A look at the column and its functionality

The beats Pill speaker has 4 wide-range speakers, covering the entire sound spectrum from low to high frequencies. They are located under a durable metal mesh that protects them from external influences, falls and other troubles that it may get into at your music party.

Metal beats button- This is a button to turn on bluetooth for wireless connection. It also lights up when the speaker is turned on.

There is a microphone under the button. Why is it needed in the column, you ask. We answer - beats Pill speakers can be used for speakerphone, i.e. speak on them without answering the phone. You can answer a call using the same metal beats key on the front of the speaker. Above the metal button with the Beats logo we see volume control buttons.

Just above is the NFC icon, which tells us that this column You can synchronize with your device (or the device of your friend who came to visit) using a simplified system, without turning on Bluetooth and without looking for the speaker in the list of available devices. To do this, you just need to bring your smartphone to this icon. Of course, for this, the smartphone must also have NFC technology, which must also be turned on.

On the back of the speaker we see audio output and audio input connectors, a device power button, an LED and a micro-USB connector for charging and connecting to a computer.

The LED blinks when it is searching, and lights up when it is already connected to a sound source. The audio output allows you to output sound from the “Pill” to other speakers, for example, larger ones.

Speaker sound

The four young men from the box representing the speakers know their job very well - the speaker produces high-quality, loud, detailed sound. Of course, you shouldn't expect a huge "sound" stationary speakers, but in terms of volume the Pill outperforms many competitors in the same weight category, such as the Jambox. Many experts note that “Pill”, being smaller, plays at the level of Big Jambox, which is more than 2 times larger than “Pill”.

As they say, it is better to hear and see once than to read a hundred times, so we invite you to evaluate the video review:

Result:

Already the first version of the beats Pill column is just fire! Loud, compact, made of pleasant to the touch and durable materials. With many useful functions and connectors. It would seem, what more could you want? Let's see what the beats Electronics engineers added next and move on to the next version.

What's new in the beats Pill 2.0 wireless speaker

The main innovation of the speaker is the ability to use it not only as an audio system, but also as portable accumulator to charge your other devices. The dimensions, equipment and appearance are practically unchanged. To implement the charging feature, a plug has appeared at the bottom of the speaker, hiding the USB connector. You can insert a cable into it (including the one that comes with the speaker) and charge any of your devices. Convenient, isn't it?

Another new feature is the ability to synchronize the work of two “Pills”. To do this, you need to touch one column twice to the other with the place where the NFC icon is drawn. Voila - now one column is the right channel, and the other is the left channel.

Also changed a little rear end, but this small innovation. In this way, you can distinguish the second generation from the first without touching the pill.

And, of course, we cannot leave you without a video review of the Pill 2.0 bluetooth audio system.

Result:

Of course, with the release of Pill 2.0, beats did not turn the universe upside down, but it did add some interesting technologies to its speakers, while maintaining everything positive sides at the same level...

What's new in portable speakers beats Pill+

They didn't skimp on innovations in beats Pill plus. The design, size, characteristics have changed. See for yourself. She was so fed with features that she began to weigh more than 2 times more. Below we will tell you everything.

Equipment:

1. Stereo speaker beats Pill+ Black

2. Convenient case for storing and carrying the speaker

3. Lightning/USB-A charging cable, length 1.5 m

4.Adapter for electrical network with USB connector

5. Instructions

Technical data:

1. Weight: 710g

2. Dimensions: height: 6.36 cm, length: 21 cm, width: 6.92 cm.

3. Wire length: 1.5m

4. Sound: stereo

5. Microphone: yes

6. Volume control: yes

7. Connection: wired (3.5mm stereo jack) or Bluetooth (NFC)

The main feature is in the sound: now a two-channel crossover

Low and high frequencies are now reproduced by different speakers, just like in professional sound systems. Whatever music you listen to - Hip-Hop, Rock, Metal or Boogie-Woogie, rest assured - it will sound great. Beats Pill more earlier versions The same speakers were used, covering the entire sound spectrum. Those who criticized the early “pills” for their lack of bass are satisfied with the abundance of “bass” in Pill+. The engineers worked not only on the appearance, but also on the filling - the sound has become much better.

No more hard case, just a pouch. But this is the only negative point in new version. And, well, yes, of course there is also weight and price. weighty, but this allows it to stand firmly and not “sway” under the pressure of the bass it produces.

The speaker is now even more pleasant to the touch Thanks to the silicone coating and nice buttons, you will like it.

Five-stage column charge indicator will not let you miss charging the speaker.

All that's left is the juiciest bits from the beats Pill 2.0 speaker- namely the ability to charge other devices from the speaker, and connect two identical speakers into a stereo pair. For the latter, it is recommended to download the beats Pill+ application, available in the AppStore and GooglePlay.

A very nice innovation is a much more powerful battery. Now you can actually listen to the speaker for 12 hours! On the contrary, recharging time was reduced to only 3 hours. Now you can hang out more good music, and sleep less.

We invite you to watch an excellent overseas review from a guy who knows how to do reviews.

That's probably all we wanted to tell you about beats Pill speakers. We hope that this article will help you do right choice.

Thanks to Bluetooth modules and NFC connection to mobile devices lightweight, and the built-in microphone allows you to receive incoming calls without taking the phone out of your pocket.

External acoustics for a portable audio player are not a new accessory. It existed and was in demand among owners of mini-cassette players 25 years ago, and the Soviet model “Amfiton P-401S” even had its own docking station with removable speakers and an additional battery pack. Now players have become more accessible, and any cellular telephone, except for the cheapest ones, can not only play music, but also transmit it via Bluetooth. So you won’t surprise anyone with just a mobile speaker. And you can surprise either with an original design, or (which is more difficult) with high-quality sound. Beats Pill seems to have done both.

Characteristics of Beats by Dr. Dre Pill

Design, control, ergonomics

Beats Pill is a portable stereo active speaker system that connects to a sound source via an audio cable or via Bluetooth A2DP. As the shape for the body, the designers chose the shape of a tablet, or rather a capsule, which is reflected in the name (English pill - pill, tablet). So the signature slogan of Beats by dr. Dre - “Just what the doctor ordered” - fits this gadget perfectly. Stylization is taken to its logical conclusion - inside a solid and durable box there is a transparent blister, reminiscent of medicine packaging, with a “pill” inside.

Surprise: the “pill” is there for a reason, but in a protective carrying case, in which the Pill can not only be carried in a bag, but also attached with the included carabiner to the same bag or backpack. You can use it on your belt, but it’s not the best option, because when walking, the heavy (310 g) column will constantly hit you in the leg at best. The box also includes a compact charging block with USB connector, USB-microUSB cable, 3.5-3.5 mm audio cable and user manual.

The Beats Pill body is strong and tight, without any play or removable parts - this is especially critical for a speaker system. The “tablet” weighs 310 grams. The back part is made of soft-touch matte plastic, pleasant to the touch; on the front half there are metal grilles covering two pairs of speakers. At the bottom there is a thick rubber “leg”, thanks to which the Pill does not slip on the table. It would be better to make it wider so that it would not be so easy to tip the column forward or backward, but then, apparently, the resemblance to a tablet would be lost.

The Pill's controls are simple, nothing superfluous - power buttons, volume buttons and the main control button with a logo that glows during operation. Playback can only be paused and resumed. Skipping a track and rewinding within it are not provided, however, unlike the headset, they are not really needed here. Long press on main button puts the tablet's Bluetooth adapter into detection mode, while, in theory, the logo backlight should somehow change, but no - it lights up the same way in all operating modes. But the small LED on the back side, next to the connector, begins to blink (when the connection is established, it is constantly on). The battery charge/discharge indicator is made in the form of a rim around the MicroUSB connector and lights up when charging, and blinks red when the charge level is low. Both flashing indicators, apparently, are specially placed away from the eyes on the back side of the case so that nothing irritates the user, and if he misses the moment to recharge and the “tablet” turns off, it’s okay, after all, it’s not a phone or a computer.

The volume and power buttons are recessed into the body almost flush, as for me - they are a little tight and have too big move without a clear click. Turning on and off, as well as connecting and disconnecting with a sound source via Bluetooth is accompanied by sound signals, but the 16-step volume control has no indication - neither audio nor visual. When you turn on Pill, you never know how loud the music will be. There is also no way to know the current battery charge level until it is above the critical level. The stated 6 hours of playback via A2DP and 7.5 hours with a wired connection were confirmed; the Pill's battery lasted for 5-8 hours, depending on the operating mode.

Sound

The speaker contains four (two per channel) speakers with a diameter of 1” with a declared total power of 12 W. For its size, the Pill sounds surprisingly clear, producing an unexpectedly bassy sound. The volume is quite consistent with the declared volume, for a small room there is even a lot of it, and on the street the “tablet” successfully shouts over the noise of cars.

Of course, it is not recommended to listen to Pill at maximum volume; distortion becomes audible, especially with a rich sound picture. There are no pronounced wheezing or rattling sounds, just the sound becomes unpleasant to the ear. The optimal level is up to 3/4 of the maximum on the “tablet” and in the sound source - yes, when outputting to the speakers, the volume is adjusted both there and there, and when headphones are connected - only in the player. Therefore, before connecting headphones, you should reduce the speaker volume to a minimum, otherwise, if you disconnect the headphones during playback, an unpleasant surprise may occur.

The sound quality in such devices is negatively affected by two factors at once - the small size of the speakers and lossy compression during transmission via Bluetooth. The second is expressed in noticeable undercutting frequency range from below, which is clearly audible when connecting the same headphones to the Pill output and directly to the sound source, as well as the appearance of small but unpleasant distortions in the sounds of analog instruments, natural sounds and vocals (cymbals, sea noise, sibilance), You can hear it well in the speakers too.

As for music genres, Pill works best with electronic, dance and other simple rhythmic music that uses mainly digital instruments and technologies. The vocals are also worked out well, because... falls into the most “convenient” range for such speakers. An acoustic guitar also sounds good (for the same reason). Symphonic music and rock are worse on the tablet - in works with a dense, rich sound picture, the music becomes inaudible, there is a lack of transparency and detail, especially at volumes above average. The sound as a whole is somewhat “bright”, which can be successfully treated with an equalizer, although some may like it that way.

Due to the proximity of the speakers, stereo separation suffers. The volume of sound is present, but the localization is unclear. For example, at the beginning of the famous composition "Thriller" by Michael Jackson, the steps that should move from right to left mark time, unless you bring the speaker directly to your head.

Everything written above applies to the worst (in terms of quality) use case - in conjunction with audio sources using the standard SBC codec (the majority of them so far). With a wired connection, the disadvantages specific to Bluetooth disappear, leaving only those associated with the small size and close proximity of the speakers.

The sound becomes noticeably cleaner and more transparent, the bass increases a little, and at full power of the amplifier the sound, although it suffers, remains acceptable. The brightness of the sound does not go away, but without the distortions characteristic of the SBC codec, it is no longer so annoying. Jazz and rock begin to sound much more pleasant, the vocalists generally seem to be standing next to each other, and the famous Oxygen by Jean-Michel Jarre is simply mesmerizing.

In this use case, Pill easily replaces mid-level computer speakers and allows you to get “sonic orgasms” from your favorite compositions (I’m serious), but still on some compositions like Big Gun (AC/DC) it seems that dynamic range deliberately narrowed to prevent overloading small speakers and, as a result, wheezing and rattling.

However, there is a third, intermediate option. Pill, like many other modern Bluetooth speakers and headphones, also supports aptX codec with more high quality sound transmission. Among smartphones and tablets, it is implemented in modern models from HTC (starting with ONE X/S/V), Motorola (in smartphones of the RAZR line), Samsung (starting from Galaxy S3, Note2 and Tab 7.0 Plus), as well as several models from Sharp and Fujitsu . Nokia has licensed aptX, but has not yet implemented it in its smartphones, o Sony information No. Full list available on the website of CSR, the owner of the technology. Unfortunately, it was not possible to get one of the listed devices for full testing, but even a short listening in a not very suitable environment confirmed the advantages of aptX - subjectively, the sound quality was at the level of a wired connection.

Just in case, let me remind you that when playing via Bluetooth, the audible result consists of many components. This is the quality of the audio file itself (which is affected not only by the bitrate), the audio path and the Bluetooth adapter of both the transmitting and receiving devices. Therefore, a cheap noname “whistle” for a PC is quite capable of ruining the pleasure of expensive acoustics.

Bottom line

Portable acoustics Beats Pill is a stylish and high-quality device with a stable wow effect. Two connection options make the tablet a universal solution for different situations. Paired with a smartphone or tablet, it can sound an outdoor recreation, a gym, a dance group rehearsal, a retail outlet or a small outdoor event. At home and in the office, Pill perfectly copes with the role of computer acoustics, taking up minimal space on the desk. Thanks to the built-in microphone, the tablet is suitable for calls on a mobile phone or via Skype, and if the sound disturbs those around you, you can connect headphones to it without switching the sound output on the computer. Owners of laptops, netbooks and ultrabooks may be interested in Pill as a more powerful and high-quality replacement for the built-in speakers.

6 reasons to buy Beats Pill:

  • spectacular design;
  • compact and easy to carry;
  • autonomy;
  • versatility;
  • the volume and sound quality are higher than you would expect from such a size;
  • aptX support.

2 reasons not to buy Beats Pill:

  • not all genres of music sound good;
  • Maximum sound quality is only achieved with a wired connection or with an aptX-compatible audio source.

I love the sound. Good sound. There are only sketches in my head about the magnificent sound. Maybe it will work out in life, so there will be a review on music, in which Bang & Olufsen acoustics will take part. Well, for now, let’s look at a budget option for camping acoustics (after all, spring-summer is coming, barbecues, baked potatoes, drinks and fun). Please cut below!

I needed acoustics that would produce more or less good sound, compared to netbook speakers and can be used outdoors. I liked the specimen I was reviewing, so I decided to order it.

I didn’t travel long, about 25 days. It was sent without a track. Arrived in a simple plastic postal bag. Inside there was a box, the printing was not the best printing (although the description of the lot indicated that there would be no packaging at all, but simply wrapped in dough). Well, this is definitely a plus, you can even give it as a gift. The retail packaging was wrapped in dough and arrived without any dents or anything. Inside the retail store, the speaker was wrapped in a matte bag, the kind you usually put in for phone batteries. Under the speaker there is a rectangular cardboard pocket with cables: USB-microUSB, 3.5-3.5. And that's all from the kit.

After looking at it for a minute, or even less, I began to turn it on. It turns on by pressing and holding Power buttons 2-3 seconds. When turned on, it makes a sound like the original Beats.

Bluetooth
And he immediately starts chattering in English saying, connect via bluetooth and the LED flashes. It is located very quickly and connects without passwords. Bluetooth is always active even when a flash drive or audio input is connected, but it is not possible to connect to Bluetooth. Those. you need to remove the flash drive or cable from the audio input and then bluetooth will connect.
I connected Redmi and Cowon J3. Both connected without problems, the + and - buttons on the song column switch, the button b on the front part answers an incoming call, the microphone works well during conversations. But there is one catch. There is a difference in volume between devices. We turn up the volume on the speaker to full (from minimum to maximum 15 presses), connect Redmi and also turn it up to full, it screams so much that it hurts your ears, but Cowon J3 follows the same scheme, plays an order of magnitude quieter, it feels 35 percent quieter thirty. I don’t know exactly what’s wrong, but I can assume that it’s a matter of Bluetooth audio profiles, Cowon doesn’t support something there, or the tooth version.

MicroSD
Here we just inserted a flash drive and the music started playing from the first catalogue. There is no option to switch directories. Tracks are scrolled through by pressing + or - once. If a flash drive is inserted, by pressing the button b you switch between Flash mode card or Bluetooth.
The track is remembered when turned off.

Audio input
It was a little dark here. I connect the supplied cable to the netbook, and the other end to the connector marked In, and the response is silence. Therefore it doesn't work. The poking method helped :) I connected it to the Out connector and the sound came from the speaker speakers (I forgot to say there are 2 active and two passive membranes, below there will be pictures of the patient’s disassembly. If I didn’t understand correctly what this is, then please correct me). The Chinese, therefore, got smart with the entrance and exit signs. Well, it works and let it work. But no, I want everything to be humane.

Patient preparation
I wanted to disassemble the column and see what was inside and maybe even make it humanly that In was the input and Out was the output. It is very easy to disassemble; to do this, you need to remove the rubber strip that serves to stabilize the speaker on the surface. The strip is held neither too strongly nor weakly by the double-sided tape. There are screws under it (5-1=4), unscrew them, pry up the mesh, preferably with plastic (but I used a knife to pry it off and the paint didn’t even get scratched) to remove the mesh and the entire block in it from the latches. It was not possible to swap In and Out :(, I thought they were also on the same contacts as, for example, speakers. But I was glad that the battery costs 18650 and you can replace it if something goes wrong with it. Well, or even install a larger one, or maybe You can try two and then the autonomy will increase 4 times. You can listen for a day at almost maximum or 3 days at a volume that is comfortable for an ordinary room. If anyone knows whether it can be done and how to do it with batteries, then answer in the comments. I will be very grateful. The speakers turned out to be 2 active (through the mesh it seems that all 4 are active) and 2 passive membranes. I touched the speakers and membranes with a needle, the feedback was different. On the speaker it’s continuous, but on the membrane it looks like it’s low frequencies.

She satisfied all the needs that were required of her. The price matches the quality one hundred percent. If you want without any jambs, then you need to take the original Beats pill and not worry about it.

Loud, lows, mids, highs - it's all present.
+ Good battery life (lasts 10 hours at approximately 50% volume). For a room, 50% is too much. I could barely stand listening to it at such a loud volume for one day, but the experiment is ALL.
+ Good build and painting.
+ Beautiful.

The In and Out connectors are reversed
- Does not give an audible signal that the battery is about to run out. (maybe the LED behind the tooth starts blinking or the LED USB connector starts to glow, but I didn’t see it)
- There is no notification when fully charged, neither light nor sound. You can only check with equipment that will show how much the speaker has taken into itself and when the charging process stopped.

+\- Talking.
+\- The number six on the front panel is constantly lit.

I recorded the video on my phone, so don't be angry. Below is the video link of the same on Yandex disk and recording sound with a voice recorder using Cowon J3
