We considered the issue of updating the mobile operating system, but today we will touch on two generations of users: those who use iOS no jailbreak procedure and those who can't live without cydia store and we will try to solve the errors that occur during the update.

Note.If you are familiar with the update procedure, revision website I am sincerely glad for you and asks you to give the opportunity to use the manual to users who need it.

Before starting the update, I would like to make a little clarity for those who are faced with the need to update the i-device for the first time:

Update- the process of downloading and installing the latest version of the operating system with the preservation of all data.
Recovery– updating and resetting all settings to factory settings (the state of a new clean iOS device with the latest current firmware version).
Restoring from a copy- restore settings, download applications, notes and contacts to the state of the last backup created without changing the current firmware version.

Very often, due to inexperience, users using the store Cydia and all the advantages of a jailbreak, suddenly decide to give up the ability to install applications and tweaks from third-party stores, get on the right path and upgrade to a "clean" iOS. Easy update via Settings menu - General - Software update - Download and update after a few minutes, it can end with an eternal reboot. Don't rush, take your time!

Update device without jailbreak

Conditions: the device supports the latest current firmware, stable internet is connected, the jailbreak procedure has not been performed.

Follow all the steps consistently and the upgrade process will be "dry and comfortable".

Point 1. Pay attention to compatibility.

At the time of the update, make sure that your iOS device supports the latest current firmware version. You can always find out about compatibility on the official website of the company and this is the only reliable source. As for iOS 8, the following are compatible with it:

  • iPhone: 4S and newer;
  • iPad mini: all models; iPad: iPad 2 and later;
  • iPod: iPod Touch 5gen.

If all is well and your device is supported, go to paragraph 2.

Point 2. Update iTunes. We free up space.

Before any update, Apple strongly recommends updating to the latest version of the iTunes app. You can do this from the application itself ( iTunes - Updates), and downloading it again from the official site with a further replacement of the old version.

Before you start updating, make sure you have enough free space on your Mac or Windows computer. Its size depends on the size of the backup you plan to create. The required minimum is approx. 8-9 GB(106 apps on my iPhone pulled in 6GB). Make sure you have enough free memory on your iOS device as well. You can check the memory status by going to Settings - General - About this device.

In case your iPhone, iPad or iPod has less 400-500 MB, it is strongly recommended that you uninstall several applications or videos, increasing the amount of free space to at least 1.5 GB.

All these memory freeing operations will help to avoid problems and unexpected errors during the update.

Point 3. Backup and recharging.

Remember, always always back up your data! Whether you plan to update your iPhone or not, get in the habit of making periodic backups. This will save your nerves and a state of deep frustration when the iOS gadget refuses to load beyond the white apple.

Connect your iOS device to your computer, open the icon with its image and choose where exactly to create a copy. If in iCloud cloud storage you have enough remote disk space - feel free to create a copy into it. From time to time, I strongly recommend that you make new offline copies on your computer.

Selecting an item Create a copy now, decide whether you need copies of installed programs or you will start life from scratch. Backup size with applications can be much bigger than without it.

Depending on how loaded your iOS device is, it depends on how many cups of coffee you have to drink while passing the time. To kill two birds with one stone, create a backup both in iCloud and on a computer. It will take a little longer, but with further recovery, you can return the spent minutes of waiting.

Before proceeding with the key step - updating iOS, make sure that your gadget is charged more than 50% . This figure is rather symbolic and many experienced users are updated with 20-30%, but no one can predict how actively your device will eat up the battery during the update.

Item 4. Update.

This is where the paths of many users diverge. Someone prefers a more stable and reliable update "over the air" (during the first few hours after the release of a new firmware, this option is more preferable), someone is updated "over the air".

Each option has the right to life, and if all the above points are observed, there will be no problems during recovery.

For an over the air update, open Settings - General - Software Update and download the latest firmware version.

When updating using iTunes, just connect your iOS device and select Refresh.

Item 5. Restoring purchases and applications.

After a successful update, the iPhone will prompt you to select the system language and connect to a Wi-Fi network. The next item is data recovery.

If you have a good internet speed, you can recover data from iCloud copies. If not, choose a copy of iTunes. The second option is somewhat faster. The iOS device will immediately require a connection to iTunes, and the application itself will go into recovery mode.

By default, the most recent backup will be selected. Choose an item Restore and wait for the process to finish. Do not disconnect the cable until the application and data are fully transferred. Once the restore from backup is complete, the device will reboot and require you to sign in to your account Apple ID.

Sign in, select your email and phone number to use iMessage. You will be greeted by the familiar SpringBoard with native wallpapers and icon placement. Now the iOS device will download all the apps from the digital backup. Wait for the download to complete and the device is completely ready for use.

Jailbreak device update

For the opportunity to be different from everyone else: install tweaks and download free applications, you will need a small fee - a slightly different update procedure. However, it is not much more difficult.

Attention! If your iOS device has been jailbroken, do not update over the air or through a regular iTunes update. There is a high probability of getting an eternal reboot or a recovery loop.

Point 1. We prepare the iOS device.

For sure, after using a jailbroken iPhone or iPad, there are many several applications downloaded from alternative stores on the device. It is highly recommended to remove them.

For further operations, repeat all the operations listed in paragraphs 1 - 4. When creating a backup, be prepared for possible errors. All that remains for you is to kindly agree that iTunes cannot transfer the purchase, or purchase a paid version of the application (don't be cunning, because the jailbreak helped save a few tens of rubles :)

Point 2. Restore and update the device

So, the backup is created and it's time to "return everything as it was." We reset your smartphone to factory settings. Choose an item Restore iPhone. iTunes will require you to disable the feature Find iPhone. You can do this on an iOS device by opening Settings - iCloud - Find My iPhone and turn off use.

Apple will once again warn you about the possible loss of non-ported applications and offer you to download the latest version of the operating system. We agree and go for another cup of coffee.

After a successful update, Recovery purchases and downloading applications from a backup is carried out in exactly the same way as in the case of using a “clean” device without a jailbreak procedure.

If something went wrong

In the digital world, as in life, not everything goes smoothly and the way we want. If during the update your iPhone stopped pleasing the usual screen spring board, but displays a lone white apple on a black background, things are not going well. What to do in this case:

Option 1. Hold down the key power And Home. Keep holding for 10 Seconds. The device will reboot and you will have chances for a successful download.

Option 2. If option 1 didn’t help, I have to upset you - you got into the so-called recovery loop. You can get out of it, but this will require sacrifice - a complete loss of data and updating to the latest firmware version (however, if you dutifully performed Point 3- don't worry).

Removing a device from the recovery loop:

    1. Connect your iOS device to your computer with iTunes running.
    2. In iTunes, select Restore.
    3. Wait for the recovery to finish. When the iTunes icon appears, you will need to transfer the iPhone to DFU mode. The transition to DFU is carried out as follows:

What is good about Apple's operating systems is that they do not need to press extra buttons. If you always follow the instructions, the installation will proceed quietly and smoothly. The answer to the question: how much iOS 10 is updated depends on the Internet and the device of a particular user.

The average weight of the latest iOS versions is between 1.1 GB and 2 GB. To update the OS, you will need a little patience, one cup of tea, a couple of cookies and a 20-minute video from your favorite blogger on YouTube.

How many iOS 10 updates

Apple never delays the release of the system, in the Software Update it arrives very quickly. It is important to remember that data will only be downloaded when WiFi is on. Internet via cellular data will not work here. You need to free up a few gigabytes for the new iOS 10 and back up your data. File download time directly depends on the speed of your Internet. The average wait is about 10-15 minutes.

After downloading the files and confirming the system update, the installation process begins. The iPhone or iPad turns off, a luminous apple appears on the extinct screen and the download process in the form of a running scale. The iOS 10 update itself is taking a while about 20-25 minutes. The installation time directly through the device or iTunes is the same. The scale practically does not move in the first minutes. After everything is fully loaded, the device will re-start setting additional parameters.

After two steps, Apple's signature greeting will light up on your smartphone or tablet! New iOS 10 installed!

If there's one complaint that we constantly hear from Android users more than anyone else, it's the speed at which their device software is updated. Or no updates at all. This is especially cruel for enthusiasts who read about all the benefits of the new version of the OS, but cannot get it on their devices for six months or never at all. Even new devices are not usually sold with the latest version of Android. For example, Verizon's Galaxy Nexus received an update to 4.2 just recently.

This has been going on for many years now. But why the hell? Why hasn't this issue been fixed yet? And who is to blame for this? We have asked Android manufacturers, carriers and Google for comment. And here's what we found out.

What is included in the update?

When Google releases a new version of Android, there are essentially three steps that must be completed before the update arrives on your phone. First, chip makers must write code (drivers) to interact with the operating system and device hardware. Since there are many different chips in the Android ecosystem (Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Nvidia, Samsung, etc.), and each company uses different chips from manufacturers (for example, from Qualcomm - Snapdragon S3, S4, and S4 Pro), development for each one takes a certain amount of time. Usually drivers are written and tested within one or two months.

The device manufacturer then receives the software. Because each device is built with several different components, new software must be customized for each phone or tablet. In other words, Samsung can't just use its TouchWiz for all Jelly Bean devices. You need to write code for each device. In addition, each mobile operator has its own unique set of software requirements. It may include some required level of functionality or a specific application from the operator (*ahem-ahem* viruses *ahem-ahem*). This is all in addition to the fact that mobile phone manufacturers supply their devices each with their own shell. According to Samsung's Nick Di Carlo, it takes six to eight weeks on average after the company receives the software from Google. The fewer fixes in the new version of the OS, the faster the company completes work on it. Big update - the term of work is increased.

Manufacturers with their UI (shell, skin) take longer to update, which adds to the slowness for obvious reasons. After all, they are visually distinct and seem to be the only tangible difference from the Google Nexus, which usually launches with the latest version of Android. But most of the time, in fact, is working on software for hardware. “It's not as easy as if we didn't do any settings and just downloaded an update from Google. It won't work,” says HTC's Drew Bamford. “So even if we weren't working on the shell, I'm not sure the process would have been much faster.”

So the claim "Shells are the main cause of update delays" can be answered - "it's not."

Big delay

Welcome to the amazing world of mobile operator testing. Carriers must test not only every new phone they plan to sell, but every new software for every phone they already offer to customers. Simply put, they need to be sure that the phone will work exactly as advertised on their network. Is it difficult? Mind-blowing.

"They have limited resources: people, time, equipment," says Samsung's Di Carlo. “Tests in this area are very extensive as networks become more complex: multiband CDMA, GSM, LTE, now also VoLTE, which will be launched next year. In different parts of the network, the settings may vary slightly and they should check all this in different regions. So the complexity of testing is exceptional.”

Each operator has a separate command. They test everything from hardware tests to usability measurements. They receive software via an automated system to see if there are any slowdowns in some part of the network. When they finally issue a technical readiness certificate, they need to be sure that the device supports their standards. "We're trying to plan," says T-Mobile's Jason Young. "We're looking a year ahead and forecasting device acts 6 to 12 months in advance." When they expect a lot of updates for various devices, they ask the manufacturer: “Which device is your priority to enter the market?”. These priorities are a complex topic, according to Di Carlo: “If you are a carrier and you work in a lab supporting 30 or 40 phones at the same time - and from their point of view they support hundreds of phones from different manufacturers for two years when the contract is respected - will are they spending time on a new device that comes out in the fourth quarter, or will they be working on an OS update for already sold phones with a contract?

This is not an easy question. The operators' business, after all, is to keep you connected to their services. In case the devices are already on sale, it makes sense to focus on the most popular ones first in order to keep more people with the least amount of effort. It's simple economics: they make a lot of money from the customers they already have.

So, how long will all this take?

“I can tell you that when we release a new carrier product, we can be in the lab for over six months before the device goes on sale,” says HTC's Bamford. “It really takes a long time.” T-Mobile's Yang confirms that it typically takes three to six months for software to be tested before it can be made available to consumers. By simple addition, you can calculate that all these procedures can take as much as nine months, and this is only if both the manufacturer and the operator agree that the device needs to be updated to the next OS version.

But Apple does it much faster!

This is one of the greatest illusions in this techno game. Apple announces a new version of iOS and bam!, you can download it to your phone within 1-2 days. What is Apple doing to skip operator testing when everyone else is required to? Nothing, she passes it too. Apple has to go through all the same hurdles as Android manufacturers. The only difference is that Apple goes through them before announcing new software.

Sprint's Ryan Sullivan explains: "I don't think Apple is faster, I think it's just that it rolls out the update faster as soon as it announces it. This is largely due to the fact that they have complete control over their platform, but they have the same groups of people who are constantly working on the network integration of 250 carriers around the world. That is, when Google announces new software, it is only done at the platform level as a whole, only then they allow manufacturers to access the software, which the manufacturers then customize. It seems that Google's work on Android takes much longer. But it's not. Google is just only doing half the work on the software, and the vendors and operators do the rest of the work... I think the overall cycle from start to finish between iOS and Android is relatively similar. It just depends on when the new version of the platform was announced.”

Apple also has an advantage because it creates not only the OS, but also the devices themselves. The narrow range of device components used in its products speed up the process. For the same reason, Google's Nexus is the first to receive updates. Google is working closely with its device manufacturer of choice, speeding up getting a new version of Android to it, and then switching to carriers to make sure everything is tested and working as expected. This scheme only works at the start of sales, and then devices still receive updates from operators ( relevant for the US, but not for Russia; there are Nexus [and they are bought in Russia and the CIS], which are not locked under the operator and are updated by Google itself at the same high speed- approx. translator).

boogeyman

Many Android conspiracy theorists have come to believe that manufacturers and/or carriers are deliberately delaying software updates for older devices in order to sell new ones. Of course, not a single person with whom we spoke admitted this, despite our persuasion. But what is happening is really suggesting such thoughts.

Again, it all depends on resource priority. The manufacturer has many employees and must decide how best to use them. By putting them to work updating outdated devices, the manufacturer looks in the best light in front of consumers. But, of course, priority is given to new devices that are just planned to be released or work on which has just begun, because advertising money is already being spent. And when testing a network, operators should also determine their priorities, but different operators define them differently, depending on the current line of devices and their sales.

Motorola's Puneet Sony: "Some carriers are saying, 'This update is really important to us, so once you get it and give it to us, we'll send it to the lab and prioritize the resources to work on it.' But it's actually the third or fourth "priority" device in their lineup, so we still have to wait for them to test in the labs."

How can this be improved?

In fact, there are only two ways in which this situation could improve. Manufacturers can cut the number of devices they produce. At first glance, this sounds silly, but we see that this is already happening with Motorola and HTC. At some point, the market was so flooded with various Android devices that it lost all meaning. By merging their device profiles, HTC and Motorola are able to focus on the phones that really matter. Then, in theory, since they will have fewer devices, their resources will not be so widely distributed to upgrade obsolete devices. Fewer devices for operators can also speed up testing, although there will always be priority models that will be queued above others.

Automatic update function frees the user from having to search for updates on the Internet and worry about the possible absence of critical Windows updates on the computer.

Windows automatically keeps track of the latest updates for your computer. Depending on the Windows Update service settings you choose, Windows may install updates automatically or only notify you when they are available.

How long does it take to download automatic updates

It depends on the type of internet connection, size and number of updates required. Updates are automatically downloaded in the background while connected to the Internet and do not affect other updates. In the event that the connection is interrupted, the download will continue in the background the next time you connect to the Internet.

How Windows determines which updates are needed

The Windows Update service contains software tools that check information about the computer (model, version of Windows system) and other Microsoft software that is used on the computer. Microsoft uses this information to install only the updates that are needed for your computer.

When automatic updates are downloaded

Updates are downloaded in the background while connected to the Internet and do not affect other updates. If the Internet connection is interrupted before the download is complete, the process will continue the next time you connect.

When updates are installed

This depends on the automatic update options you choose. If you select the recommended options, updates are installed at 3:00 AM or on the schedule you set. If you turn off your computer earlier, you can install before shutting down.

During the scheduled installation time, if the computer is connected to a power source and put into a power-saving mode (sleep or standby), Windows wakes the computer for the time it takes to install new updates.

If the computer is running on batteries, Windows does not install all updates. However, Windows will attempt to install them during the next scheduled installation session.

Is it possible to choose automatic updates

Yes. You can choose to install only important updates or important and recommended updates. Optional updates are not automatically installed. You can choose to install them while browsing for available updates using the Windows Update service in Control Panel.

Despite the fact that Windows 10 has been on the market for quite some time, it is still considered a "young" operating system. Developers are working on its improvements every day to make the user experience more comfortable. All the changes made, no matter how useful they are, are carefully packaged and come to the computer in the form of constant updates, so it is so important to know what they contain and how to install them correctly.

Do I need to update Windows 10

The question of the need for Windows updates has always been acute, and for good reason. There is still no consensus, therefore, in order to decide whether to upgrade the system, it is necessary to consider all the arguments for and against.

Why You Shouldn't Update Windows 10

The meaning of updates for the Windows line of operating systems has always been in question.

If we talk about operating systems Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, then almost all updates did not bring anything new or made changes to functions that were unclaimed for ordinary users. With the release of Windows 10, this tradition has been partially preserved. Most updates to this OS add only new enterprise, server and other narrowly focused features, as well as fix old ones and add new minor bugs.

Windows 10 updates take a long time to install and require you to restart your computer. There would be nothing wrong with that if they came out less often than once every two weeks. For the most part, this frequency is to blame for Microsoft's corporate policy, thanks to which everything new is immediately packaged and sent to work without thorough verification and testing.

Windows 10 updates are installed for a very long time and at the most inopportune moment

Windows 10 doesn't ask users if they need an update or not, and installs everything automatically when the system reboots. This can come as a surprise to the user who decides to quickly restart the computer. Installing some Windows 10 updates can take up to two hours, depending on device specifications. In addition, downloading them can eat up all Internet traffic, and sometimes even computer resources.

Also in Windows 10 there is such a thing as advertising. And on free versions of the system, it is often accompanied by the forced installation of unpopular and low-quality software from Microsoft. Updates to advertising-related services are also part of the general Windows update list.

Why you need to update Windows 10

It is necessary to install the first update immediately after installing the system. The fact is that there are many more varieties of Windows 10 than it might seem at first glance.

First, a general non-personalized version of the system is installed. After installing drivers and updating for the first time, the OS is changed to the version that best matches the hardware configuration, which improves the overall performance of Windows 10 and its compatibility with the computer.

Now let's talk about the advantages of regularly updating Windows 10. Surely you have heard about the spy functions of this system. In many ways, these services work with a single goal: collecting and sending statistics to the technical support center. This allows developers to monitor the performance of Windows 10 on different computers and in different conditions in order to regularly improve the system by releasing updates. It is thanks to the active collection of information that some Windows 10 updates are really valuable and allow you to make the user experience more comfortable.

Separately, it should be said about the security update. Every second Windows 10 update brings an improvement in system protection against viruses and other external threats.

Taking into account the high activity of ransomware and cyberattacks in recent times, updating security systems is relevant. Even if your computer has a good antivirus that you completely trust, this does not provide guaranteed protection against threats aimed at the vulnerabilities of Windows itself.

Windows 10 General Update includes vulnerabilities and security updates

Windows 10 updates are especially important for owners of older hardware. After installing Windows 10, most drivers are downloaded automatically: this procedure often includes some compatibility improvements in order to further ensure the best performance of the computer. Unfortunately, the Microsoft database is far from complete, which especially affects the outdated hardware. But such information is collected very quickly, and the next update may come with a package designed exclusively for one of the computer components.

All kinds of Windows 10 updates and the misconceptions associated with them

By "updating the operating system" many users sometimes understand completely different things. To avoid confusion, for starters, it’s worth taking a closer look at a couple of points: what an update is, what it can be, and what it can’t.

The confusion about the types of updates is quite serious. It arose due to inaccurate translation of English words into Russian. For example, version - version, edition - version, build - version, and the like.

Table: what is called "Windows 10 Update"

Switching to Windows 10 (Version update)Also, this procedure is often referred to as "Upgrading to Windows 10" or "Updating Windows", which sounds very ambiguous. Moving to Windows 10 means upgrading from Windows 7 (or 8 or 8.1) to Windows 10. This is the only procedure that literally translates as "Upgrade Version".
Windows 10 also has an internal division into versions, for example, version 1607. Such versions are updated through Windows Update. In fact, this is an update of the assembly, which, for beauty, is called a version.
Upgrading to Windows 10 can be done through the Windows10Upgrade utility, which is described below.
Changing the edition / edition of Windows (Edition update)Microsoft also refers to this procedure as "Windows Update". Literally, it translates as "Updating the edition." An edition change includes, for example, an upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Professional or another "tariff change".
The article below explains how to do this.
Windows 10 build update (Build update)The correct name for this procedure is "Build Upgrade". However, when many users say "Update Windows 10", they mean it, so in the future we will refer to this procedure as such.
Updating a build means updating Windows 10. The main way is to automatically update Windows through the "Update Center". However, there are others, which will be discussed below.
Update additional Windows resources It refers to everything that is an important application to the system, but is not officially part of it. This includes security tools, features, some services, built-in programs, and more. When Windows 10 says it's being updated, most of the time it means updating resources. In Windows 10, it is almost inseparable from the build update, so it should be considered part of the Windows 10 Update.

What is meant by "Windows 10 Update"

Windows Update is responsible for updating the system in Windows 10. When it starts up, it automatically checks for new builds and additional resources, and if it does, it starts downloading and installing immediately. There are other ways to start the update, but the procedure itself is always the same.

"Windows 10 Update" is "Windows 10 Build Update" plus "Windows Additional Resources Update". This procedure is indivisible and the only possible option for updating your system.

Updating Windows 10 involves updating the operating system and some of its components

What methods of updating do not exist

Due to various misconceptions and user memory about Windows 7, it is very common to find mention of ways to update, which actually do not exist.

Selective update

Many users mistakenly believe that selective system updates are acceptable in Windows 10. Once upon a time, there was indeed information that Microsoft would make such an opportunity for owners of the release of Windows 10 Professional. However, this idea was not continued, and no choice is expected from users in the near future.

All updates for Windows 10 are downloaded as a single package, and it is impossible to separate what you need from everything else. There are also no special programs or utilities that allow you to implement this function. And although there are ways to update the system to a certain version, excluding subsequent ones, it will not work to choose what to install from this update and what not.

All updates for Windows 10 are packaged in one package that cannot be separated in any way.

Manual update

A manual Windows 10 update can be considered a synonym for a selective update: that's exactly what it means. Windows 10 only has automatic updates that you can start manually. It's just that it either starts by itself, or at the request of the user, and Windows 10 is always updated the same way.

A manual update can be called an offline update via an MSU file downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog

Game mode upgrade

Game mode is enabled in the settings:

  1. Click the Start button and click the gear icon to open Settings.

Click on the "Start" button and click on the gear to open "Settings"

  2. In the window that appears, click on "Games".

In the window that appears, click on "Games"

  3. On the left side of the window, click on "Game Mode" and activate the only switch.

On the left side of the window, click on "Game Mode" and activate the only switch

If you don’t have a game mode in your settings, just update the system using any of the suggested methods and try again.

Installing a specific update

It is recommended to download only the latest Windows 10 update, which is what the system itself does. Any update package installs completely and includes changes from all previous OS updates. You won't be able to skip any particular update.

Service packs include changes from all previous ones, unless they were excluded by newer ones. Also, if you experience problems after upgrading to the latest version, you can upgrade to any previous version. How to do this is described in the "Upgrading to a specific version" chapter. However, remember that any subsequent update of the system will bring back all the changes.

How much do updates weigh and how long does installation take

The Update Center downloads only the latest update, which is enough to keep the operating system up to date. Multiple packages are downloaded at the same time only if there is a change in the internal version of Windows 10. In this case, their weight is summed up. The updates themselves do not accumulate in any way, but simply replace each other. They are approximately 500 MB for x86 systems and 1 GB for x64 systems.

After applying the changes, the update package itself is deleted, but the amount of free space on the hard disk will change:

  • the size of the operating system can change within 1 GB up or down (the weight of the update itself does not affect this);
  • the update cache will remain on drive C, which by its weight is 50-80% of the update itself.

The update cache is designed to restore the system in case of failure. Usually it is deleted on its own after some time when there is not enough free disk space. The update cache is located at C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\. This is the only trace left. To remove it, you need to disable the "Update Center" and start the system in safe mode. How to do both is written in the chapter "How to stop updating Windows 10".

Deleting the update cache will not harm the system in any way

It is difficult to predict the time that the system will spend on updating, since it depends on the capabilities of the computer and the speed of the Internet. The update can take from 15 minutes to two hours.

If you run a check for updates yourself, the weight of the update will be shown before it starts downloading. If the system starts the process itself, and there is not enough space on the computer, it will notify the user about it. The table below shows the latest service pack sizes for all internal versions of Windows 10 that the system will boot.

How to update Windows 10

Usually, Windows 10 update starts without the knowledge of the user. Either the system receives a message about the appearance of something new, or it checks for updates on a timer on its own. If the information about the availability of updates is confirmed, their background download will begin, and the user will know about it only after the computer is rebooted.

However, you can also request to check for updates yourself.

Basic way

The easiest way to run a scan is through Windows Update, which is located in the Settings window.

  1. Click on the "Start" button and open "Settings" by clicking on the gear icon.

Click on the "Start" button and open "Settings" by clicking on the gear

  2. In the window that opens, click on "Update and security".

In the window that opens, click on "Update and Security"

  3. Click on the "Check for Updates" button.

Click on the "Check for Updates" button

Checking for updates can be disabled through various system settings. If this is the case, you will not be able to update in a general way. In this case, you should use the "Command line" to force the search for updates.

Through utilities

Windows 10 can also be updated through special programs designed just for this purpose.

The utilities will not provide special features. They do not contain updates themselves, but only redirect the system to the Microsoft server to search for them.

Both of the applications described below are located on the official Microsoft website in the "Software Downloads" section.

Utilities for updating Windows 10 can be downloaded from the official Microsoft website

Windows10Upgrade (+ upgrading to Windows 10)

Everything is even simpler here, since in the application itself you will have to press only one button, but it will be installed on your computer. It also allows you to upgrade to Windows 10 from version 8.1 and earlier.

Download the application from the official Microsoft website, run it as an administrator and click "Update Now".

Run Windows 10Upgrade as administrator and click "Upgrade Now"

Upgrading to a specific version

These methods can also be considered as updating without an internet connection. They differ from the previous ones in that now the search for the current version of Windows 10 will be carried out not on the Microsoft server, but on a Windows 10 image or a special file.

Via CAB or MSU file

CAB and MSU files are special Windows 10 updates that are designed to update systems that do not have access to the Internet. You can download them from the official Microsoft website. The update files should open like regular .exe files, but if this does not happen, they can be run through the "Command Prompt".

Run "Command Prompt" as an administrator and enter one of the following commands:

Changing the edition of Windows 10 (without reinstallation and data loss)

Changing the edition of Windows 10 is only possible for a more “expensive” version of the system. If you want, for example, to change from Enterprise to Professional, only a complete reinstallation of the system will help you: Enterprise is the most expensive edition. But from the Home version, the transition is more than possible.

  1. Click on the "Start" button and click on the gear to go to "Settings".

Click on the "Start" button and click on the gear to go to "Settings"

  2. In the window that opens, click on the "Update and security" section.

Click on the Update & Security section

  3. On the left side of the window, select "Activation" and click "Change Product Key".

Select the "Activation" tab and click "Change Product Key"

  4. Enter one of the following keys (the keys are conditional: they allow you to change the version, but do not activate it):
  5. If the update does not start automatically, select Windows Update on the left side of the window and click Check for Updates.

Select the "Winodws Update" tab and click "Check for Updates"

How to stop updating Windows 10

If you need to urgently interrupt a Windows 10 update that has begun, quickly disconnect your Internet connection. Now you need to run the “Command Prompt” as an administrator and enter the following commands in turn: net stop wuauserv, net stop bits and net stop dosvc.

Open the start menu, type "cmd" in the search box, right-click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator"

If you want to prevent updates from being downloaded, the easiest way to do this is through services.

  1. Open the Start menu, type "services.msc" and run the found utility.

    Go to "Options"

  2. Go to the Update & Security section.

Open the Update & Security section

  3. Expand the Troubleshooting tab and select your issue. The system will give you further instructions.

Expand the Troubleshooting tab and select your problem

Regular updating of Windows 10 is a useful thing, but not always convenient. Nevertheless, periodic updates for this system are almost a vital necessity. It’s better to endure an hourly system update once again than to try to deal with more serious computer problems later.
