightly lower, which will be associated with the ongoing recession in the economy. We expect to reach the pre-crisis level and above around 2018.

The "April price reduction", initiated by Euroset, had a beneficial effect on the entire market. Smartphones have become more affordable for the population, which made it possible to buy the most expensive devices, a clear confirmation of the increase in sales of smartphones in the expensive segment. In addition, we are seeing an increase in the frequency of purchases and an increase in the average check.

Russian market mobile devices will continue to develop, including due to the growing demand for wearable gadgets. Modern conditions oblige a person to be ultra-mobile, and wearable gadgets are his main assistants. Today, a compact mobile device can replace desktop computer and even surpass it in terms of functionality.

LTE technology is certainly interesting to the consumer and will continue its development. So far, this technology is in demand only by a narrow part of the population. For the general public, this abbreviation still means little, the choice in favor of LTE devices is made unconsciously and most often under the influence of advertising. However, it is already difficult for 4G users to return to lower level standards. Accordingly, they unconsciously become hostages of LTE. To date, the policy of operators to attract subscribers to LTE networks explains to the mass consumer the advantages of this data transmission standard. In addition, today all new-brands, when a new model is released, starting from the middle price segment, began to declare support for 4G by default. This factor has also become a growth driver for new brands. The development prospects for these devices on the market are really wide.

Expanding trend model range NFC-enabled mobile devices will continue. Today, almost all smartphones are equipped with this feature, as manufacturers understand that this service is the future of cashless payments. In confirmation of this, we see an increase in the number and volume of contactless payment transactions that Euroset recently launched using the Kukuruza card.

The main trend of the future is the integration of the Wellness platform into smartphones, which will allow people to maintain a healthy lifestyle using their device."

The mobile products of the current Nokia, which are regulated by HMD Global, have little in common with the original and conceptual mobile electronics of the Finnish brand of the 2000s. Attempts to give the legendary name a second life resulted in the release of controversial in all respects Nokia smartphones 2, Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6, Nokia 7 and Nokia 8, as well as the re-release of the Nokia 3310, Nokia 105, Nokia 130 dialers and the emergence of a mobile Nokia phone 150.

Despite the frankly inflated cost of Android gadgets of modern Nokia, according to the research organization Counterpoint Research, throughout 2017 there was a clear upward trend in sales of branded smartphones. Demand for HMD/Nokia products in numerical terms is shown in the diagram below.

Recall that Nokia's re-entry into the mobile electronics market was marked by the announcement, which was initially available only in the Middle Kingdom. There, in the first three months of 2017, it sold 100,000 copies.

In the second quarter, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 became available for order, with which HMD Global began to actively win the trust of users in the international arena. The former reputation of Nokia, which its current owners have staked on, contributed to the formation of a positive perception of the debuted Android smartphones. This resulted in an additional 1.4 million mobile devices sold worldwide.

According to analysts' preliminary estimates, Q3 doubled HMD's sales compared to the previous period. This state of affairs promised good prospects for the further popularization of the updated Nokia and made it possible to expand the mobile range. Recall that at the same time the premiere of “dialers” under the control of Series 30+ took place, and then the release followed. At the same time, sales of push-button mobile phones from Nokia are even better: in the III quarter they reached 13.5 million copies.

In the final three months of 2017, HMD managed to account for 4.15 million smartphones, making Nokia a manufacturer that accounts for 1% of smartphones sold worldwide. For the whole of 2017, 8.45 million units of smartphones were shipped under the Nokia brand.

HMD Global itself has not yet published the final financial report, and all the above statistics are the result of a thorough market research by reputable think tanks.

The first half of 2017 was a record for unit sales of smartphones in Russia, exceeding the figures for 2014 by almost 8% for the first time, according to an analytical report by M_mobile, the telecom division of M.Video. The increase compared to the same period in 2016 is 9.7%. Residents of Russia in January-June 2017 purchased 12.4 million smartphones, sales amounted to 157.5 billion rubles. In the first half of 2014, 11.5 million smartphones were bought for 99.4 billion rubles.

Smartphone sales in 2014 - 2017

July 2017 showed the maximum positive dynamics: unit sales of smartphones in July this year are higher than July 2016 by 16% and higher than July 2014 by 27%. In general, July for 2017 was a record year in terms of growth compared to the same month of the previous year.

Smartphone sales in July 2014 - 2017

“Since the beginning of 2017, manufacturers and retailers have reduced the prices of smartphones several times in stages, which stimulated the interest of buyers. Since the beginning of 2017, Chinese brands have been the market driver since the beginning of 2017 - Huawei, Meizu, ZTE, Xiaomi, which have already moved into the middle and middle plus price segments, occupied 20% of the market in the first half of the year and continue to strengthen their positions. The effect was reinforced by successful launches of new products from Samsung, LG and Chinese brands. The steady growth of the market both in turnover and physical sales continues in July. We expect that the second half of the year should be no less positive in light of the start of sales of new models,” says Sergey Sukhorukov, head of the mobile equipment department at M.Video.

M.Video has been operating more efficiently than the market over the years: Russians began to choose these stores twice as often to purchase smartphones, the market in pieces grew by 20% from 2014 to 2017. In-network cash sales have more than tripled, while the market has less than doubled over the same period.

The line of brands has noticeably changed over the past three years. In 2014, a number of A-brands were introduced to the market, and the Chinese brands that are trending now were virtually invisible. The only Chinese brand that even then began to win back a share - Huawei, in 2014 it occupied a share of less than 3% and was not even in the top ten in unit sales. According to the results of the half year in 2017, Huawei / Honor takes the third place after the traditional leaders Samsung and Apple. Featured in 2014 Nokia, Sony, HTC, in 2017 are almost invisible. Alcatel, although it slightly reduced its share, did not give up its overall positions. The most popular smartphone manufacturers are Samsung and Apple. The leader in unit sales, as in 2014, is Samsung. Its share increased by a third compared to 2014. The leader in sales in money was and remains Apple.

OS. In 2014, the share of Windows Phone was still quite noticeable, it fluctuated within half a year in the range from 4% to 5% in monetary terms. In 2017, there are actually two systems on the market: iOs and Android. The latter accounts for more than 60% of the market in money terms.

Mobile Internet. In 2014, in the first half of the year, almost 11% of unit sales are still occupied by smartphones with 2G. The share of 4G is only 13%. In 2017, 4G is 70% of the smartphone market. That is, sales of smartphones with 4G increased by almost six times.

Mobile Internet in 2014 and 2017

Screen diagonal. In 2014, the most popular screen size was 3.7 to 5 inches (70% of unit sales). Smartphones with a larger diagonal have just begun to develop - their share was about 4%. And at that time there were still devices on the market with a diagonal of less than 3 ”(specifically smartphones, not mobile phones).

In 2017, almost 50% of the market is occupied by smartphones with a diagonal of 5 to 5.5 inches. Demand for all other options with a smaller diagonal is gradually falling. And the diagonal from 5.5 to 6 "is growing due to the expansion of the functionality of the smartphone and the need to solve more complex tasks with it.

Sales of smartphones in regions

In the first half of 2017, smartphones were most in demand in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Nizhny Novgorod. If the country's average sales of smartphones in the first half of 2017 increased by 8% compared to the same period in 2014, then in a number of cities the increase was higher.

06/21/2017, Wed, 16:45, Moscow time , Text: Vladimir Bakhur

According to the latest data from IDC, in the I quarter. In 2017, the Russian smartphone market recovered from the decline after the weakening of the ruble and went up sharply, including due to sales of more expensive models.

Pre-crisis demand for smartphones returns to Russia

The Russian representative office of IDC has released a fresh report on the dynamics of the market for mobile communication devices for the 1st quarter. 2017 According to the data provided, from January to March 2017, 8.438 million mobile phones were delivered to Russia, which is almost 17.5% higher than in the first quarter of last year.

"Height average price of the sold smartphones became for us the main surprise, - noted Natalia Vinogradova, senior analyst at IDC Russia. “It was $208, which is forty dollars more than in the last quarter of 2016.”

IDC analysts note that simple push-button phones are still in demand. This trend, according to IDC, is now characteristic of the whole world, so oblivion does not threaten them.

“Although the Goskomstat reports do not yet reflect a real recovery in total consumer spending in Russia, it seems that consumers are again spending more money to buy smartphones,” says Simon Baker(Simon Baker), IDC CEMA Mobile Phone Market Research Program Manager.

One sign of the market recovering from the currency turmoil was the fact that the share of LTE handsets has started to rise again, after having remained unchanged for the previous three quarters. Now this standard is supported by two-thirds of phones sold in Russia, and it is gradually becoming the "new normal".

“After the weakening of the ruble at the end of 2014, prices for smartphones based on Android in the Russian market were on average lower than in other countries of Central and Eastern Europe, as consumers continued to be interested in smartphones based on the same price category in rubles, as before the crisis. Now the situation has changed,” says Simon Baker.

Increasing competition among brands in Russia

According to the IDC report, in the I quarter. In 2017, the Russian market of mobile devices saw significant changes in the position of suppliers. Huawei's popularity is skyrocketing; this is especially true for the budget brand Honor, which in Russia is already ready to compete with the Huawei brand itself.

Among other Chinese brands, a good position in the segment entry level occupy ZTE smartphones Blade.

At the same time, note in IDC, Lenovo has somewhat lost its position: in the I quarter. In 2017, the share of this company was less than one percent, while at the peak of popularity, in the third quarter of 2015, it was 18%.

In general, the trend is that the more established brands are gaining momentum in general, while the Russian-oriented Fly products and products of the regional DEXP electronics chain have been struggling lately.

The upper segment of the Russian mobile phone market is still dominated by Apple. It was worthy of competition only by Samsung: expensive Samsung phones The 7 and 7 Plus, according to IDC, "sell great in Russia," as did the earlier 6 and 6 Plus models.

According to Natalia Vinogradova, sales of Samsung products are still starting to decline.

Champion of sales in Russia among Apple devices was the iPhone 7, which managed to push the iPhone 6S models, while importing cheaper iPhone models SE even decreased somewhat.

Summing up the results in the I quarter. 2017 and noting their generally positive trend, IDC still expresses some concerns for the near future.

“In the second quarter of last year, we already saw a certain movement towards more expensive phones- said Simon Baker - when the ruble rose sharply. But this hope turned out to be false. Oil prices continue to fluctuate and may fall again, and the ruble will fall with them. But we can certainly be sure that the golden days of high exchange rate will not return soon, and the Russian mobile phone market will remain a market with very high price competition compared to, for example, Western Europe.”

Prospects for the global smartphone market

According to the IDC presented at the beginning of June, 2017 on development of the world market of smartphones, it expects full recovery until the end of this year with total annual sales of 1.52 billion units - mainly due to upcoming interesting announcements.

Further, IDC predicts continued stable growth of the smartphone market through at least 2021, at a level of up to 4.5% in 2018. Improving economic conditions in many emerging markets, as well as sales of new Apple iPhone models, will help accelerate growth.

IDC forecast for the global smartphone market for the next 5 years

According to IDC forecast, by the end of 2017 the operating android system will be installed on 85.1% of all mobile gadgets in the world. By 2021, according to IDC, for the 1.5 billion Android smartphones sold, the average retail price will be only $198.

For iOS devices, this year marks the first time iPhone sales have declined, with growth forecast for all of 2017 not exceeding 3.8%. All signs point to end-2017 and all of 2018 to deliver strong sales volumes, IDC analysts say Apple smartphones because the community iPhone owners is already ripe for an update, and the company's next generation of smartphones is unlikely to disappoint them.

According to IDC analysts, the share of smartphones with a screen diagonal of less than 4 inches will practically disappear in the next couple of years, the share of smartphones with screens from 4 to 5 inches will decrease significantly.

IDC forecast for the global smartphone market, taking into account the diagonal of the screen

Models with diagonals from 5 to 6 inches will remain the most growing sector, and the share of phablets - models with a diagonal of more than 6 inches, will remain relatively stable.
