Just as often phone models from the top lines of manufacturers are reviewed on our resource, we also often have to think about target audience– after all, the niche predicted by marketers will not always be ready to pay the final amount, with all the extras, offered in retail trade. In our country, operator subsidies for purchasing a phone with a contract have not yet been developed at all, and resellers, it must be said, care more about their wallets than about ours. Hence, end-user conversations about the advantages of this or that model usually end with the phrase - yes, but when it gets cheaper. What if we discuss models for young people, teenagers - people who usually do not have a permanent source of income, but mobile phone is not only a means of communication, but also a fashion accessory and a music player. Our review today will focus on just such a model - a new product from SonyEricsson, model W595, a compact slider phone from the Walkman line, combining an elegant design and music functions, equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth module and support for removable memory cards in M2 format. With all this, the device will cost about 300 euros, which, in our opinion, is not bad at all.

SonyEricsson W595:: Review:: Design and Features

Here we have a small slider phone in a pleasant blue color (officially called Active Blue) without an external antenna. The manufacturer loves the form factor and it must be said that it also copes with the performance. The device is not flashy, despite the obvious musical component of the line, although perhaps it is precisely the colors being tested, because the manufacturer also announced Cosmopolitan White, Jungle Gray, Ruby Black options; judging by the photos on the website, they have a less conservative appearance. The dimensions of the phone leave mixed feelings - on the one hand, it is small in thickness and overall dimensions when folded (47 x 100 x 14 mm), and on the other, considerable weight (104 g). Yes, you will be right if you say that it is not excessive, but in terms of appearance and during lengthy negotiations it makes itself felt.

W595 is made of plastic. The main color has already been mentioned, the soft-touch texture is pleasant to the touch and practical to use - the body is not easily soiled, except for the display, and the device does not slip in the hand. In addition, there are decorative silver lines along the perimeter - they are also plastic, but have a glossy texture.

The design of the new product can be assessed as “good”: although there are no gaps in the design, the gap between the halves is somewhat larger than expected, and the slider mechanism itself is a little tight. The ratio of the body halves can be estimated as 2 to 3, i.e. The sliding part is smaller, but this is a definite plus. Opening the slider is provided with one hand, and although you need to apply force at the beginning of the movement, then the closing mechanism will help you. The manufacturer has not equipped the phone with a special ledge for the thumb, but you can avoid the screen getting dirty when opening it by resting your finger on the side panel of the case, or on the smooth bevel of the lower part of the upper half.

On the front panel of the W595 there is a light sensor and a horizontal speaker slot, a display and control keys.

The display of the new product is a 2.2-inch TFT matrix with a resolution of 240x320 pixels (QVGA), capable of displaying up to 262K color shades. The picture quality is decent, the colors are pleasant, but the brightness is almost ideal.

The control block is a structure made from a joystick circle with 2 semicircles of context keys adjacent to it on the side. Joystick deflections are traditionally responsible for launching specified functions, and the central key for confirmation. The control arcs contained a context key, as well as the Activity Menu and Cansel keys (on the left and on the right, respectively). In the middle of the arcs there are buttons for accepting and rejecting calls.

In addition, taking into account the musical component of the device, the manufacturer immediately marked on the joystick the functions for which the joystick is responsible during operation music player: Play/Pause in the center and rewind and forward (left and right, respectively).

The block of alphanumeric buttons is located on the inner surface of the lower half of the case. As is customary with sliders, the control and number keys are located at different levels, but in the W595, due to the gentle bevel at the bottom of the sliding panel, this drawback is leveled out.

The block consists of 4 rows of 3 keys each, and if the rows are well spaced, then the keys in them practically touch with their side edges. The keys do not occupy the entire panel space, which is why their size can be classified as average. At the same time, they protrude slightly from the body and their movement is small, a little tight.

The backlight of the block is white, not entirely uniform (this also applies to brightness).

If you noticed, there is a small hole on the right, between the 2nd and 3rd lines. This is a microphone. Moreover, you can talk on the W595 even with the slider closed; for this purpose, a special groove is provided on the right side of the sliding panel.

Why is the microphone not located at the bottom of the body, you ask? The answer is obvious from the first minutes of using the device and can be clearly read from the photo - on the bottom, just like on the top of the case, there are external speaker consoles under a longitudinal metal mesh.

The side edges are slightly filled with functional elements: on the left, closer to the bottom edge, there is a proprietary Fast-Port interface connector. On the right we see a combined volume rocker and Walkman key (responsible for launching the player).

On the back of the device, functional elements are located on both sides of the central cover and the battery compartment cover. At the top we see the camera lens window, and at the bottom there is a slot for attaching a strap.

The mounting of the back cover is quite controversial - you don’t immediately understand how to remove it. On the right we see a small ledge that you need to grab with your fingernail and pull the lid up. The latter is secured by 9 protrusions - 3 on the bottom and 2 on the other sides. It is logical that with this arrangement on the body and the number of fasteners, there is no play in the structure.

The battery is provided with a special recess in the case, with protective protrusions in the upper part. When the battery is installed, it is not possible to remove the SIM card; the compartment is blocked. The SIM card compartment is recessed one third into the body and covered with a protective bracket. To the right of the compartment you can see the slot for an M2 memory card - a small recess and a fixing bracket at the level of the contacts. Those. The W595 allows for “hot swapping” of the removable memory card, but to perform this manipulation you need to remove the back cover.

SonyEricsson W595:: Review:: User interface

SonyEricsson W595 is built on the A200 platform, which is to be expected. The platform has managed to prove itself well and the manufacturer has no plans to move away from it yet. We turn on the phone and immediately get into the setup wizard, which allows you to set the language, current date and time, and copy numbers from the card to the phone’s memory. If you refuse, you can always find this function in the settings menu.

The desktop of the device is typical for the manufacturer's devices. The indicators are: reception level and battery charge in the upper part, the name of the operator’s network slightly lower in the center, and closer to the bottom, current date and time, as well as labels for contextual keys. The user is also free to choose the watch size from 2 options (large and small) in the settings menu.

The desktop picture can be a downloaded graphic file or a photograph taken by the camera of the device. There are only 2 design themes, but for some reason it seems to us that this will not cause any difficulties for the user - on the Internet you can find a sufficient number of themes for the A200 platform.

The W595 menu is selected from three views: a matrix of 12 icons (3x4), a carousel (circular scrolling) and one icon per screen with vertical scrolling of items. The icons are static and the minimal graphic effect is present only with the matrix display type - when you hover the cursor over a menu item, the icon increases in size. The menu sub-items are mostly text-based, made up of a vertical list of components with a small icon to the left of the name. For quick access The necessary sub-items are provided with digital key sequences, which the device processes quite quickly, which is good news.

Do not forget about the so-called Activity Menu - this menu is called special key applications located under the call button and provides access to the following functions: list of events (missed calls, SMS, etc.), running applications, links, and frequently used pages from the machine's Internet browser.

SonyEricsson W595:: Review:: Telephone service

By default, the call log, which can be accessed either through the menu or by pressing the call key, displays single list from the latest numbers, distinguished by the call type icon. In addition, bookmarks are located horizontally, through which you can go to separate lists of received, outgoing and missed calls. In addition to the name or number of the subscriber, the device will display the time and duration (if the call was made). In addition, the device provides a search function from dialed numbers, and not added to the telephone directory - when you dial the first digits, a list of matching numbers will be displayed on the display, from which you are asked to select. Call and traffic counters can be found in the settings menu - not always convenient, but according to the manufacturer, they are not so in demand that they need to be added to the “calls” sub-item.

The W595 can store up to 1000 subscribers in its memory. Namely subscribers, not numbers, i.e. provided that all fields are filled in (7000 numbers). The contact list is a monopolist and shows only entries in the device’s memory, completely ignoring the SIM card. It is not possible to force it to display both lists, although you can see these numbers through the functions menu.

For each subscriber you can set a large number of data such as:

  • First name (no last name)
  • 7 types of phones (mobile, mobile personal, mobile work, home, work, fax and other)
  • Webpage and email address
  • Your own ring tone, messages and picture
  • Mailing address
  • Place of work and position
  • A note and date of birth (which may be added to the organizer by default).
  • The device has user groups that you can define yourself. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to change the ring tone for them or add a call picture.

For frequently used numbers, keys 1-9 are provided; you can set up speed dialing on them. In addition, the user can create his own business card (v-card) and create special numbers (authorized, personal and emergency numbers call).

    SonyEricsson W595:: Review:: Messages

The messages menu contains access to sms, mms, e-mail and voice mail.

When creating a new message, the device will ask what type the user wants to create, and only then proceed to editing. The message form is simple and standard; regardless of the topic, it resembles a blank sheet of paper. To help the user there is a list of symbols, including emoticons, T9 dictionary and templates. In addition, during the process of editing sms, if you change the solution, you can go to mms from the same template.

Editing email similar to that on a PC: the “To” field, subject, text and attachments. Settings account takes a little time, although some fields could be configured automatically based on the information entered.

During testing, no problems or errors with encodings were recorded; the client is quite convenient and functional.

    SonyEricsson W595:: Review:: Organizer, office

The organizer is presented as a separate item in the menu and includes all the necessary options. The file manager provides access to all internal content of the device and memory card, contains data on cataloged files, such as:

  • Camera album
  • Sounds
  • Images
  • Web pages
  • Applications
  • Other
  • Taking into account installed games, applications and topics, there is about 26 MB of free memory left in the device (a total of 40 MB is stated). The W595 supports removable memory cards in M2 format and the kit already comes with a 2Gb module, which should be enough for a demanding user, even for the first time.

The device has as many as 5 alarm clocks. They are configured for both one-time and daily operation, taking into account the choice of days. We won’t judge why such a quantity is needed, but we won’t deny the sometimes need for several alarm clocks.

The call signal can be any melody contained in the device’s memory, and it can also be triggered when the device is turned off.

A calendar with the ability to display the month, week and specific day will allow you to set reminders about events. After you select the topic, type, start time, and duration, you can set the duration and date. In principle, nothing new, but the point is usually indispensable.

Tasks and notes are also important details of the organizer. Unlike the calendar, events included in these sub-items are not tied to specific date and are placed in a single vertical list, sorted alphabetically.

Timer and stopwatch are similar external design, but different in essence. The stopwatch supports up to 9 laps, and just like the timer, it can work in the background, which is quite convenient.

The calculator in the W595 is a somewhat expanded arithmometer, in which, in addition to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, it also calculates percentages.

A code memo will be useful to hide confidential information from prying eyes. At the first call, the application asks you to enter a 4-digit password and a security word, and only then proceed with filling.

    SonyEricsson W595:: Review:: Internet

The device has a standard browser from NetFront. The browser itself is quite convenient - it can scale HTML pages to fit the screen size, has a list of bookmarks, a log of visits, and the ability to save pages and individual pictures. Cookies, page caching and password saving are supported. The first link in the application contains access to Google, which often makes it easier to find the information you need.

    SonyEricsson W595:: Review:: Communications

The device operates in the following networks: GSM 850/900/1800/1900/UMTS 2100, supports EDGE and HSDPA.

The communication capabilities of the device are gathered in one item, hidden in the settings. Among them are Bluetooth, USB, synchronization and Internet options. Regarding Bluetooth version 2.0+ EDR, there are no complaints about the protocol and its implementation in the W595. During testing, the device was connected to a PC, PDA, BT headset and several smartphones. There are no complaints about the operation and data transfer, and no connection interruptions have been recorded. The A2DP profile was tested in conjunction with the Plantronics Pulsar 590E and worked quite correctly.

The supported Bluetooth profiles are as follows:

  • Handsfree
  • Headset
  • Dial-up Networking
  • File Transfer
  • Basic Imaging
  • Serial Port
  • Synchronization
  • SyncML OBEX binding
  • Generic Object Exchange
  • Generic Access
  • Object Push
  • JSR-82 Java API
  • Personal Area Networking
  • From the USB settings, we note the ability to set the device’s default function when connected to a PC: telephone, media file transfer, printing, file transfer, or selection each time you connect.

    SonyEricsson W595:: Review:: Camera

Based on the positioning of the W595, we can assume that it does not place much emphasis on the camera and this assumption is justified in practice. The 3.2-megapixel CMOS module without autofocus and flash shows modest performance. We launch the application from the main menu (there is no separate key for this manipulation) and during the startup screen we can press “0” to get a hint about function keys ah when working with the camera.

The application interface is convenient - the context keys are assigned the functions of setting and returning, and the central key is used to select the type of action (photo, video, viewing). In the lower left corner we see information about the current photo size settings and the remaining amount until the memory is full. It would not be amiss to note that the camera is supposed to be used when horizontal orientation device, the control keys are designed with this in mind. Both the central joystick key and the Walkman key can be used to release the shutter, and the volume/status rocker can be used to zoom.

Curious, but no longer new feature is a stitching of panoramas from 3 images.

    Settings include the following options:

  • Shooting mode (normal, panorama, frames, series)
  • Image size (3MP, 2MP, 1MP and VGA)
  • Night photography (enabled and disabled)
  • Self-timer (enabled and disabled)
  • White balance (automatic, clear, cloudy, fluorescent, incandescent)
  • Effects (off, black and white, negative, sepia, overexposure)
  • Quality (high or normal)
  • View (enabled and disabled)
  • Add a position
  • Save to (memory card or phone memory)
  • Auto rotate
  • Shutter sound (4 options and disabled)
  • Examples of pictures will clearly tell you about the camera, but I would like to note on my own that the camera is demanding of good lighting, is not friendly with macro and often produces movement when saving if you were unable to hold the device firmly in your hands after shooting.

    SonyEricsson W595:: Review:: Multimedia capabilities

The W595 multimedia browser is somewhat reminiscent of appearance interface used in Sony products, PSP and PS3 (XMB) and is now used in almost all new products. This is a vertical list cataloged by content type, offering access to photos, music, videos, games, RSS feeds and customization of display options.

The device's music player provides access to all audio content of the device. We can see sorted information by artists, albums, tracks, playlists, plus everything has access to audiobooks and podcasts.

The interface of the player itself is a display of the device divided into 2 almost equal parts, in the lower part of which, under the “progress bar”, data on the time is presented: total and remaining until the end of playback, and just below the information from the tag of the composition being played. Working in the background is possible, which is quite logical. To control the player's functions, the joystick is used, and the volume is controlled by the rocker on the right side of the device.

Among the player functions we note:

  • Shuffle playback order
  • Song repeat
  • Equalizer
  • Enhanced Stereo
  • Book or landscape orientation display
  • The quality of music playback in the W595 is at a decent level. The volume is sufficient, it was more than enough for most situations, including the subway, and if we talk about external speakers, they are beyond any praise.

The device's multimedia capabilities also include audio recording and entertainment applications VideoDJ, PhotoDJ and MusicDJ. In the first case, it is a simple-designed voice recorder, which, nevertheless, records information quite well without a time limit (except for free memory).

MusicDJ will allow you to create your own composition from a set of samples included in the kit. By changing and adding sound along 4 tracks, you can create a unique melody, which you can then save and use as a ringtone.

The TrackID application will allow you to record a few seconds of a song and get information about the album and artist of the song using an Internet connection.

The radio with the RDS function, included by the manufacturer in the main menu, works as one would expect when a headset is connected, acting as an antenna. Auto search and memory for 20 radio stations are supported.

SonyEricsson W595:: Review:: games and applications

The device has 4 games installed: Extreme Snowboarding, Guitar Rock Tour (guitar simulator), QuadraPop (a variation on the Tetris theme) and Racing FeverGT (auto racing). Not a lot, but not a little at first, given the presence of a Java machine and the ability to install new content.

Java machine test completed standard programs JBenchmark. The results can be seen in the table below, in our opinion they are quite good.

    Table "JAVA" SonyEricsson W595

Of the additional software included with the W595, there are quite a few useful and interesting applications installed, including:

The Google Maps service loads data from the Internet. When you first contact you, you will be asked to read license agreement, having accepted which you can continue working. The application displays both a map image and a satellite photo, to choose from, linking the current location to base station. Planning a route and traveling on a map is also possible, but Google itself does not recommend using the function as a car navigator.

Comeks strips is an application for creating a kind of collage from captured photos or uploaded pictures.

Coverter is a converter of quantities such as distance, volume, weight, temperature, speed, area and even tip calculation.

Music Mate 5 is an application that uses the accelerometer to play the musical instrument selected in the menu.

Music Quiz is a kind of “guess the melody”, which involves songs loaded into the device.

Rock Bobblehead is an incomprehensible program that allows you to shake the device to activate the figure depicted on the display, vaguely reminiscent of Elvis.

Walk Mate is a pedometer that uses accelerator functions.

YouTube – access to the popular video service directly from your mobile phone.

SonyEricsson W595:: Review:: Impressions and conclusions

On the manufacturer's website you can see the following battery life values for the W595: 9 hours of talk time and 385 hours of standby time. In practice, this data results in 2.5-3 days at an average load - use telephone functions, moderate messaging, activated Bluetooth, taking photos with the camera and listening to the player. Undoubtedly, you can get more operating time out of the device by reducing the load, however, when using the W595 as a player, the operating time will be significantly reduced.

The reception level of the new product is at a decent level - no communication failures were recorded during the week of use. The volume of the speaker is impressive, it has a considerable reserve, so in normal situations it had to be muted.

The calling speakers, of which there are 2 in the model, are extremely loud - the device could be heard in all situations, right up to the pocket of your bag. The vibration alert is not bad, but against the background of the speakers it can get no more than a four.

If the manufacturer set itself the task of creating a youth phone that included a large number of functions, but not at the expense of size and design, then in our opinion, he succeeded. The model is quite laconic, there are unlikely to be any obvious shortcomings in it, except for some shortcomings that we described in the review, but we do not rule out that this will be corrected in production samples.

On the eve of the New Year holidays, and after them Valentine's Day, Defender of the Fatherland Day and International Women's Day, you should take a close look at the W595 if you are not chasing technical innovations that you need more for image than for everyday use, and in phones you appreciate compactness and functionality.

    Positioning

There are no changes to this model in terms of positioning on the market, compared to its prototype in the face Sony Ericsson W580, did not suffer. The company expects an audience aged 15 to 24 years. At the same time, it is emphasized that the social component of the phone for such young people is more important than experiments in the field of design; the device must be calm. Based on this positioning, it becomes clear why the set included headphones with a second connector for an additional headset. You've probably seen young people in public transport listening to one player and sharing one pair of headphones. Each person gets one earphone. No quality, but listening to music together, read social role, completed. I’ll leave aside the reasoning that often a second pair of headphones will not be available, and the presence of a second connector is an opportunity to rarely give a chance to enjoy the same music at the same time. For example, a couple in love on a trip. A good decision, one can only praise it for it.

In the music slider segment, the situation has changed dramatically over the past year. If for Sony Ericsson W580 there were no direct competitors, then for the current model it is Nokia 5610 XpressMusic, which is positioned in exactly the same segment. The model came out earlier and has already dropped in price somewhat, which makes it attractive. Below we will compare these solutions, but for now we note that the presence of such a competitor makes the position of the Sony Ericsson W595 weaker. By playing in a small market niche, the company does not give an excessive advantage in anything to defeat a competitor, and the size of the niche increases slightly due to the presence of two models. Rather, we can talk about direct competition between these devices. As a result, the success of one means less sales of the other. A simple principle applies here: “Whoever gets up first gets the slippers.” It was in this vein that Nokia played, although the product from Sony Ericsson has a number of undeniable advantages that can sway young buyers in its direction.

    Design, dimensions, control elements

The model initially appears on the market in blue (Active Blue), later other colors will be available, for example, white (Cosmopolitan White), gray (Jungle Grey), black (Ruby Black), dark gray (Lava Black).

Especially for the Orange operator, the company is releasing a modification of this model with the s index - W595s. The device differs in color scheme, design of speaker grilles, and front panel. The menu appearance and pre-installed themes are also more consistent with the operator. There are no other major differences in the models.

Phone size - 100x47x14.1 mm, weight - 104 grams. It's average in size for the market, but the device feels pleasantly heavy; it doesn't have the lightness of plastic that was present in the Sony Ericsson W580; we can say that the device is more solid. The combination of materials is very ambiguous. Front panel made of matte plastic, inexpensive. Sides and rear end the device is velvety (soft touch). The chrome-plated rims are nice, how good they will be in use - it is unknown whether they are resistant to small objects and being carried in a pocket with other items. The device is tightly built, the automatic finishing mechanism is a little tight. The opening sound is not very melodic; the halves separate with a rustling sound.

The interface connector was placed on the left side of the device, on right side- double volume key, Walkman button. The speaker grids are visible at the ends. The camera is located on the back surface. There is a light indicator above the display. The hole for the strap is on the back surface of the device, which is somewhat unusual.

The microphone's location is unusual; when open, it can be seen to the right of the keyboard. There is a channel on the right side for talking on the phone when closed. My advice is to open the device on the street, otherwise your interlocutor will not always hear you well.

    Display

The display displays up to 262,000 colors with a resolution of 240x320 pixels (diagonal 2.2 inches, 34x46 mm, TFT). This allows you to display up to 9 lines of text and up to three service lines on the screen for most modes; for viewing Internet resources, when working with by email, with messages it is possible to display more lines due to smaller size font. The quality of the screen is excellent, the colors are vibrant, bright, and it behaves well in the sun. In terms of screen, this model is quite comparable to modern solutions, there are no downsides.

    Keyboard

The main problem with the W580 was the keys breaking off; the company used the wrong type of solvent. Numeric keypad W595 is similar to the previous one, these are thin plates on a substrate, they are figuredly cut. Whether there will be problems with them or not, only time will tell. Now it is impossible to judge this without actual use by various users, it depends on your luck.

The key travel is small and they are tight. Typing is not very pleasant, due to the short pressing stroke. The backlight is white, it is uneven, the left row is better illuminated.

The block of functional keys also does not have a good travel when pressed; the buttons here do not give a very pleasant impression to the touch; cheap plastic spoils the perception of the device. This is the most controversial point in the design. We saved a penny, but the impression was ruined.

    Battery

Back cover has no play and is easy to open. Inside there is a lithium-polymer battery, its capacity is 950 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the device's operating time in standby mode is up to 385 hours, in talk mode – up to 9 hours. Under Moscow network conditions, the device worked on average for two and a half days under moderate load (up to an hour of calls, about 30 minutes of games, 20 minutes of browser use). Huge pressure means that you will have to recharge the device daily. At the same time, a very small number of conversations means that the phone can last up to 3-4 days, but this is an unlikely scenario. In European networks, the operating time will be at least twice as long in all modes, due to better network coverage. Music playback time is up to 24 hours.

    Data transfer

When connecting via USB, you are forced to choose whether you will access files on the memory card, this is a data transfer mode, or you will continue to work with the phone, or the Print mode will be turned on (printing photos). In the first case, the phone turns off, you see the memory card and phone memory. Despite the stated USB support 2.0, data transfer speed does not exceed 500 Kb/s. In the second case there are various settings USB for accessing the network, the phone acts as a modem.

    Bluetooth

Bluetooth in this model is version 2 and supports EDR; you can set an increased energy saving mode in the menu. The A2DP profile is also supported, which allows the use of wireless stereo headphones. The model supports the following profiles:

    • Basic Imaging Profile
    • Basic Printing Profile
    • Dial-Up Networking Profile
    • File Transfer Profile
    • Generic Access Profile
    • Generic Object Exchange Profile
    • Handsfree Profile
    • Headset Profile
    • JSR-82 Java API
    • Object Push Profile
    • Personal Area Network Profile
    • Serial Port Profile
    • Service Discovery Application Profile
    • Synchronization Profile
    • SyncML OBEX binding

    Memory, memory cards

The phone has about 40 MB of memory, accessible to the user, the kit also includes a 2 GB M2 card. Hot-swappable memory cards are supported, the maximum card capacity is 16 GB.

    Performance

Typical performance for latest generation The company's devices are positively different from most models on the market. There are no restrictions on the size of the JAR file, the HEAP size is from 512 KB to 1.5 MB.

    Camera

The phone has a 3.2 megapixel camera, CMOS matrix. No autofocus. The device supports four possible resolutions - 2048x1536, 1632x1224, 1280x960, 640x480 pixels. There are two types of image compression – Normal, Fine. Most of the photos in the examples are shown in Fine quality. The camera interface is horizontal, there is no side button, it is the OK button.

The camera settings look like this:

    • Shutter sound. Select one of four shutter sounds, you can turn off the sound.
    • White balance. Choice between automatic mode, as well as Incandescent, Fluorescent, Daylight, Cloudy.
    • Effects. You can apply several effects to pictures, namely: Negative, Sepia, Black & White.
    • Timer– activated for a certain time to take pictures of your loved one.
    • Night mode Designed for shooting at night or in low light conditions. Noise in photographs increases, shutter speed increases (you cannot move the camera, otherwise you will get a blurry photo).
    • Shooting mode. Normal mode is receiving regular photos. Burst mode (Burst 4) – taking 4 pictures at once, a series. Panorama – taking panoramic images, a very interesting mode that allows you to take unusual photos. The last mode is taking pictures using frames; the resolution of the photo is automatically reduced.

In shooting mode, the phone screen plays the role of a viewfinder, the movement of the image on the screen is smooth, everything is visible very well. Using the number keys you can quickly switch various functions and shooting parameters, this significantly speeds up working with the camera.

New camera features include adding position, that is, information about the location where the photo was taken. This feature can be disabled from the camera menu. Without a built-in GPS receiver this function not so pleasant, interesting.

    Video

Video can be recorded in two resolutions (320x240, 176x144), file format is 3GP. The duration of the videos can be specified as limited (up to 10 seconds) or unlimited. The quality of the videos is average and not amazing.

    Pre-installed programs, games, themes

It makes no sense to consider in detail all the features of the software; this is the A200 platform, which is perfectly described in a separate material; here we will focus on the features of this device.

The device has 5 different design themes, all of them use flash animation to one degree or another, and can change the appearance of the main menu, for example, to a cyclical one or to a more familiar matrix one. The topics look interesting. The main menu can be made cyclical, circular, or display one icon at a time.

The phone has four games, one – Extreme Air Snowboard – is a good emulator. The second game Racer Fever GT is a regular racing game. QuadraPop needs no description, last game Guitar Rock Tour. It's funny, but this particular game will be pre-installed on the Nokia 5800 in a number of markets. Fun intersection.

Applications are represented by several programs. One of them - Comeks Strips - allows you to create a kind of comics from your photos, which will be interesting for young people. The second program is World Clock 3D, viewing the time in various cities around the world. Finally, latest program– Rock Bobblehead. It demonstrates a rock singer who can be controlled by tilting the phone in different directions. Someone rightly noted that the program has no practical meaning. If you look at it head-on, then everything is correct. But don’t forget that any program can be installed on this phone as a screen saver, and then the meaning immediately appears. In particular, a screensaver in the form of time in different capitals of the world, which replace each other on the screen, or a rock singer that you can control. It's nice.

Walk Mate is an application for counting the number of steps you have taken during the day, week.

Converter – converts one quantity into another.

Music Mate 5 - allows you to play various instruments of your choice by tilting the phone in different directions. I have met virtuosos who are able to “play” complex melodies in this way.

YouTube - access to mobile version service. You can watch videos in full screen and search. View rating. The quality leaves much to be desired in most cases; in the absence of WiFi, data transmission takes a significant toll on your pocket, unless you have unlimited Internet on the phone.

    Musical Features

The third version of the player, which is the most complex on the market today, unlike previous models, a new representation of equalizers has been added, more convenient and simpler. Otherwise, the device has all the characteristics of the Sony Ericsson W910i.

SensMe. In addition to the standard set of functions of the third version of the Walkman, the Sony Ericsson W595 also has the SensMe option. This is a playlist that includes various songs and distributes them by type (playback speed, mood). You are not required to add tags to the songs; Sony Media Manager serves this purpose; it analyzes all the melodies on the computer and adds necessary information. Another thing is that such a process takes time. For example, analyzing approximately 1.5 GB of music in our case took about 20-25 minutes. The advantage of Media Manager is that it can work with memory cards; there is no need to connect the phone itself. The program can also convert photos and videos for the phone; its capabilities are quite wide.

Is the SensMe feature interesting? Undoubtedly. On the melodies map you see the location of each track as dots, you can move between them, and at the same time a certain point is highlighted and it starts playing. However, the sight hits several points at once, they are also melodies. By clicking on enter, you can create a playlist with melodies that are similar in mood, playback speed, and so on. Under certain moods in life it is very pleasant.

However, you need to understand that the function will work well only if you listen to music of various genres, and there is a lot of it on your phone. If you add a couple of albums from the same artist, you will most likely see that they are all in one part of the map. The meaning of the function is lost. It also makes sense to use cards with a capacity of 2 GB or higher. Only at this volume will such playlists become diverse and will delight you.

Shake Control. Used full version control the player by shaking. It happens very simply. You press and hold the Walkman button, and then shake the device; when moving forward, it jumps to the next song, and back, respectively, to the previous one. Just shaking - randomly choosing a composition. When performing an action there is Feedback, the device vibrates. A new feature of this model is the ability to adjust the sound volume; you need to rock the device up to raise it, or down to lower it.

You shouldn’t assume that the function will find widespread use. It will be of interest only to those who are involved in running, other sports and want to be able to quickly change the composition. Young people may be interested in trying it in action and that’s all. It’s more convenient to connect the remote control and use it to control playback.

Among the new filters, it is worth noting the “time machine”; it plays songs for a certain year. Among the more traditional ones, there is a list of the most played and least played.

The two speakers in this device are loud. They are well spaced at the ends and really provide good, clean sound. For young people, this can be a very strong argument in favor of this device.

general description Walkman 3.0. Of the fundamental differences from previous version Walkman 2.0 can be noted for DRM 2.0 support, as well as MTP support, which allows you to directly transfer songs from Windows Media Player.

The device finds all files and directories on the memory card, extracts information from metadata (ID3 tags). Supported audio file formats are MP3, AAC, AAC+, E-AAC+, WAV, WMA and m4a. There are no bitrate restrictions for MP3 files; you can also download files from VBR. The company recommends using files with a bitrate of 192 Kbps.

In the music library, all saved music is divided according to several criteria:

    • Performers– a list of performers is provided in alphabetical order, valid quick search by artist name.
    • Albums– sorting by album name, search also works.
    • Posts– a general list of all melodies, sorted by song title or, if it is not in the metadata, by file name.
    • Genre– this is sorting by type of music direction, for example, Hip Hop, Jazz, Blues and so on.
    • My playlists– playlists created by the user, they can be created both in the device itself and on the computer when viewing the contents of the memory in USB mode Mass Storage, when updating the library, the device also finds them.

Unlike the second version, all transitions are made, although horizontal, but externally they are designed somewhat differently. This does not cause any difficulties. All navigation is carried out in a few touches, and in each list there is a search by several letters.

The mode of repeat playback of one or all songs, random playback is available. Rewind is progressive; holding down the key changes the rewind step. In the standard, basic player, you cannot select visualization, that is, animation in place of the album image. Only the image associated with the album.

If you have music playing and you are in standby mode, then launching the Media section will immediately lead to the player item.

The quality of music playback has not changed in any way, everything is exactly the same as on previous models. The equalizer is seven-band, you can set your own settings and enable stereo expansion. Equalizer settings are now available only when headphones are connected; pictures set for default equalizers are clearly displayed.

TrackID is present as a standard option, there is a built-in FM radio with RDS support (for detailed description should go to the description of the A200 platform).

Playback quality. The included headphones have good quality music playback. The model, in my opinion, is no worse or better than other members of the Walkman family. There is volume control in 15 positions, which is quite enough. The device plays loudly, subjectively the model seemed better to me than the same Sony Ericsson W910i, the difference is noticeable, and it is for the better.

It clearly follows from the table that new model, having retained the cost of the previous solution at the time of release, wins in all respects, with the exception that the memory card slot has been moved under the battery compartment cover, and there are no side light indicators. In all other aspects, the new product is significantly superior to its predecessor. Unfortunately, the company abandoned the sports app, it is being replaced by WalkMate, the program simply counts the number of your steps. It's not as interesting as the previous solution. But the quantity additional programs the W595 has much more, this solution is more interesting.

    Comparison with Nokia 5610 XpressMusic

These two models are direct competitors with all the ensuing consequences. At the time of the Sony Ericsson W595's appearance, the cost of the device from Nokia had already decreased, and accordingly, it looks a little more attractive. But is it really that simple? Let's take a look at comparison table characteristics.

Sony Ericsson W595 Nokia 5610 XpressMusic
    Size, Weight (mm, grams) 100x47x14.1, 104 98.5x48.5x17, 111

Not twins, but very similar solutions. In both cases, there is no 3.5 mm jack on the case; you must use a cable from the headset. The sound quality is better in the Nokia 5610, while the player is richer in functionality in the W595. The advantages of the device from Sony Ericsson include a built-in motion sensor and the screen rotates depending on how you hold it. In a word, in terms of functionality music player the device wins by a significant margin. A serious plus is the good stereo speakers; they are very loud and sound good.

Recording in VGA resolution, a flash for the camera, plus front camera This is not possible in a Nokia product; these are secondary functions for the majority. At the same time, the difference in the cost of the two solutions is minimal. The scope of delivery is comparable; Sony Ericsson wins, since the card is larger in volume.

A difficult question is what to choose for the buyer. The product from Sony Ericsson has novelty, a greater number of functions and an adequate price for its segment. Considering that the Nokia 5610 model will be on the market for about six months, the Sony Ericsson W595's win can be considered obvious. The release of the same solution from Nokia is planned only for the second quarter of 2009. Accordingly, until this moment the Nokia 5610 remains in the niche between the Sony Ericsson W580 and the Sony Ericsson W595, remaining exactly in the middle. While it outperforms the younger model in a number of ways, it loses to the older one. In my opinion, the choice is obvious.

    Impression

The model did not present any surprises, a moderately strong, well-perceptible vibration alert, a very loud call signal, this is what distinguishes the device. Good quality communication, the disadvantages include the need to open the device on a noisy street, the microphone can blow out, but the minus is nominal and that’s all.

In October, the cost of the phone will be 320-340 Euros (in Russia this is about 11-12 thousand rubles). Compared to the younger model, which is not being discontinued, the device will look good, attract attention with its novelty, minimal difference in price, but greater functionality. The solution turned out to be interesting, especially given the lack of a large number of similar models in the slider form factor. The first deliveries will include blue and white flowers(Active Blue, Cosmopolitan White). This model turned out to be one of the few that is well balanced in price, in the line from Sony Ericsson, with a good price/quality ratio. If you are looking at sliders for a child, or you are a little old, then this is a good choice.
