YouTube TV Analyst. "YouTube Analytics" section in the classic version of Creative Studio

Video analytics is a system of program logic based primarily on video analysis, which allows you to highlight the most important points in the behavior of people or other controlled objects.

Basic principles underlying analytical algorithms:

1. A person cannot cover all the information.

2. A person will never be able to foresee all problem situations.

3. A person will make a mistake anyway.

It must be clearly distinguished that special lab video analytics is not based on object detector , as is done by the vast majority of firms, but only uses Object Detector as a composite, and, moreover, not the most significant element, of which there are a lot in the system.

The highest degree of practicality is built on VIDEOSEMANTICS.

Video Analytics "Attention!" built on a self-learning architecture, which, based on previous behavior statistics, determines what is new, unusual, special, unusual in the actions of controlled objects.

As a rule, all criminal phenomena are committed in a non-standard way, because. require special movements, unusual trajectories of movement, specific sequences. They are most often accompanied by psycho-emotional arousal, which makes them perform non-standard actions. All this, as well as any new changes in the frame, finds the video analyst "Attention!".

"Attention!" is required not only to search for crime, but also allows you to find other important moments in the life of an enterprise, home or street area. Among other things, video analytics makes it possible to very quickly view large volumes of recordings, highlighting only noteworthy moments in them. Hundreds of hours easily fit into a few minutes of analytical frames.

Video analytics in traffic control

Video analytics also occupies a worthy place in the control of traffic, the detection of accidents, traffic violations, the protection and search for vehicles.

Video analytics "Attention!" - it's just a convenience, not a panacea for all ills. Instead of constant and every second monitoring of the mass of monitors, she suggests only occasionally paying attention to the indicated points, which, moreover, go sequentially on one monitor, moreover, only on its 1/10th part. And besides, they do not disappear from the screen for a long time, making it possible to be distracted, go to the toilet or watch a beautiful goal of a football match.

This is an effective tool to combat human factors problems. The last sentence should be taken literally, we are leveling the human factor, and not creating miracles of artificial intelligence. From difference between video semantics and classical video analytics: or .

What is video surveillance really?

Often there is a substitution of concepts: video surveillance, alarm, security ... Various smart people are trying to replace them with video analytics. This word has not even been introduced into the official dictionary yet, it is not yet in other languages of the world, the technology has not yet been officially recognized by anyone, but we already want to replace all technical security equipment with it. And the problem is not in the quality of the technology, but in the sense in general. Why remove, cancel, replace video surveillance? It needs to be improved, and not converted into smoke detectors, motion sensors, activity sensors and other things that are not characteristic of video surveillance. In addition, such sensors themselves, which have existed for a long time, cost an order of magnitude less than video cameras with video channels, and they can work in complete darkness.

What exactly is video surveillance? These are the eyes of a man in the distance. And don't dust them. The main thing in the process of video surveillance is a person. If we throw it away, then there is no video surveillance. Video surveillance is like a person is in a place where there is a camera, and sees everything that happens. Let through the slumber, but he sees. Given its selectivity, it does not react to interference such as swaying branches, birds, etc., and is also able to assess the adequacy of passing people to an object at a glance (albeit not always).

So let's leave these functions for video surveillance, we will not replace them with anything, we will only make it so that a person can comfortably feel his simultaneous presence in hundreds of places at once of a large number of video cameras. In addition, he could watch TV or even sleep, if he really wanted to, and generally experience as little discomfort as possible. We will still not be able to break human physiology, our task is to adapt to it, to ensure the safety of the object in the conditions of the attention that Mr. Man is ready to pay. Accordingly, it makes no sense to drive an endless stream of video channels, messages, warnings - no one will perceive them, simply because it is tiring. The task of video analytics is to find a comfortable connection between a video surveillance system and a person.

Video analytics- this is a kind of air conditioner for the brains of the operator, do not confuse it with the brains themselves.

We are not fighting criminals, everything has already been invented to fight them. To see everything around, there is video surveillance. To protect the buildings, there is a burglar alarm. To counteract the attack, there are guards and police. We are fighting the inattention of the operator, the carelessness of the owner, the drowsiness of the guard, ... - we are fighting the human factor!

Video analytics (video analytics)- hardware and software or technology that uses computer vision methods for automated data collection based on the analysis of streaming video (video analysis). Video analytics relies on image processing and pattern recognition algorithms that allow you to analyze video without direct human intervention. Video analytics is used as part of intelligent systems video surveillance (CCTV, CCTV), business management (business intelligence, BI) and video search.

Video analytics features.

Depending on the goals, video analytics can implement one or several basic functions:

Object detection As a rule, detection of objects in the field of view of the camera is carried out using video motion detectors. The main difference between video analytics and IR motion sensors is the possibility of localization (selection) and independent analysis of several objects at once. If movement is not a sufficient sign to localize an object in a frame, then detection can be performed using templates. For example, the detection of people's faces, car license plates or the detection of sedentary marine targets.

Object tracking. Tracking (tracking) algorithms make it possible to obtain a particular trajectory of an object's movement both in the field of view of one camera, and a generalized trajectory based on data from several cameras at once. Tracking is necessary to analyze the behavior of an object along its trajectory, for example, to determine the movement of a person against the flow or movement at an increased speed. In addition, tracking is necessary to prevent repeated triggering of video analytics systems on the same objects. Professional systems work according to the rule "one disturbing object - one actuation" to achieve high operator productivity.

Object classification. Some video analytics systems classify objects to filter live notifications or search results. For example, a typical object classifier, using shape features and absolute sizes, distributes objects into groups: a person, a group of people, a vehicle. More complex classifiers in video analytics systems can determine the gender or return group of a person.

Object identification. Object identification is the most complex component of video analytics systems. Modern systems allow you to identify people by biometric features of the face or vehicles - by license plates. Identification can be done using additional funds beyond video analytics: based on fingerprint, bank card, ticket, pass or mobile device ID.

Detection (recognition) of situations. Video analytics allows not only to select objects from streaming video, but also to recognize alarming situations based on behavior analysis this object, which does not allow to do a conventional video surveillance system. Also, situational video analytics can automatically detect the crossing of a signal line, falling people, forbidden parking, and fires.

The results of video analytics work are events (messages) that can be transmitted to the operator of the video surveillance system or recorded in the video archive for subsequent retrieval. In addition, video analytics generates metadata, i.e. data structures that describe the content of each frame of a video sequence. Metadata contains such information as the location and identifiers of objects (usually in the form of an alarm frame), the trajectory and speed of the movement of objects, data on the separation or merging of objects, data on the occurrence and end of an alarm situation. Metadata is written to the video archive and played along with the video.

Basic types of video analytics.

In terms of application, the following types of video analytics are distinguished:

Perimeter video analytics(perimeter video analytics) is used to protect extended areas and perimeters, intrusion detection and crossing the signal line in the "sterile zone". A feature of perimeter video analytics is relatively rare violations (therefore, the zone is called “sterile”), but the shape and type of the object cannot be clearly defined, for example, a person can crawl or ride a bicycle.

Situational video analytics(situation video analytics) is used to recognize alarming situations related to the behavior of people or the movement of vehicles. Situational video analytics can work based on rules set by the user (for example, prohibited parking in a given area), or based on accumulated statistics (for example, detection in the park twice as many people as usual at this time of day and on this day of the week).

Biometric video analytics(biometrical video analytics) is used to identify and track faces by biometric features of the face. Classical biometrics uses "black" and "white" lists to compare images of people. Biometric video analytics can handle more complex scenarios, such as profiling people or correlating observations from multiple cameras in a wide area surveillance network.

Number video analytics(number plate reading) is used to recognize license plates of cars, as well as to analyze their movement according to multiple cameras.

Multi-camera video analytics(multiple camera tracking video analytics) is used to track objects using multiple cameras. The result of the work of multi-camera video analytics is the trajectory of the object on the plan of the entire observation area.

Architecture of the video analytics system.

From the point of view of hardware and software architecture, the following types of video analytics systems are distinguished:

Server video analytics (server video analytics) involves centralized processing of video data on the server. Typically, a server analyzes video streams from multiple cameras or encoders on a central processing unit (CPU) or GPU(GPU). The main advantage of server-side video analytics is the ability to combine video analytics algorithms on a single hardware platform. The main drawback of server-side video analytics is the need for continuous video transmission from the video data source to the server, which creates a load on communication channels.

Embedded video analytics (edge video analytics) implemented directly in the source of video data, that is, in the cameras in the encoders. Embedded video analytics runs on a dedicated processor (DSP, ASIC, FPGA, ARM or x86 architecture) of the device and transmits the results (metadata) along with the video stream. The main advantage of embedded video analytics is to reduce the load on communication channels and on the video data processing server. If there are no objects or events, the video is not transmitted and does not load communication channels, and the processing server does not decode the compressed video for video analysis and indexing. Compared to server-based video analytics, embedded video analytics allows you to increase the efficiency of using communication channels and servers by 10-100 times.

Distributed video analytics is a hybrid solution between server-side and embedded video analytics, in which processing is distributed between the video source and the central equipment. For example, in multi-camera tracking systems, object detection is performed in the video data source, and comparison of results between multiple sources is performed on the server.

Ways to identify alarm situations.

There are the following ways to set up video analytics for automatic recognition of alarm situations:

Rule-based video analytics(rule-based video analytics) is the most common type of video analytics, in which the user defines in advance the rules that determine the alarm events. For example, the user can define a restricted area where people are not allowed or a restricted area for parking cars.

Video analytics based on statistical learning(statistical learning video analytics) accumulates statistical data about the behavior of objects and generates an alarm in case of non-standard behavior.

General benefits of video analytics.

The main advantage of video analytics over conventional video surveillance systems is the automatic extraction of metadata from the video data stream without the participation of an operator. The resulting metadata can be used to quick search in the video archive, sending alarm notifications and collecting statistics.

Compared to "manual video surveillance", video analytics can reduce the cost of video monitoring and the human factor in terms of detection and response time. Since a significant part of video data (more than 99%) in video surveillance systems is of no interest to users, video analytics can dramatically reduce the load on communication channels and the archiving system by filtering out unnecessary video data.

existing problems.

The main problem of many implementations of video analytics is high frequency false positives, which quickly reduces the economic impact of the technology. The problem is gradually being solved by improving video analysis algorithms, automatic testing on special test benches and ranking events by importance.

Another problem is the significant cost of system integration and implementation of video analytics. The role of this factor is reduced due to the emergence of open standards, such as ONVIF, simplification of calibration procedures and video analytics settings.

International standards.

Intelligent video surveillance in general and video analytics in particular are at an early stage of standardization. The following international organizations develop data and control interfaces for video analytics systems:

ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) brings together about 500 manufacturers and has strong positions in Russia, Europe and Japan. Describes the interaction interfaces between IP cameras, video analytics servers, video recorders, access control systems (ACS) and other components. A distinctive feature of ONVIF is the use of the SOAP protocol for interaction between security system components.

PSIA (Physical Security Interoperability Alliance) brings together about 65 manufacturers and has a strong presence in North America. A distinctive feature of PSIA is the use of the POST protocol. Compared to ONVIF, the PSIA interface is easier to implement, but less flexible and scalable.

CAP (Common Alerting Protocol) is an alarm messaging protocol. Unlike ONVIF and PSIA, the CAP interface is not specialized for video surveillance and video analytics.

Areas of application of video analytics.

The economic effect of the introduction of video analytics is more noticeable in large geographically distributed video surveillance networks. As technology becomes cheaper, video analytics becomes attractive to households and small businesses.

  • How to build a promotion strategy if specific measurable goals are not set?
  • How to objectively assess the quality of content when there is no competitor analysis?
  • How to analyze the effectiveness of advertising without dynamics by key indicators?

Introductory: indicators of the quality of video content and the effectiveness of promotion on YouTube

Keep in mind: you cannot focus on only one well-known and popular indicator. Such complex processes as business promotion, channel monetization, video ranking depend on many factors. It is important to look in dynamics and, if possible, in comparison with competitors for the whole range of metrics.

Number of views and viewing time

Previously, certain video views/general channel views were a measure of success: everyone was trying to get them in any way, including cheating. Now doing this is not only harmful, but also pointless. Watch time and engagement rule the show, not the number of videos watched.

That is, it doesn’t matter how many times you watched the video - what matters is how long they did it. For example, 1 view of 10 minutes will be more valuable for the platform than 10 views of 30 seconds.

Watch time is one of the main ranking factors, this is written in the YouTube help

True, there is often a good correlation between these indicators, this is noticeable in YouTube Analytics reports (more on the tool in the next section).

Subscribers, Unique Viewers, Reach

The normal development of the channel is accompanied by a uniform growth of subscribers. Sharp jumps up can indicate successful advertising / PR moves or cheating, and a wave of unsubscribes can indicate problems with reputation, the release of low-quality content.

At the same time, the number of subscribers is almost always different from the number of viewers. Some of the followers will not notice your new videos, but they will also attract a completely new audience: from recommendations, search and external resources.

In addition to unique viewers and subscribers, it's also useful to look at reach (total impressions) and badge CTR (impression-to-view conversion).

The higher the number, the better:

  • The growth of subscribers indicates that you are releasing quality content.
  • Viewer count shows how many people are watching your videos.
  • Reach shows how many times your videos were shown in search, in recommendations, in feeds.

Geography and age of the audience

It is important not only how they look, but also who looks. Advertisers are willing to pay more for views from Moscow than for views from the regions. By the same principle - users in Europe or the United States are more expensive than the audience of the CIS.

Engagement (likes/dislikes, comments, shares)

Engagement (ER) measures how viewers react to a video. According to a Backlinko study, social reactions - likes, shares, comments - have a positive effect on video ratings.

High natural engagement is a powerful signal for businesses and bloggers who want to buy direct ads on the channel.

By the way, dislikes are not bad, the same involvement. This is a good sign for YouTube that the video is not indifferent to the audience, it evokes emotions. You can go to the "Trends" and find that the "trucks" of dislikes do not interfere with the videos at all.

An example of a video with a large number of dislikes, which, despite this, fell into YouTube trends

The number of videos and the regularity of their release

The number of videos, the frequency and regularity of their publication is an indirect but significant indicator.

Firstly, without a sufficient number of videos, it is hardly possible to fulfill the conditions for channel monetization / participation in an advertising exchange or advertising network. Secondly, subscribers will not be satisfied with what they have - they always want something new. Thirdly, an abandoned or occasionally reviving site will not attract serious advertisers.

It is also important to understand which videos to publish. If you initially chose one topic, work on it further. And if you post reviews first, then "conversational" videos, then clips, you will lose ER. Your audience will only watch what they are interested in, that is, a small part of the videos. Or even go to channels that cover one topic.

Internal tools - for a thorough analysis of your YouTube channel

Third-party tools and services may be more convenient, but internal tools cannot be neglected. Only they (absolutely free) will give detailed statistics on the audience, traffic sources, viewing time, etc.

Catalog of YouTube channels on EPICSTARS - with statistics and filters

Briefly about the main

  • Watch time is more important than number of views; in addition to subscribers, you need to look at coverage; it is important to take into account the involvement and characteristics of the audience; It doesn't hurt to take a look at the amount of content and how often it's posted.
  • When analyzing your own YouTube channels, you can not neglect the internal tool - a creative studio (YouTube Analytics). Additionally, you can connect Google Analytics: to collect semantics from the channel search, to study the traffic of individual pages, to calculate the conversion by the subscription form.
  • For an express audit of your video blogs and convenient competitive analysis, extensions are well suited: VidIQ, Clever, TubeBuddy. Most of their features are free.
  • If, in addition to YouTube channels, there is promotion on social networks and instant messengers, it is worth considering multifunctional SMM services: for example, LiveDune, Fanpage Karma or JagaJam. True, they are paid and expensive, in contrast to the platform for working with bloggers. It is easy to find competitors for analysis and advertising partners on it, since there are about 40,000 sites in the database.
  • To select sites for advertising, analyze competitors from the "middle peasants" and "tops" - rating services are well suited: foreign Socialblade, Russian Whatstat. Their ratings and catalogs of YouTube channels are available for free and without registration.
  • If a business is looking for mostly "beginners" and "middlers" on YouTube, is focused on leads and is ready to work only on a safe deal, exchanges will be the best option. As a rule, they provide more statistics than rating and SMM services. The search for bloggers for advertising or competitive analysis is available immediately after registration: no paid entry or long application processing.

It's all about how and where to view channel statistics, video views, subscriptions and unsubscribes on YouTube and why you need to do it. Good luck!

MarketsandMarkets: Video Analytics Market Development Forecasts 2017-2022

Video analytics technologies

Impact of video quality on analytics capabilities

As the resolution of surveillance cameras grows, the possibilities and functionality of video analytics expand. Video analytics companies rely heavily on current models of megapixel video cameras. However, even private companies do not always have sufficient budget for rapid system upgrades. As for state projects, in addition to the allocation of funds, it is necessary to overcome bureaucratic barriers from prescriptions and approvals.

Therefore, some manufacturers develop video analysis software that is not even of very good quality.

"Our algorithms work even with a video stream that has low frequency frames or low resolution, which is traditional for fragments that are most often used in criminal investigations. We provide a complete reporting package including annotation, editing, clarification and storyboarding", says Sarah Doyle, Managing Director of Kinesense.

Using video analytics based on cloud platforms

At the same time, the search for an alarm event is more often carried out in the archive than in real time.

At the same time, from an algorithmic point of view, the analysis of a video archive is simpler than the analysis of a situation in real time. When something has happened, the signs of the event whose record is to be found are already known. For example, it can be a description of eyewitnesses, a sketch of a suspect, or a car number. Therefore, it is not necessary to pre-configure the detectors for unknown alarm situations. It is enough to analyze the video at the time of recording, extract raw data from it, which can be searched for, and save them. These data include biometric characteristics of faces, recognized car numbers and metadata describing the movement of objects in the frame, their coordinates at different points in time, size, color.
The more information is extracted from the video stream during recording, the more search opportunities there will be in the future.

Video Surveillance as a Service enables a new analytics business model: a one-time request to examine video for any event detection. The customer uploads the video archive to cloud server, where the provider's tools search for and analyze events, and generate a report.

Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR)

Automatic license plate recognition or Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) is a video analytics feature that provides convenient traffic management and parking services. For example, ALPR allows you to track the number empty seats in the parking lot, which is more cost effective than using ultrasonic and magnetic sensors.

In addition, automatic number recognition can be used when integrating with payment systems: parking time is fixed by ALPR; write-off Money for parking going in automatic mode from the attached electronic wallet, replenished by the user.

Another feature that improves ease of use and speed of response is the possibility of pre-registration for events: the system analyzes information about the number of the approaching car, and, if it is in the database, immediately opens the barrier.

Video analytics using artificial intelligence

Deep learning mechanisms based on artificial intelligence make it possible to improve the mechanisms of video analysis, moving from the analysis of events that have already occurred to their prevention.

The development of video analysis algorithms has been one of the main trends in video surveillance for many years. And here, considerable progress has been made, especially in highly specialized areas, such as face recognition and license plate recognition. Thanks to the use of neural networks and machine learning, a computer is almost as good as a person in solving these problems, and in certain cases even surpasses it. But in solving non-specific problems, a computer is still far from a person. We have not yet learned how to reliably detect inappropriate or potentially dangerous behavior of a video surveillance system. Of course, neural networks look promising here too, but there is a long way to go before the practical implementation of “a system that assesses the situation like a person”.
Fragment of the article TK: Search in video archives will make video surveillance much more effective.

Face Recognition Analytics

Panasonic introduced new I-Pro SmartHD surveillance cameras with advanced business intelligence features. The Face Recognition Analytic Platform for use with the WV-ASM200 and WV-ASC970/WV-ASM970 software not only allows real-time face recognition, but also keeps statistics of those caught in the camera's field of view based on their gender and age, which also recognized by the system.

In the case of searching for persons in a database, the result can be presented in chronological order, which makes it possible to analyze the movements of people.

As a rule, a video surveillance system that supports face recognition analytics is built on cameras that can adapt to constantly changing environmental conditions: rain, snow, fog, changing lighting conditions - without compromising the quality of face recognition. In addition, the camera software standard includes functions such as automatic tracking and scene change detection: the cameras can detect abnormal situations and analyze suspicious movement without operator control, and immediately alert the control center.

All devices can be remotely controlled via smartphones or tablets using a dedicated Panasonic app.

line chart Multiple Line Chart

On a chart with several lines, you can study the dynamics of video and channel views, as well as find out which regions viewers from which watch your channel more often than others. Up to 25 indicators can be compared at the same time.

By default, the top five positions are selected, represented by lines of different colors. However, you can choose to view any content that interests you.

In addition, the selected items can be compared with the total value. To do this, check the box Final data in the upper right corner.

Note. It is not possible to add other indicators in such a chart.

Combined histogram

An area chart (combined bar chart) shows how the selected data is related to the totals. This makes it easy to compare performance and identify trends.

By default, the bar chart displays the top five metrics. Up to 25 indicators can be compared at the same time.

Pie chart

You can display up to 25 indicators on a pie chart. Hover over a sector to see what it corresponds to.

Note. On this chart, you can not see the temporal dynamics and compare a single indicator with the final data. To do this, use a multi-line chart or a combined bar chart.

bar chart

On the histogram, the data is presented in the form of horizontal bars, the length of which is proportional to the value of the indicator. You can't see time dynamics on this chart. To do this, use a line chart.

Note. In this chart, it is also not possible to compare a single measure with totals.
