Above, to consider working with e-mail, we considered registration on the MAIL.RU and NAROD.RU servers, which provide POP3 and SMTP servers for working with a mailbox in Outlook.

But how can you receive or send a message if Outlook features are not available, and quick access to information is necessary (you are on vacation, your computer is broken, or this moment no corresponding software)? The way out is to access the mail information through the Web-interface using any browser. Roughly speaking, working with mail via Outlook is transferred to working with browser mail and loading special Web pages that provide an interface similar (essentially) to Outlook, i.e. the page also contains hyperlink commands: Create message, View, Send, Delete etc. Thus, the user only needs a computer with Internet access, which can always be found in any of the city's Internet cafes.

Now let's move on to a concrete implementation of such a possibility. Although the mail server MAIL.RU, on which we considered an example of working with e-mail, has such an opportunity, here we will consider working with a specialized mail server - HOTMAIL.

Hotmail is an international Microsoft server that provides services similar to those provided by MAIL.RU, but in addition to this, registration on Hotmail entitles you to use a number of other additional services, which will be discussed below.

Registration on the Hotmail server

Registration on the Hotmail server gives the user the ability to access all information on Microsoft servers. By registering, you receive a Microsoft Passport, which uniquely identifies you on the network on sites such as MSN, Hotmail, PASSPORT, etc. In addition, registering on Hotmail provides the user with several additional services that interact with Microsoft products, such as MS Office (Outlook, in particular) and MSN Messenger. We will not talk more about the benefits of registering with Hotmail, but will immediately move on to describing the necessary actions.

Comment

You can get detailed information on any issue directly on the site. The only remark: although Hotmail is an international service, it does not yet have a Russian-language version of the site.

Example 11.4. Registration on Hotmail

After successful registration, a page will appear with a corresponding notification and congratulations that you are the owner mailbox: Sign in [email protected] After clicking the button Continue at Hotmail This will load a page with information about the agreement between you and Microsoft. Scroll to the bottom of this page and click the button I accept. This will bring up a page asking you to subscribe to the newsletters of the sites below. If you wish to receive news on this email address, next to the name of the newsletter, check the box, otherwise again move to the bottom of the page and click the button continue, after which you will go directly to the Hotmail mail service.

Comment

Sometimes there are cases when a user entered the login of an existing user or incorrect information, Hotmail will politely warn you about this and ask you to correct the error or select a correction option from the list.

General principles of working with Hotmail

So, after registration, you have become a full-fledged user with a huge range of opportunities provided by Microsoft. Let's move on to working with mail through the Hotmail web interface.

Example 11.5. Login to hotmail

(On the Web Site panel)

Address:= www.hotmail.com

Sign-In Name:= george_usarov

Password:= ************ (Fig. 11.13)

Naturally, the interface of this site is different from the Outlook interface, but the principles of working with mail are the same, unfortunately, the scope of this book does not allow us to describe in detail the process of sending, receiving and organizing messages using the Web interface, especially since this is not necessary. The interface is intuitive. We will describe only the process of creating and sending a test message through the Hotmail web interface (Fig. 11.14).

Example 11.6. Creating a message using the Web interface

Then: = george [email protected]

Subject:= test

Body:= test . . .

Now, using Outlook, you can check if the message has arrived at your email address on the MAIL.RU server.

HTTP account - Hotmail

But in addition to the ability to work with Hotmail mail through the Web interface using a Web browser, an Outlook user can create an account similar to MAIL.RU, only not of the POP3 type, but of HTTP. In this section, we will demonstrate the process of creating a new account.

Example 11.7. Create an HTTP account

>Tools > Accounts Email..

Add email account Next

Your name:= George Usarov

Email address mail:= george usa £ [email protected]

Password:= (Fig. 11.15)

After creating an account, a new root will appear in the Outlook folder tree - hotmail, containing subfolders Inbox, Sent Items, Delete Items and Outbox, working with which is similar to working with folders for a POP3 account, discussed in Chapter 9 "E-mail".

Check for new messages for this account.

Example 11.8. Checking for new messages

> Tools > Send/Receive > Hotmail

The user should receive a standard message from Hotmail employees congratulating the new MSN user and offering to use the Hotmail services listed in the message

Hotmail.com one of the first servers free mail on the Internet, so it remains the most famous to this day, of course not without help from Microsoft Network - MSN.com. Support for mailboxes on Hotmail.com has been incorporated into Outlook Express since the first versions, Outlook even developed a special protocol for receiving mail, instead of POP3, the developers came up with their own protocol that works through the standard HTTP port 80, called HTTPMail. It would seem that this was supposed to make life easier for Internet users who have access through a proxy, however, as Microsoft often does, Outlook Expres did not have built-in support for NTLM authentication for ISA proxies of its own design. Although, of course, with special persistence, you can set up mail through "I can't".

How to create your own mailbox on www.hotmail.com? Yes, it is not so easy to find a link for registering mail to hotmail-e on the site, because the navigation there is very confusing. Well at least that registration on @hotmail.com mail is free. To get your mailbox in the MCH you need to register new account in the "passport" system MSN.com
